De beste technisch-wetenschappelijke onderzoekers die bij de STW onderzoeksaanvragen indienen komen voor deze grootste Nederlandse prijs in de technologie in aanmerking. Zij ontvangen bedrag van een half miljoen euro, vrij te besteden aan onderzoek naar keuze en een bronzen sculptuur van kunstenaar Rob Raaijmakers. La sua opera scientifica, estesissima, abbraccia i campi della statica, dell'idrostatica, della meccanica, della prospettiva, dell'aritmetica; compilò tavole per il calcolo degli interessi, scrisse di astronomia e di teoria musicale. Ricoprì incarichi per la costruzione di fortificazioni e per la progettazione di campi militari. Della vita di Stevin (o Stevinus) si sa ben poco e le sue opere sono le fonti più importanti per comprendere il suo carattere e la sua personalità. Figlio illegittimo di Cathalijne van de Poort, Stevin imparò diverse lingue, lavorò nell'amministrazione finanziaria della città di Anversa e Bruges, visitò la Germania, la Polonia e la Norvegia. Stevin studiò all'università di Leiden, mentre nel frattempo pubblicava, l'uno dopo l'altro, importanti lavori. Nel 1604 divenne precettore del governatore Maurizio d'Orange, che si interessava vivamente alla matematica e alle scienze esatte.
