Michael Stifel
Born: 1487 in Esslingen, Germany
Died: 19 April 1567 in Jena, Germany
Michael Stifel attended the University of Wittenberg where he was awarded an M.A. He made his life in the Church entering the Augustinian monastery at Esslingen. He was ordained in 1511 while at the monastery. However Stifel did not conform correctly to the Catholic faith and he became unhappy with taking money from the poor. He was forced out of the monastery at Esslingen in 1522. He sought refuge with Lutherans and eventually he went to Wittenberg and lived in Luther's own house for a while. In 1523 Luther obtained a position of pastor for Stifel but anti-Lutheran pressure forced him out of a number of positions. In 1528, Luther set him up in a parish at Lochau (now Annaberg). Stifel made the error of predicting the end of the world and, when it was seen that he was wrong, he was arrested and dismissed from his post. In 1535 he went to a parish in Holzdorf and remained there for 12 years. In the religious Schmalkaldic War of 1547, the Lutheran duke Maurice of Saxony and Holy Roman emperor Charles V tried to take a region of Saxony away from Protestant control. Stifel was forced to flee from his parish again. This time Stifel went to Prussia and obtained a parish near Königsberg. During this time he lectured on mathematics and theology at the University of Königsberg. Arguments with colleagues led to him returning to Saxony three years later. In 1559 Stifel obtained a post at the University of Jena, where he lectured on arithmetic and geometry.

Pfarrer Michael Stifel

summary of article by Paul Queary
Associated Press Writer, 9/20/95
The AP reports that Robert Cochran and Michael Garrett, two former investment bankers with the St. Louis based firm of Stifel, Nicolaus and Co. Inc., were indicted for wire fraud and money laundering, based on allegedly defrauding state and local agencies in a multi-million dollar bond underwriting scam. "The indictment alleged they helped rig bond issues underwritten by Stifel. In return, the investment firms that won the contracts made secret payments to Stifel from which Cochran and Garrett benefited. The indictment seeks the forfeiture of more than $2 million from Cochran." In keeping with the government's double jeopardy practices, the Securities and Exchange Commission also filed a civil lawsuit against Cochran, Garrett and Randall Nelson, another former Stifel executive, seeking the disgorgement of the amount by which they were allegedly unjustly enriched. The civil suit also seeks civil penalties against Cochran and Nelson. "Just last month, Stifel agreed to pay $1.4 million to settle charges it received improper payments from investment brokers. The firm did not admit or deny guilt in making the settlement," AP reported.

fowlds@hanifen.com It's been more than two years since the merger between Stifel and Hanifen, but you still seem to operate with a Hanifen division. Has this been a difficult integration? The integration hasn't been a problem, but we do need to build name recognition of Stifel, Nicolaus rather than create confusion between whether we are Stifel, Nicolaus or Hanifen-Imhoff. The major reason behind keeping Hanifen was that it had higher name recognition in the municipal bond business in Denver and in institutional equity. We've put together a group of very talented people in our research department. We're now making a major push toward making name recognition of Stifel a key part of what we're trying to accomplish. Will the company continue to expand? We've been expanding aggressively for the last year. We've added roughly 25 new professionals in sales, trading and research during the last 14 months. I expect to add another five to 10. As far as research people in particular, we expect to add another four to five senior analysts during the coming 12 months in financial services, health- care, consumer durables, computer services and the technology-telecom area.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Pastor Michael Stifel
discovered logarithms proclaimed the end of the world spent time in protective custody here in 1533 Michael Stifel was both a prolific scholar and a dreamer. His life was filled with mathematical ponderings and calculations which culminated in his determination that the world would end on October 19, 1533 at 8:00 AM. [This date and time was reached through word calculations which were based on equating letters with their successive triangular numbers.] He announced his frightful conclusion on New Year's Eve, 1533, in the small electoral residence of Lochau (later known as Annaburg), where Luther had installed him as pastor. The result was that every citizen began living with this single end in sight and no longer worked, rather left the fields uncultivated. Annaburg became a pilgrimmage site, where everyone tried to prepare himself for Judgement Day. The small town was like an anthill, full of shady characters who also found listening ears and profits here. Stifel himself set the example by giving away all of his books without thinking about the fact that they were of no use to the receivers either. A few even brought their own lives to an end. The day-laborer Balthasar Wiebe and the [Cossaet] Claus Barthel set their own homes on fire, in order to free themselves from all possessions which might block their path to salvation. They wanted to be able to devote their time remaining to penance and to inner reflection. The town historian made off with the money in the town treasury by the cover of darkness.

Stifel And Roberval Michael Stifel was a German mathematician who lived in the late fifteenth century and early to mid-sixteenth century. He was born in 1487, in Esslingen, Germany. The exact date of his birth is unknown. Stifel died on April 19, 1567, in Jena, Germany. His father was Conrad Stifel, a well-respected member of the community. When Michael was young his family did not have much money. Not much is known about Stifel's life until the time he attended the University of Wittenberg, in Germany. After he graduated, Stifel was awarded an M.A. from the university. Then Stifel began his life with the church. He entered the Augustinian monastery and became a catholic priest in 1511. Soon after this, Stifel began questioning the Catholic Church. He did like the idea of taking money from poor people. As a result of this, Stifel was forced to leave the monastery in 1522. Now he decided to go to Wittnenberg and become a Lutheran. During this time, Stifel became friends with Martin Luther himself, and lived in his house for a time. In 1523, Martin Luther made Stifel a pastor, but because of anti-Lutheran feelings Stifel was forced to leave this job. Then in 1528
