Discoveries and inventions
His claims to fame are varied. His contemporaries were most struck by his invention of a carriage with sails, a little model of which was preserved at Scheveningen till . The carriage itself had been lost long before; but we know that about the year Stevin, with Prince Maurice of Orange and twenty-six others, made use of it on the seashore between Scheveningen and Petten, that it was propelled solely by the force of the wind, and that it acquired a speed which exceeded that of horses.

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Simon Stevin 's father was Anthuenis (Anton) Stevin who, it is believed, was a cadet son of a mayor of Veurne. His mother was Cathelijne (or Catelyne) van der Poort who was the daughter of a burgher family of Ypres. Anthuenis and Cathelijne were not married but Simon's mother Cathelijne later married a man who was involved in selling carpets and in the silk trade. By marriage Cathelijne joined a family who were Calvinists. Nothing is known of Simon's early years or of his education although one assumes he was brought up in the Calvinist tradition. Stevin became a bookkeeper and cashier with a firm in Antwerp. It is known that he spent some time between the years 1571 to 1577 travelling in Poland, Prussia and Norway. Then in 1577 he took a job as a clerk in the tax office at Brugge. After this he moved to Leiden in 1581 where he first attended the Latin school, then he entered the University of Leiden in 1583 (at the age of 35). Various theories have been put forward as to why he moved to Leiden. To understand these we need to look briefly at the history of the period. The Union of Utrecht on 23 January 1579 was designed to form a block (known as the States-General) within the larger union of the Low Countries which would resist Spanish rule. It produced a union in the north Netherlands, still officially under the rule of the King of Spain, but distinct from the south. The strong reaction against the Spanish followed the start of a reign of terror by the Spanish occupation in the south beginning around 1567. The north was predominantly Calvinist and effectively ruled by William, Prince of Orange. In 1581 the States-General declared independence from Spain and a complex situation followed as foreign help was enlisted.

Simon Stevin Annelies Van Assche Natalie Van Eynde Ineke van Gremberghe Mieke Van Remoortere The story of Simon Stevin. Once upon a time there was little boy called Simon Stevin... 1. His life. First he was a bookkeeper in Antwerp where he practised the double-entry bookkeeping fashioned after the method introduced by Pacioli in Italy almost a century earlier. Later he was a clerk in the tax office in Bruges. He travelled to Germany, Scandinavia, Poland, Norway. Finally in 1580 he arrived in Leiden. While quartermaster in the Dutch army, Stevin invented a way of flooding the lowlands in the path of an invading army by opening selected sluices in dikes. He was an outstanding engineer who built windmills, locks and ports. He advised the Prince Maurice of Nassau on building fortifications for the war against Spain. To remind their victory against Spain, the prince founded a university at Leiden. In 1583 Simon Stevin went to that university where he studied science and maths. At the same time Prince Maurice of Nassau was studying there. He noticed that Stevin was a very intelligent man. Stevin wrote a text-book, called "Wisconstige gedachtenissen"(mathematical memories), on all the mathematical and scientific subjects in which the prince was interested. Although Stevin was a great admirer of the theoretical treatises of Archimedes, there runs through the 11 books of this Flemish engineer a strain practicality that is more characteristic of the Renaissance period than the classical antiquity. In each of his books his iventiveness was evident, for each of his texts contained some innovation or improvement introduced by him.

Simon Stevin, De Beghinselen der Weeghconst
De Beghinselen der Weeghconst is Stevin's chief work in mechanics. Published in 1586, some fifty years before Galileo's discoveries, it is devoted chiefly to statics. From the evidence that it provides, Stevin would seem to be the first Renaissance author to develop and continue the work of Archimedes. The book contains discussions of the theory of the lever, the theorems of the inclined plane, and the determination of the center of gravity; but most particularly it includes what is perhaps the most famous of Stevin's discoveries, the law of the inclined plane, which he demonstrated with the clootcrans , or wreath of sheres.

Simon Stevin
Simon Stevin (1548-1620), the Flemish mathematician and engineer, was born in Bruges and initiated the science of hydrostatics by demonstrating that the pressure exerted by a liquid upon a given surface depends on the height of the liquid and the area of the surface. While quartermaster in the army, Stevin invented a way of flooding the lowlands in the path of invading forces by opening selected sluices in dikes. The author of 11 books, he contributed significantly to the sciences of trigonometry, geography, fortification, and navigation and devised and urged the universal use of decimal fractions and decimal systems of coins, weights, and measures.

Simon Stevin
Simon Stevin He was not only theoretically envolved with the scientific problems of his time, but also practically. He was the mathematics and mechanics teacher of Prince Maurits and he was an expert in the art of fortification (those who know our local history can learn from this why Prince Maurits could be so successful in fighting the Spanish armies), he developed the teaching program of a new school for enginieers in Leiden, he worked on an improved concept for mills, he wrote about the art of navigation, etc.. For short: he knew about everything which made our nation great in that time (and attractive for tourists now).
He argued that to make science useful it was not only necessary that all publications were written in the native language (therefore, he invented Dutch words for all scientific and mathematical terms known to him - most of which are still in use), but that it should also be simplified as much as possible. For instance, he was an ardent advocate of the use of decimal fractions and of the decimal system for coins, measures and weights.
One of his most famous reasonings, of which he was quite proud himself, was the proof that in an equilibrium situation on an inclined plane the weights of the bodies involved are proportional with the lengths of the planes. Nowadays we prove that using the sines of the angles that the planes make with the horizontal plane, and we decompose the weights of the bodies in forces parallel and perpendicular to the inclined planes. Stevin used an ingenious geometrical argument. He considered the following picture:

dedicated to
Simon Stevin (1548-1620)
In 1998 we celebrate Simon Stevin's 450-th birthday. In the low countries he is not only remarkable for his contributions to mathematics, physics and many other fields of knowledge, but also for his influence on the Dutch language. Like his contemporary Galilei he preferred to publish his findings in his native language and he coined new Dutch terms when necessary, many of which are still in use today.
Those who see the WWW as the means par excellence for the dissemination of knowledge will find it appropriate that a home page be dedicated to this remarkable figure who did so much to spread knowledge using the means that were modern in his own time.
We hope to extend and improve this home page in the course of the memorial year 1998.
One aspect of the Dutch version of this home page might escape those who are not familiar with that language: In what we hope is a playfull appreciation of Stevin's significance for the Dutch language, we will avoid the use of foreign words in the Dutch version of this home page. This makes the enterprise of building this home page similar to Stevin's work in one respect: whereas he had to coin new words for notions that were commonly expressed in Latin, we will have to coin new words for concepts that are normally referred to by English words.
Life and work of Stevin
Here you will find a short biographical note, a transcription of the titelpages of his works and a discussion of his significance for the Dutch language. (In Dutch)
