It is approached to front right by a staircase and to the left by a ramp dominated by oversized coloured hand-rails. A car park is situated below the main reception area which is itself dominated by a bright green rubber floor, and this reflects in all the surrounding glazed surfaces. Glimpsed through small windows in this area, the central, scalped stone-faced rotunda can be seen. In it classical references abound. On the first floor lie the 15 top-lit and rather traditional rooms that serve as the galleries and contain some splendid examples of German and foreign art." John Hamilton
Archbishop of St. Andrews; b. 1511; d. at Stirling, 1571; a natural son of James, first Earl of Arran. Placed in childhood with the Benedictines of Kilwinning, he acquired, through James V, the abbacy of Paisley, which he held from the age of fourteen till his death. It is doubtful whether he ever actually entered the order. After studying in Glasgow he entered the University of Paris. Then he received holy Orders, and returned to Scotland in 1543. His half-brother James, second Earl of Arran, being then regent during Mary Stuart's minority, Hamilton was speedily promoted to important offices of state, becoming privy seal, and later, high treasurer. Knox's "Historie" gives evidence of the hopes entertained by the reformers of winning him over, but he soon showed himself a strong partisan of Cardinal Beaton and the Catholic party, and was instrumental in overcoming the Protestant sympathy of Arran and reconciling him with the cardinal. In 1544 Hamilton was appointed Bishop of Dunkeld, and after the assassination of Beaton, succeeded that prelate not only as metropolitan, but also as the prominent opponent of nascent Protestantism . By the assembling of ecclesiastical councils in 1549, 1552 and 1559, the archbishop took an important part in the framing of statutes for the much-needed reformation of the clergy and religious instruction of the laity. When the packed parliament of 1560 voted the overthrow of Catholicism and the adoption of the

No. 1 Poultry
James Stirling (Stirling Wilford Associates)
Although the building and site were beset with controversy, No.1 Poultry is now viewed as London's post modern flagship. Stirling's design was finalized in 1988 but when he died unexpectedly in 1992, no construction had begun. Michael Wilford, Stirling's partner, completed this monumental work, adhering to the original design. Not only is it a strange shapesometimes called an arc or ship, but its design is playful, post-modern, and eclectic with cladding in pink and beige stone in stripes, with huge cornices and industrial windows, and with a kind of tower/prow with ship-like railings above the clock. Like other post-modern buildings, it also alludes to others structures, most clearly to the Victorian Mappin and Webb building, formerly located on this site. Punched-out triangles, circles and squares highlight the geometries of the building.
A triangular-shaped building
The building provides not only office space, but houses restaurants and shops. The Underground station is also located below the building.
