Dirk Struik 's father was a teacher. Dirk attended the Hogere Bugerschool in The Hague. This was a special type of school which was designed for children of middle class parents who were aspiring to better their status. Struik developed left wing views while at school, being influenced by one of the teachers. The Hogere Bugerschools allowed entry to the university system after passing additional examinations and this Struik did entering the University of Leiden in 1912. Struik commuted from Rotterdam to Leiden University by train, so he never became fully involved with student life. He described his undergraduate years in [8]:- No one ever told you which lectures to hear if you wanted to pass your exams; the grapevine took care of that, and you just followed the others who were in the same boat. No deans, provosts, marshals, student advisors, psychologists, and other such academic sages. No fortnightly tests either; there were just two exams in four years ... The range of courses studied by Struik included mathematics and physics. In physics he was taught by

Dirk Struik, a highly respected analyst and geometer, and an internationally acclaimed historian of mathematics, was a good friend of the Mathematics Department at Tufts, and of the Tufts alumnus Norbert Wiener Education Dirk Struik was born in Rotterdam on September 30, 1894, the same year as Norbert Wiener However, in November of that year he received a letter from J. A. Schouten in Delft asking if he would like to become his assistant. He did, and in 1922 he earned his doctorate with J. A. Schouten in tensor analysis and differential geometry. He was an assistant at the Technical University in Delft from 1917 to 1924. Career Norbert Wiener . They took to each other from the start and talked a great deal of shop. They drank beer together and took walks on the nearby hills. When Wiener learned that Struik's plans for the future were rather vague he suggested that Struik come to MIT, where Wiener was an assistant professor. Dirk and Ruth Struik both liked the idea, and when he was offered a lectureship at MIT in the fall of 1926 (as well as a tempting job in Moscow), he accepted. Struik became assistant professor there in 1928, associate professor in 1931, and professor in 1940. He retired from MIT in 1960 as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. His work at MIT contributed significantly to building up differential geometry there. Family Soon after finishing his dissertation Struik met Dr. Saly Ruth Ramler, a Czech mathematician (and accomplished modern dancer). She had obtained a doctorate on the axiomatics of affine geometry under G. Pick and G. Kowalewski at the University of Prague in 1918 (making her, Struik remarked, possibly the first woman at that venerable University to receive a doctorate in mathematics). In 1923 they were married in Prague. She schemed to get him out of the Netherlands and from under the watchful eyes of Schouten. She made sure he encountered Levi-Civita and Courant at dinner during a mathematics meeting in Jena, and these men arranged for a Rockefeller Fellowship.

Professor Emeritus Dirk J. Struik of Belmont, MA, a highly respected analyst and geometer, and an internationally acclaimed historian of mathematics, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 21, 2000 at the age of 106. Professor Struik was a member of the MIT mathematics faculty from 1928 until 1960, and remained intellectually active throughout his life. Beginning in 1912, Struik was educated very broadly in mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden, taking courses from Lorentz and de Sitter. After a short interruption (for lack of funds), he was invited by J. A. Schouten to do research on tensor analysis and differential geometry. It was during this time that he met and soon married Saly Ruth Ramler, a Czech mathematician and accomplished modern dancer. Dr. Ramler wrote her doctorate on the axiomatics of affine geometry under G. Pick and G. Kowalewski at the University of Prague in 1918, and as Professor Struik later wrote, "Ruth may well have been the first woman at the more than 500 year-old University to receive a doctorate in mathematics." Struik's long and successful career in differential geometry led to a great many mathematical papers and books, including the 1950 text

Dirk Jan Struik:
Mathematician, Historian, and Marxist
By Arthur B. Powell and Marilyn Frankenstein "Mathematicians grow very old; it is a healthy profession. The reason you live long is that you have pleasant thoughts. Math and physics are very pleasant things to do."
Dirk Jan Struik, Professor Emeritus of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died peacefully on Saturday, 21 October 2000 at his home in Belmont, Massachusetts. He had just turned 106, on September 30. In celebration for what was to be his last birthday, friends from around the world presented him with many multicolor posters containing expressions of admiration and gratitude for the depth and rigor of his academic scholarship and the boldness of his political stances, moving tributes attesting to how he enriched their lives, and words of hope for the worldwide struggle for justice and peace that he championed. Struik's life spanned many eras. He was born in 1894 in Rotterdam, Holland, where he studied from grammar through high school. In a recent interview, he speculated that from his father, who was a schoolteacher, he inherited a love of mathematics and history (Powell and Frankenstein, 1999, p. 421). In 1912, Struik entered Leiden University to study mathematics and physics. In contrast to his high school notions, he attributed his understanding of the spirit of mathematics and science to the theoretical physicist Paul Ehrenfest at Leiden: "All the science I had learned before was static. Ehrenfest showed me how science is a living and growing field" (Powell and Frankenstein, 1999, p. 442).

Professor Emeritus Dirk J. Struik died on October 21 at the age of 106.
Struik was an acclaimed mathematician and part of the mathematics faculty at MIT from 1926 until 1960. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Struik obtained his doctorate in 1922 from the University of Leiden. He continued his research at the Technical University in Delft, and later in Rome and Gottingen with a Rockefeller Fellowship. He worked with many prominent mathematicians of the time, including MIT professor Norbert Weiner. Weiner offered Struik an opportunity to lecture in mathematics at MIT in the fall of 1926. Struik accepted, and became an assistant professor by 1928. He was made an associate professor in 1931, and was promoted to professor in 1940. Struik retired as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics in 1960, but remained intellectually active, continuing to lecture at MIT forums, among other activities. In 1972, Harvard University made him an honorary research associate in the History of Science Department. Since then, Struik went on to earn a Gold Medal of Achievement and the first Kenneth Ownsworth May Prize for his work in the history and development of mathematics. Struik is also honored on an aluminum History of Math ceiling at the University of Connecticut, along with his own professor from Holland. This story was published on Tuesday, October 31, 2000.
