Thomas Jan Stieltjes Thomas Stieltjes started his studies at the Polytechnical School of Delft in 1873, but spent his student years reading Gauss and Jacobi in the library rather than attending lectures, resulting in many failed examinations. Instead, Stieltjes became assistant at Leiden Observatory in 1877. Perhaps the most significant mathematical event in Stieltjes' life was his correspondence with Hermite. Originally, the conversations concerned celestial mechanics. However the correspondence turned quickly to mathematics and Stieltjes began to devote all his spare time to mathematical research. In 1883, he married, and his wife strongly encouraged him to stop his observational work to do mathematics. He was asked to substitute at the University of Delft, and he lectured on analytical and descriptive geometry. This confirmed what must have been becoming increasing clear in Stieltjes' mind, that mathematics was the only possible career for him. He resigned his post at the observatory. He applied for a chair in Groningen, but did not receive it because of his lack of qualifications. Hermite arranged for Stieltjes to get an honorary degree at Leiden University, but word did not reach him in time for the cerimony. Stieltjes went with his family to Paris in 1885, and in the same year he was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam. He received his doctorate of science in 1886 for a thesis on asymptotic series. In the same year Stieltjes was appointed to the University of Toulouse, being appointed to a chair in 1889.

As an engineer he is famed for the construction of harbours in Rotterdam and is remembered today through a statue, erected by his friends, which stands on the Noordereiland, at the Burgemeester Hoffman Plein, in Rotterdam. In fact the dictionary of biography of famous people from the Netherlands which I [EFR] consulted before writing this biography contained a two page entry concerning Thomas Stieltjes, the father, while there was only a single paragraph on his son, Thomas Stieltjes the mathematician. Thomas Stieltjes senior had seven children and Thomas Stieltjes junior had two brothers and four sisters. It may have been enjoyable to Stieltjes to read the works of these great mathematicians rather than study the coursework but the consequence was that he failed his examinations. I have accepted this offer and I believe that this position will permit me to become more useful. ... One of these days my nomination will become definite. Stieltjes, Thomas Jan Dutch-born French mathematician who contributed greatly to the theory of series and is often called the founder of analytical theory. His analysis of continued fractions, in particular, has had immense influence in the development of mathematics. Stieltjes was born in Zwolle and studied at the polytechnic in Delft. He worked at the Leiden Observatory 1877-83. In 1884 he became professor of mathematics at Groningen. From 1886 he taught at the University of Toulouse, France. Stieltjes studied almost all the problems in analysis then known - the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, Euler's gamma functions, elliptic functions, interpolation theory, and asymptotic series. His researches also raised the mathematical status of discontinuous functions and divergent series. His memoir 'Recherches sur les fractions continues', completed just before he died and published in two parts (1894 and 1895), was a milestone in mathematical history. Stieltjes was the first mathematician to give a general treatment of continued fractions as part of complex analytical function theory.
