George Gabriel Stokes
Born in Ireland on August 13, 1819, George Stokes was the youngest of six children. His father, a rector, directed his early education before sending him to a school in Dublin. Stokes attended Bristol College in England, followed by Pembroke College at Cambridge University, where he studied mathematics. He graduated in 1841 and was bestowed with many honors, including a fellowship that enabled him to remain at Cambridge. In 1849, Stokes was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics and spent the rest of his life working at the prestigious school. Throughout his career, Stokes emphasized the importance of experimentation and problem solving, rather than focusing solely on pure mathematics. His practical approach served him well and Stokes made important advances in several fields, most notably hydrodynamics and optics. An advocate of the wave theory of light, Stokes was one of the prominent nineteenth century scientists that believed in the concept of an ether permeating space, which he supposed was necessary for light waves to travel. Though the existence of an ether was later disproved, Stokes' efforts in the area helped pioneer the science of geodesy , the study of the Earth and its gravitational field.

George Gabriel Stokes 1819 - 1903:  An Irish Mathematical Physicist
[Author:   Prof Alastair Wood, School of Mathematical Sciences, Dublin City University, Ireland; 1998]
The name of Stokes, a contemporary of Kelvin and Maxwell, has become well known to generations of international scientists, mathematicians and engineers, through its association with various physical laws and mathematical formulae. In standard textbooks of mathematics, physics and engineering we find Stokes Law, Stokes Theorem, Stokes Phenomenon, Stokes conjecture and the Navier-Stokes equations. George Gabriel Stokes has long been associated with the University of Cambridge, where he spent all of his working life, occupying the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics from 1849 until his death in 1903. This prestigious chair was once held by Isaac Newton, and is currently occupied by Stephen Hawking, who has reached a wide audience outside mathematics with his "Brief History of Time"
The first of the Stokes family to be recorded in history was Gabriel Stokes, born in 1682, a mathematical instrument maker residing in Essex Street, Dublin, who became Deputy Surveyor General of Ireland. Among his concerns was the use of "hydrostatic balance" to ensure a piped water supply to Dublin. His great grandson, George Gabriel, returned to this problem in one of his earliest papers

This award-winning globe could help children become A+ geography students. The Explorer Globe II is jam-packed with hundreds of facts, trivia, and useful scholastic information about every aspect of the geographical world. It electronically verbalizes everything from area population, capitol city/country, state/province, large bodies of water, currencies, high points, distance, and more. Other remarkable features make the Explorer an even more useful reference tool. It has a world clock that, once set from your home area, will tell the time in every other part of the world. And any country can be selected to hear a sample its national music (yes, Tahiti does have a national anthem). The globe sits on a sturdy base, which features a dashboard full of interactive functions and an attached soft-tipped stylus. This stylus is the key instrument: use it to touch virtually any point on the surface of the globe to retrieve information. Diane Beall
