His mother was Cathelijne (or Catelyne) van der Poort who was the daughter of a burgher family of Ypres. Anthuenis and Cathelijne were not married but Simon's mother Cathelijne later married a man who was involved in selling carpets and in the silk trade. By marriage Cathelijne joined a family who were Calvinists. Nothing is known of Simon's early years or of his education although one assumes he was brought up in the Calvinist tradition. Stevin became a bookkeeper and cashier with a firm in Antwerp. It is known that he spent some time between the years 1571 to 1577 travelling in Poland, Prussia and Norway. Then in 1577 he took a job as a clerk in the tax office at Brugge. After this he moved to Leiden in 1581 where he first attended the Latin school, then he entered the University of Leiden in 1583 (at the age of 35). Various theories have been put forward as to why he moved to Leiden. To understand these we need to look briefly at the history of the period. The Union of Utrecht on 23 January 1579 was designed to form a block (known as the States-General) within the larger union of the Low Countries which would resist Spanish rule. It produced a union in the north Netherlands, still officially under the rule of the King of Spain, but distinct from the south. The strong reaction against the Spanish followed the start of a reign of terror by the Spanish occupation in the south beginning around 1567. The north was predominantly Calvinist and effectively ruled by William, Prince of Orange. In 1581 the States-General declared independence from Spain and a complex situation followed as foreign help was enlisted.

Stevin was ingenious in his use of notation and symbols and advanced mathematics by providing a more understandable symbology. He understood the physical and mathematical conceptions of acceleration due to gravity, and in his book, De Beg h inselen der Weeg h const Principles of the Art of Weighing ), he advanced the work of Archimedes on buoyancy, levers, and inclined planes. He was a prolific writer and problem solver and was known as the Dutch Archimedes. His contributions spanned arithmetic, algebra, geometry, astronomy, optics, and physics. Simon Stevin Brugghelinck, naar wie de vereniging is vernoemd, is namelijk de uitvinder van deze voertuigen. Om de traditie van Simon Stevin in ere te houden, beschikt de vereniging al 30 jaar over een eigen zeilwagenvloot, die wordt onderhouden in een eigen werf . Deze bestaat nu uit zes wagens, een zevende wagen wordt gebouwd. Hier vindt u een overzicht van de zeilwagens die in ons bezit zijn. Wanneer kan men strandzeilen? Voor het strandzeilen moet het ongeveer tussen 12.00 tot 14.00 uur eb zijn. Zo kan namelijk een gunstig getij gecombineerd worden met een redelijke kans op wind en een haalbaar tijdstip op de dag. We gebruiken een getijdentabel om uit te zoeken wanneer het eb is. Het belangrijkste voor het strandzeilen is natuurlijk een goede wind, onze zware wagens hebben windkracht 4-5 nodig om lekker te zeilen. Daarvoor is in Nederland de KNMI met de weersvoorspellingen van groot belang. Als we weer in de Panne gaan zeilen is het Belgische KMI natuurlijk beter van dienst. Zeilwagenlinks Landelijke Zeilwagen Federatie (Belgie) We gaan vaak bij LAZEF vaak strandzeilen. Biographie Du grand ingénieur et mathématicien Simon Stevin, l'histoire a retenu avant tout l'œuvre scientifique, marquante par sa diversité et sa vocation à constituer des manuels pratiques. Sa vie, en revanche, nous est peu connue, lui-même en parle peu et il ne subsiste guère de traces directes ou indirectes permettant de mieux connaître ce que furent ses sentiments et ses pensées. Né à Bruges (origine que ne manque jamais de rappeler la mention toujours portée sur la page de titre de ses livres: "Simon Stevin van Brugge"), il commença sa carrière dans une maison de commerce à Anvers, et publia, dans cette ville alors à l'apogée de sa prospérité, ses deux premières œuvres: les Tafelen van interest (Tables d'intérêt) en 1582, et les Problematum geometricorum (Problèmes de géométrie) en 1583. Puis il vint s'établir en Hollande, où on le retrouve inscrit à l'Université de Leyde en 1583 pour y suivre un enseignement de mathématiques. C'est au cours de ces études que Stevin rencontra le prince Maurice de Nassau, rencontre décisive puisqu'il entra au service du Prince comme quartier-maître de l'armée des Etats généraux et y resta jusqu'à sa mort, soit près de trente ans. Simon Stevin (1548 - 1620) Born illegitimate, Stevin was raised in poverty and began his career as a bookkeeper before becoming a tax clerk around Bruges. In 1581 he moved to Leyden and eventually went to University in 1583, aged thirty-five, where he stayed for seven years. He earned a living from his inventions, which focused on the many canals and waterways around him. His machines included mechanical devices for dredging, a mill to pump water and a device to pull ships over obstacles. He developed and promoted the use of sluices, appreciating their military value in flooding approaching enemies, and researched hydrostatics to assess the stability of floating platforms used in military assaults. His work - the first in this field since Archimedes - showed that the pressure exerted by a liquid upon a given surface depended on the height of the liquid and the area of the surface. Fusing theoretical knowledge with practical skill, Stevin published extensively on mathematics, military and civil engineering and mechanics. He published the first theoretical treatise on mills, and patented improvements to their gearing and scoop wheels. He developed a triangulation instrument, the triquetium, and made important contributions to geography, navigation and trigonometry. In La Theinde (published 1585), he introduced decimal fractions to mathematics, writing 8.937 as 80913273. The first figure was the integer or unit of commencement (represented by the 0), and subsequent ones the prime, second and third represented by the 1, 2 and 3.
