REVIEW
Frizzled signalling and cell polarisation in Drosophila and vertebrates
David Strutt Centre for Developmental Genetics, Department of Biomedical Science, University of Sheffield, Western Bank, Sheffield S10 2TN, UK e-mail: d.strutt@sheffield.ac.uk SUMMARY A key aspect of animal development is the appropriate polarisation of different cell types in the right place at the right time. Such polarisation is often precisely coordinated relative to the axes of a tissue or organ, but the mechanisms underlying this coordination are still poorly understood. Nevertheless, genetic analysis of animal development has revealed some of the pathways involved. For example, a non-canonical Frizzled signalling pathway has been found to coordinate cell polarity throughout the insect cuticle, and recent work has implicated

Andrew Strutt has sent me a copy of the entries in the Strutt family bible. The father of the early entries, William Gollop, is believed to have been a Jewish Rabbi who fell in love with a Gentile and converted to Christianity. The bible is thought to have been his. The information was entered in the bible by Emily Blanche Strutt on 12 July 1895. See also the Gollop Family for details. Some of the names and dates do not coincide with the evidence I have, which is probably understandable given the time lapse between the events and the date of entry by a child. I have entered this information as it stands, with a cautionary note where necessary.

http://www.measure.demon.co.uk/docs/Strutt.html
Lord Rayleigh
John William Strutt was the 3rd Baron Rayleigh. The Rayleigh title was originally given to his grandmother, Charlotte, on her husband's suggestion because Joseph Holden Strutt had declined personal honours throughout his life, and perhaps didn't wish to be raised to the peerage as he should have to resign as an MP. The title had been proffered by George III for Joseph's duties in the army and in Parliament. On his wife's death in 1836, the title passed to their only son John James Strutt, 2nd Baron Rayleigh.
John James, a deeply religious man, led the life of a country squire in Essex, north-east of London. He married when he was 46, Clara, who was only 17 at the time. John W Strutt was born on 12th November 1842 into a loving and protective family. He showed early promise in mathematics, and studied under Routh at Cambridge becoming Senior Wrangler (top of the year in the math exam). He also had an abiding interest in photography from his youth.
J W Strutt became a fellow of Trinity College Cambridge in 1866. He travelled widely for that time, including the US and Egypt. On returning from a visit to the United States, where he met President Andrew Johnson, he purchased some laboratory equipment for Terling. The laboratory at Terling was the centre for many of Rayleigh's experiments on sound, and also where he finally tracked down the gas argon, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. He married Evelyn Balfour, the sister of the future Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, in 1871.

Occasionally Strutt and Parker, the International Property Consultants, hold Auctions of what they refer to as ‘Feudal Lordships by Tenure’. There have two in the last eighteen months, the first was on Wednesday 23rd of October 2002 and the second on Wednesday 26th of November 2003, but they were several in previous years. Unfortunately these sales have been infiltrated by various sellers of extremely dodgy titles. For instance, Antony Boada Cartaya of British Feudal Investments I assume therefore that you will not mind me mentioning on the Fake Titles website the fact that Strutt and Parker sold a title in the sale for a lot of money, despite having been warned in advance by an eminent authority in the field that it was completely bogus?” However, once again they had been fooled into accepting for that sale some ‘titles’ that were of dubious provenance, and I will let Robert Smith of the Manorial Society take up the tale. “Lady Chichester rang The Manorial Society out of the blue on Monday the 23rd of September. She had been somewhat surprised to learn that the family's (Feudal) Barony of Barnstaple - Lot 41 - is up for sale next month, apparently, not on their instructions.

Joseph was the youngest son of Jeddediah Strutt, who had two other sons, William and George. Joseph was baptised in Derby on the 19th of September 1765. He married Isabella Archibold Douglas at St. Oswald's, Ashbourne in 1793, Isabella subsequently died in 1801 leaving Joseph with a son and a daughter. Joseph had a firm conviction that in order to gain the respect of the working classes and reform them from "Their brutish behaviour and debasing pleasures" they must be allowed the same opportunities to enjoy pleasures such as exhibitions of art and open spaces, as are enjoyed by the upper classes. To this aim, he opened up his own house and gardens at

The following transcript was extracted from the Derby and Chesterfield Reporter of September 24th 1840 and published in Loudon's book, The Arboretum, a Catalogue of Trees and Shrubs. The memorable day was ushered in by merry peals from the bells of the many churches. In every part of the town, at an early hour, the processes of decoration were begun, to do honour to the donor of one of the most munificent gifts made to the inhabitants of a town. A gift, valuable now, but one that will become more so year after year, as the town increases. Flags and banners were hung out of the windows of many of the tradesmen of the borough; the Royal Hotel was beautifully decorated. At noon business was totally suspended throughout the town, and: -

http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1904/strutt-bio.html
John William Strutt , third Baron Rayleigh, was born on November 12, 1842 at Langford Grove, Maldon, Essex, as the son of John James Strutt, second Baron, and his wife Clara Elizabeth La Touche, eldest daughter of Captain Richard Vicars, R. E. He was one of the very few members of higher nobility who won fame as an outstanding scientist.
Throughout his infancy and youth he was of frail physique; his education was repeatedly interrupted by ill-health, and his prospects of attaining maturity appeared precarious. After a short spell at Eton at the age of 10, mainly spent in the school sanatorium, three years in a private school at Wimbledon, and another short stay at Harrow, he finally spent four years with the Rev. George Townsend Warner (1857) who took pupils at Torquay.
In 1861 he entered Trinity College Cambridge , where he commenced reading mathematics, not at first equal in attainments to the best of his contemporaries, but his exceptional abilities soon enabled him to overtake his competitors. He graduated in the Mathematical Tripos in 1865 as Senior Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman. In 1866 he obtained a fellowship at Trinity which he held until 1871, the year of his marriage.
A severe attack of rheumatic fever in 1872 made him spend the winter in Egypt and Greece. Shortly after his return his father died (1873) and he succeeded to the barony, taking up residence in the family seat, Terling Place, at Witham, Essex. He now found himself compelled to devote part of his time to the management of his estates (7000 acres). The combination of general scientific knowledge and acumen with acquired knowledge of agriculture made his practice in estate management in many respects in advance of his time. Nevertheless, in 1876 he left the entire management of the land to his younger brother.
