Dr. James Stirling Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Barcelona, Spain j.r.stirling@mailcity.com Lecture: “Mathematical modelling of the physiological response to exercise” Dr. James Stirling has obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Loughborough University, UK. His thesis was on the use of tools from nonlinear dynamics to understand the movement of pollution in chaotic and turbulent fluid flows. After having obtained his PhD he was a postdoc at CALTECH (California Institute of Technology, Department of Control and Dynamical Systems) working on chaos in fluids. Following this he was a postdoc at the Institute of Mathematical Modelling, Technical University of Denmark, working on chaos in non-linear optics. This was followed with a postdoc in the Department of Physics, University of Crete and the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, FORTH, where he worked on chaotic breathers in solid state physics. He then was a visiting professor in the Departament de Matemàtica Aplicada I, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, where he worked on non-linear dynamics in exercise physiology and biomechanics. Currently he is a visiting professor at the CRM, Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, where he continues his work on non-linear dynamics in exercise physiology and biomechanics. This research in exercise physiology is done in collaboration with Professor Bengt Saltin at the Center for Muscle Research, in Copenhagen and Maria Zakynthinaki in UPC, Barcelona. The aim of the research is to model the physiological responses to exercise, using tools from dynamical systems and apply the findings to training methodology and testing.

The Schooner "Jane", Stirling Master, Stranded and Plundered The Index to Newfoundland Captains , Maritime History Archives, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, contain the following entry which prove that James Buchan Stirling was a Captain of various vessels in Newfoundland. Master Name of Vessel Number Sterling [sic], Edgar Elizabeth Sterling [sic], James Jane Sterling [sic], William Joseph Stirling, James Suir Stirling, James Suir Stirling, James Buchan Jane The vessel Jane, with Captain Stirling as Master, was involved in an interesting series of events which were published in two newspapers, The Harbour Grace Herald, Oct. 9, 1850 and The Public Ledger, Oct. 10, 1850: The schooner Jane, Stirling master, bound from Labrador to market with fish, out six days put into this bay on Thursday night last reported in leaky condition. In the afternoon (wind S by E) ran into Salmon Cove where she stranded, was boarded by a number of persons who cut away mast and plundered the cargo. Mr. Cruz's project was chosen among proposals submitted by 53 candidates from 22 countries, ranging from senior scholars and practitioners to emerging voices. The James Stirling Memorial Lectures on the City competition was inaugurated in November 2003 to introduce a unique forum for the advancement of critical perspectives on the role of urban design and urban architecture in the development of the urban environment worldwide. Cruz's "Border Postcards" develops new perspectives on urban planning and design in the international border zone that spans the metropolitan areas of San Diego and Tijuana. The jury unanimously agreed that his blend of theory and design, and his particular attention to the informal city were significant contemporary reflections on the way James Stirling approached urban design. Teddy Cruz will present the inaugural James Stirling Memorial Lecture at the CCA in Montréal on 28 October 2004. This first presentation of the lecture will be followed by a colloquium held at the Van Alen Institute in New York City in Winter 2005, and a second presentation of Cruz's lecture in Spring 2005 at the LSE.

Stirling / Mass Market Paperback / Published 1998 Having seen the ideas for this book discussed online for the last couple of years, it was with great anticipation that I finally got to read it. And it was worth the wait. The island of Nantucket, for some unexplained reason, takes a header into the timestream and winds up in 1230 B.C. The residents of the island then have to face the consequences of being completely cut off from the society they were a part of and the resources they depended on. Steve does an admirable job of showing how the residents do just that. His viewpoint characters are of course the primary movers and shakers of the island (Would you really want to read about Joe Smith who spends his days weeding the grain fields?) and the U. S. Coast Guard Eagle which also made the trip. The main characters are fairly well rounded, with interesting lives and thoughts. Happily they are also well drawn so that you do not get confused about exactly who is talking or thinking at any particular time. This is very important since the book skips around to different POVs several times in each chapter. And the chapters can cover many months at a time.
