63. Wilson Duff: Survivor, By Marshall Soules

Wilson Duff: Survivor
Marshall Soules
If I know
(as I do know)
that I have received, in this life,
a message
sent long ago during a different life;
a secret message,
sent only once,
known only to the sender: then I know
that the message I have received
must be from my
self. Wilson Duff I first discovered the work of Wilson Duff when I was reviewing books about the West Coast for an Eastern journal called Brick in the late 1970's. I had recently arrived in British Columbia and was fascinated by the landscapemountains, trees, water and cloudsand by the art and culture of the First Nations people. It all seemed so exotic to me: rich with spirit and promise. At the same time, the new Museum of Anthropology at UBC, while providing an impressive record of First Nations' artistic achievement, also told, almost in spite of itself, a disturbing and sad story of cultural betrayal and disintegration. One of the maps I used in my early cultural explorations was a book written by anthropologist Wilson Duff called Images: Stone: B.C. (Thirty Centuries of Northwest Coast Indian Sculpture)

64. Marshall McLuhan And The WWW Is The Medium Still The Message?
The page is dedicated rightly to marshall McLuhan. He journeyed beyond the distant,he journeyed beyond exhaustion, And then carved his story on stone.

Marshall McLuhan and the WWW: Is the Medium Still the Message?
Russell McNeil, Malaspina University-College, March 29, 1999
Introduction
But, we do, as McLuhan does say often in his writing - we do live mythically now - unlike our industrial ancestors - and if I choose that fantasy as part of my myth I hope you forgive me.
Marshall McLuhan - WWW Prophet
When Marshall McLuhan wrote these words in 1963, the World Wide Web lay far in the future.
Mcluhan, Understanding Media - The Extensions of Man, 1963

This is McLuhan's prophesy
. This is our niche on the World Wide Web. A page that has really acquired the characteristics of the externalized nervous system.
The Extended Conscience
The page is dedicated rightly to Marshall McLuhan. The page too has a conscience a moral directive derived from an ancient dictate:
Examine methodically and truly every object which is presented to thee in life. Look always at things so as to see at the same time what kind of universe this is, and what kind of use everything performs in it, and what value everything has with reference to the whole, and what with reference to humans, who are citizens of the highest city, of which all other cities are like families; what each thing is, and of what it is composed, and how long it is the nature of this thing to endure which now makes an impression on me, and what virtue I have need of with respect to it, such as gentleness, humanity, truth, fidelity, simplicity, and contentment. -

Institut für Mathematik, Universität Hannover, Germany Starting with Stone's famous duality between Boolean lattices and totally disconnected compact spaces, we present first a short survey on classical duality theories involving ordered and topological structures (Davey, Hofmann, Johnstone, Lawson, Priestley and others). Then, we provide a general framework for such dualities, using so-called R-invariant subset selections Z for (partially) ordered sets. These selections extend the concept of subset systems proposed by Wright, Wagner and Thatcher in the late seventies and prove quite useful in various fields of order theory, topology, algebra and computer sciences. The guiding idea is that practically all known dualities of the order-topological type involve various notions of primeness on the one hand and certain generalized ideal systems on the other hand. The resulting duality between arbitrary ordered sets and Z -generated complete lattices, having a join-dense subset of

John Marshall Stone
Thirty-first and Thirty-third Governor of Mississippi: 1876-1882; 1890-1896
by David G. Sansing Stone was born in Milan, Tennessee, on April 30, 1830. After teaching school in his native state for several years, he moved to Eastport, a village near Iuka in old Tishomingo County. Before the Civil War, Stone was the station agent for the Mississippi and Ohio Railroad at Iuka and returned to that position after the Civil War. In 1869, Stone, a Democrat, was elected to the Mississippi Senate and served continuously until 1876. When Governor Ames resigned in 1876, Stone was president pro tempore. Because Lieutenant Governor Alexander K. Davis had already been impeached and removed from office, Stone was next in the line of succession and became governor on March 29, 1876.
In 1889, Stone was again elected governor by a vote of 84,929 to l6. During the first year of his second term the state adopted a new constitution. Through a carefully designed set of voting requirements, which included a poll tax and a literacy qualification, the 1890 Constitution perpetuated a one-party system and racial segregation.

(NASA) Mission: Expedition Three, ISS Mission 7A.1, STS-105 Space Shuttle Flight Experiment Location on ISS: n/a Principal Investigator: Dr. Peggy A. Whitson, Johnson Space Center, Houston Project Manager: Michelle Kamman, Johnson Space Center, Houston Overview Human exposure to microgravity the unique low-gravity environment inside the International Space Station and other spacecraft results in a number of physiological changes to the human body. Among these changes are alterations in renal function, fluid redistribution, bone loss and muscle atrophy, all of which contribute to an altered urinary environment and the potential for renal stone formation during and immediately after flight. Previous data have demonstrated that human exposure to microgravity increases the risk of renal (kidney) stone development during and immediately after space flight. In-flight changes previously observed include decreased urine volume and increased urinary excretion of calcium, phosphate, and sodium.

operations, sent a flood of readings that were received and recorded by scientists on the ground. "Even the quick-look made to date reveals that this data harvest is rich in content," said Dr. Nobie Stone, NASA TSS-1R mission scientist at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. "Perhaps the most significant finding," Stone said, "is that tether currents proved to be up to three times greater than existing theoretical models predicted prior to the mission. With the amount of power generated being directly proportional to the current, this bodes well for technological applications. "Reversing the direction of current flow puts the system into an electric-motor mode," Stone explained. This harnessed energy could furnish thrust for reboosting a space station, satellite or Shuttle in a decaying orbit.

On August 12, 1993, the staff of Exeter College, Oxford, were summoned to a meeting by Simon Stone, the college's home bursar. They arrived, mildly curious, expecting to hear Stone announce the name of the college's new rector. Instead the address took an unexpectedly personal turn. Stone, a former naval commander, began by referring to his recent, unconventionally floppy hairstyle. Moving nervously to the point, he said the hair was just an outward sign of a much bigger change that was about to take place in his life. Stone, 46, explained he was 'one of those unfortunate people' born with the brain of a woman in the body of a man. 'It is a cross I have had to bear since I was a child.' Joining the Navy, he went on, was all part of an increasingly futile effort to make the best of life as a man. But after years of heart-searching, he had decided to change the way he looked to match the way he felt inside. 'When I return to work on Monday, September 13, it will be as Ms Susan Marshall.'

The Old Stone Barn Built by William Prindle in 1857, this landmark served as a livery stable for over sixty years. It also saw brief use as a stagecoach stop for the lines connecting Coldwater and Lansing. By 1928 it had become an unsightly gas station. Purchased through the efforts of Mayor Harold C. Construction in Marshall during Janurary dropped off sharply from the month before and was considerably behind a year ago.
Construction in Marshall chilled dramatically in January, with only four building permits issued for projects with a combined value of less than $30,000. According to statistics released by City Code Official Mike Morgan's office, all four permits were for additions and had a combined total worth of $26,422. The single largest project was a $13,000 sign addition for the new Rent-A-Center location at 991 S. Cherokee. The J.C. Penney catalog location in Patricia's Foods also received a permit for a sign addition at 925 W. College. That sign was valued at $2,922. The city also issued Thomas Smith a permit for a $6,000 sunroom addition at 1711 S. Grant. The final permit was issued to Kevin Samson's MACO for a business storage addition valued at $4,500.
