STEVIN, Simon Leiden, Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir, 1634 Folio (350 x 228 mm), pp [viii] 222; [ii] 678 [without the inserted leaf of instructions to the binder found in a few copies], title printed in red and black, woodcut printer's device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams in text, one engraved diagram on p 170 in second part; some gatherings slightly browned as usual, otherwise a large, clean copy in contemporary Dutch vellum, cartouches in blind on sides, upper joint split at top. £4750
First edition of the complete scientific works, edited by the Lorrain mathematician Albert Girard (1595-1632). This edition incorporates the Mémoires mathematiques (1605-8) along with Stevin's translation of Diophantus and his treatise on fortification, which were not contained in the earlier collection. The volume is divided into six parts, of which parts II-V are reprinted from the Mémoires but with the addition here of Girard's commentaries.
Part one comprises Stevin's translation of Diophantus, the first appearance of the text in a modern language. Stevin translated the first four books, and Girard books five and six. this is followed by Stevin's arithmetical texts, including the French version of his De thiende (1585), the introduction of decimal fractions (see Printing and the mind of man n. 99).
The second part, La cosmographie, contains a translation into French of Stevin's astronomical treatise De Hemmelloop (1580), the most significant pre-Galilean astronomical text to advocate Copernican heliocentricity, and the treatise on navigation De havenvindingh (1599), in which Stevin presents a method of determining longitude using magnetic variation.

Lecture 11 Simon Stevin's Introduction of decimals.
Background
The period 13501600 is known as the Renaissance. There was a rebirth in Europe of a spirit of enquiry and reason in both Science and the Arts music, painting and literature. It was an age of exploration and the growth of nationalism. In mathematics, it marks the first time European mathematicians had ambitions and confidence to go beyond the Greeks. At the same time, close study of Greek texts from Byzantium and the Arabs began. With the growth of international trade and warfare, there was a need for many to understand arithmetic and geometry. New methods for Algebra were invented in Italy, (Pacioli, 1500, Del Ferro, 1520, Tartaglia, 1530, Cardano 1540 and Bombelli, 1550). These included solutions by radicals of cubic and quartic polynomials. In France (Chuquet, 1480, manipulation of exponents), Germany (Rudolff, Stifel 1520, cos algebra) and England (Recorde, 1540). Simon Stevin (15481620) was born in Flanders (Belgium) but spent his adult life in the service of the Republic of the Netherlands. He was a military engineer and tutor in mathematics and adviser in finance and navigation to the rulers William of Orange and Maurice of Nassau. He organized the school of engineering at the University of Leiden and wrote textbooks. His most important work was "De Thiende", translated as " Art of Tenths". A.D. Fokker: Simon Stevin's views on music
The following is the introduction to Vande spiegheling der singconst ("On the theory of the art of singing") in Principal Works of Simon Stevin vol. 5, A.D. Click here for the annotated English translation INTRODUCTION Simon Stevin for some time seems to have contemplated writing a treatise on music. If ever he accomplished this design, the work must obviously have been lost. Only some fragments were discovered in 1884 by D. Bierens de Haan in a collection of miscellaneous manuscripts, which belonged to Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), the well-known secretary to the Princes of Orange, who, at the same time, was a gifted poet and musician. (Cf. this edition, Vol. I, p. 33, work XV). This collection, now in the possession of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen at Amsterdam, is preserved at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague, The Netherlands. Stevin often divided his books into a main part, containing the established doctrine, and an appendix dealing with controversial matters, in order "not to obscure the instruction by dispute", as he says. Accordingly we find two main parts, or sketches thereof, and two appendices. Neither of these treatises is complete, and in the plan they show an appreciable difference in the stress laid on certain points. One draft is in Stevin's own handwriting. It dwells rather more upon discussions than the other. This part will be reproduced hereafter. The other draft, which has been copied as if in preparation for print, indulges rather more in elementary definitions. It shows some gaps, presumably to be filled up later.

Simon Stevin foundation De Simon Stevin foundation has the objective to promote the study, the conservation c.q. the restoration of fortifications (old, out of military use), as memorials of history and as monument of nature (art.1 of the statutes) Our association was founded in 1964 by the Vlaamse Toeristenbond (Flemish Tourist Union) - Vlaamse Automobilistenbond (Flemish Driver Union) and called to Simon Stevin (Brugge 1548-1620), the founder of fortification in the Netherlands. Our association is interested in the fortifications in Flanders, Belgium and Europe. This history begins in the prehistory and ends at the Cold War. From several archives we got documentation about national defence: about bastionated city walls to the ring of polygonale forts around the National Reduit Antwerp ; about earth walls and bunkers. The study results in publications and in our magazine Vesting which appears every 3-month. In Europe we have 380 members. We are member of the International Fortress Council Links to fortification More information Hugo.Magielse@Antwerpen.be

Simon Stevin Exchange Program
an international exchange program in the history of science
In 1993 eight departments for the history of science in the Netherlands, England and Northern America have established an international exchange program for Ph.D. students and staff. The basic idea of the program is to share one another's expertise and facilities, to the benefit of both students and staff. Ph.D. students taking part in the program will stay for one term at another department that complements training received at their home university. They will follow two or three courses; give a seminar paper; have informal discussions with students and staff; in some cases increase their command of a foreign language; and profit from the enriching experience of expert knowledge and a different culture. Members of staff will visit other departments to give informal and formal presentations, as well as to do research and teaching for a longer period. The program has no regular funding. Grants for specific exchanges have been provided by the Wellcome Foundation, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, and the Huizinga School for Cultural History.

Vereniging Simon Stevin Het begon allemaal in 1961, in Oudenbosch (Noord-Brabant). Zij zetten hun activiteiten verder voort. Wie was Simon Stevin?

Simon Stevin, Flemish tutor of a Dutch Prince
Portrait of Stevin (Library of the University of Leiden (The Netherlands)) To a general educated public Simon Stevin is mainly associated with the introduction of the decimal fractions, which laid later on to the foundation of the decimal system of weights and measures. He realised a lot of technical inventions out of which the construction of a 28-passenger sailing carriage used along the seashore was best known to his contemporaries. For those less familiar with Stevin we recall that he is born in Brugge (now Belgium ) in 1548 as the illegitimate child of Anthuenis (Anton) Stevin and Catelyne (Catherine) van der Poort . Recent studies proves that his father could be a cadet son of a burgomaster (mayor) of Veurne ; his mother was the daughter of a burgher family of Ieper Ypres ), who married later on a merchant in carpet-weaving and silk-trade, who belonged to a family with sympathy for the Calvinism religion. Practically nothing more is known of Stevin's youth and education. He was at first employed in
