Bios Article January 29, 2002 - James Stirling the Mathematician 1692-1770 From an article J O'Connor and E F Robertson at the Universtiy of St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland James Stirling's father was Archibald Stirling and his mother, Archibald Stirling's second wife, was Anna Hamilton. James was their third son and he was born on the family estate at Garden, about 20 km west of the Scottish town of Stirling. The family were strong supporters of the Jacobite cause and this was to have a significant influence on James Stirling's life. The Jacobite cause was that of the Stuart king, James II (of Britain James VII of Scotland: Jacobus in Latin), exiled after the Revolution of 1688, and his descendants. Scotland was united to England and Wales in 1707. The Stuarts were Scottish but Roman Catholics and therefore they had only limited support. They did, however, offer an alternative to the British crown with an exiled court in France which had strong support from many such as the Stirling family. When James Stirling was about 17 his father was arrested, imprisoned and accused of high treason because of his Jacobite sympathies. However he was acquitted of the charges. Nothing is known of Stirling's childhood or indeed about his undergraduate years in Scotland. The first definite information that we know is that he travelled to Oxford in the autumn of 1710 in order to matriculate there. Indeed Stirling matriculated at Balliol College Oxford on 18 January 1711 as a Snell Exhibitioner.

About Us Home Leadhills History Directions ... Photographs In 1735 fortune gave up troubling James Stirling, she had found him a hopeless subject, and he was called to the Scots Mining Company's works at Leadhills, a honorable and pleasant office, in his old country and among his old friends, which he occupied for the rest of his days.
In James Stirling's time it had not a road, hardly a track; and as late as the end of last century, Pennant, traveling of course on horseback, had to take a guide part of the way from Leadhills to Douglas. But in this sort of St. Kilda, James Stirling passed the rest of his life. He had had an adventurous career. His greatest adventure hence forth was an occasional visit to the outer world. On one such visit to Edinburgh he writes a characteristic letter to his clerk at Leadhills. He bids to take some of the companies men to his house (the names by the way are mostly English), "and give them a bole of punch," he orders a provision of that most leprous distilment, shrub; and in a postscriptum he adds, "Be sure to have James Reid of the party; and if I hear that one of you goes home sober, I will seek another clerk when I come home." One pities James Reid and his mates, coerced into excess on shrub.
James Stirling died in Edinburgh on 5th December, 1770, aged 78. His principal works was his "Methodus Differentialis Sive Tractatus de Summatione et Interpolatione Serierum Infinitarum," published in 1730, and translated into English by Francis Halliday in 1749. He also wrote numerous papers in the Transactions of the Philosophical Society and elsewhere. One of these, "Of a Machine to Blow Fire by the Fall of Water," written in 1745 when he had been ten years at Leadhills, was no doubt suggested by the water appliances there. There are at Garden numerous letters of his, his correspondence in Latin with the leading mathematicians of the day, and two holograph MS. volumes by him of a treatise on weights and measures, including an essay on the Pyramids which anticipates some modern disquisitions. Unfortunately of private letters of his there are very few, and of letters from Venice none.

STIRLING CASTLE
'a huge brooch clasping highlands and lowlands together'
Alexander Smith 1856
Loction Map
Plan Set on a volcanic rock commanding views for miles around, Stirling Castle was one of the most important strongholds in medieval Scotland.
Before the Marshlands of Flanders, Blairdrummond and and Drip Mosses to the west were drained, Stirling Bridge was the only practical place to cross the River Forth. This gave Stirling Castle strategic importance, the control of movement between north and south, highlands and lowlands.
A royal residence and parliament hall from at least the 12 th century, a favourite of the Stewart kings, a military depot and barracks, and now one Scotland's most popular tourist attractions.

Alexander died here in 1124. The is no archeological evidence of a stronghold on the site prior to that but legend tells of it being a seat of King Arthur, and that a stronghold here was besieged by Kenneth MacAlpin, King of Scots from 842. Archeological evidence and legend apart, I find it difficult to believe a site such as Stirling Castle would have gone un-noticed by Iron Age fort builders, and those opposing the Roman invasion a thousand years before Alexander. Why did the Romans build their northern frontier, the Antonine wall, a few miles south from here? Did they find it difficult to pass Stirling?

Photographs: Tim Imrie-Tate. by Michael Hall Stirling the collector Practical collecting Stirling the collector Few of the major architects who rose to prominence after the war have matched Sir James Stirling's curiosity about history. At a time when designers were wedded to the notion that 20th-century architecture should reject the past, Stirling was happy to cherry-pick inspiration from multiple eras of design history. Such an interest not only influenced his buildings - most notably the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (completed in 1984) - it also stimulated his appetite for constantly expanding and renewing his intensely personal collection of furniture. Initially Stirling was most strongly attracted to the classic designs of the pre-war Modernists, but in the late 1960s he developed a deep loveof early-19th-century neo-Classical designers, notably Thomas Hope and George Bullock. By the time Stirling died in 1992, he had formed an exceptional collection of their work.

The building
In 1988, a new arts centre, based at Pier 8, was proposed to raise the curltural profile of the city and bring more businesses and tourism into the area. Salford City Council commissioned the internationally famous architects James Stirling and Michael Wilford www.michaelwilford.com to produce designs for the arts centre. Stirling died suddenly in 1992, and Michael Wilford was confirmed as architect. Lottery funding was secured, building began in April 1997, and was completed three years later. The total cost of the project, £106 million, includes The Lowry building, the large triangular Plaza, the terraced areas down to the canal and the Lifting Footbridge leading to Trafford Wharfside and the Imperial War Museum - North. Also included in The Lowry project is the Digital World Centre (DWC) - a high-tech business centre providing quality, serviced premises. It will be home to the Digital World Society (DWS), a new think tank that will generate innovative projects in digital technologies. It is due to open in Autumn 2003. The Outside The Lowry is triangular in shape, to fit with its site at the end of Pier 8. In area it is the size of 5 football pitches. The building stands on 803 concrete piles sunk down into the bedrock; it was made from 48,000 tons of concrete, 2,466 tons of steel and 5,263 sq metres of glass.

Introduction
James Stirling
"I ceased to believe in Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of "truth to materials" when I saw for the first time a building by Palladio- where the peeling columns were in fact made of bricks- and not of marble or stone, as I had naively assumed from the books. I believe that the shapes of a building should indicate- perhaps display- the usage the way of life of its occupants, and it is therefore likely to be rich and varied in appearance, and its expression is unlikely to be simple... We are not much concerned with the imagery of space flight or super-advanced technology, as I think an architect usually has to make do with the technology which is normal and is cost-wise available to him. According to what is appropriate for a particular building problem, the building could, I think, be made of any materials- old or new, traditional of technological- and the whole spectrum of the past, from earth works to plastics, is usable according to the differing economic/climate conditions prevailing in different countries."
