Ernst Steinitz entered the University of Breslau in 1890. He went to Berlin to study mathematics there in 1891 and, after spending two years in Berlin, he returned to Breslau in 1893. In the following year Steinitz submitted his doctoral thesis to Breslau and, the following year, he was appointed Privatdozent at the Technische Hochschule Berlin - Charlottenburg. The offer of a professorship at the Technical College of Breslau saw him return to Breslau in 1910. Ten years later he moved to Kiel where he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Kiel. Steinitz was a friend of Toeplitz . The direction of his mathematics was also much influenced by Heinrich Weber and by Hensel 's results on p-adic numbers in 1899. In [2] interesting results by Steinitz are discussed. These results were given by Steinitz in 1900, when he was a Privatdozent at the Technische Hochschule Berlin - Charlottenburg, at the annual meeting of the Deutsche Mathematiker - Vereinigung in Aachen. In his talk Steinitz introduced an algebra over the ring of integers whose base elements are isomorphism classes of finite abelian groups . Today this is known as the Hall algebra. Steinitz made a number of conjectures which were later proved by

Ernst Steinitz(18711928) was born on June 13, 1871, in Laurahütte, Silesia, Germany. In 1890, he started his studies in mathematics at the University of Breslau (now Worclaw, Poland). Ernst Steinitz In 1910, he published in which he gave an abstract definition of a "field." He also introduced the notion of a prime field, separable element, perfect field, and degree of transcendence of an extension. With the help of the axiom of choice, he proved that for any field K there exists a field extension F/K such that every polynomial over K splits into linear factors over F and the smallest such field is unique up to isomorphism. He called such field algebraically closed. His work on field theory was influenced by Weber and Kronecker Steinitz also worked on the theory of polyhedra. return

THE STEINITZ PAPERS, subtitled Letters and Documents of the First World Chess Champion, is more than just letters written by Steinitz during different times of his life, including the tragic death of his daughter and during his stay in a mental institution in Moscow. These alone would make the book fascinating reading, but equally interesting are the letters to Steinitz where such well-known figures as Henry Nelson Pillsbury and Walter Penn Shipley and Emanuel Lasker are represented.
THE STEINITZ PAPERS is primarily a book to be read, but there is chess in it. All the games of the Schiffers-Steinitz match are presented with annotations by Steinitz and Andy Soltis.

INDEX
Introduction
For me the area of classical chess starts in 19th century. The great highlight in this century was the 1851 London international tournament. As far as I know, this was the first international tournament in the history of chess. A good ending point of the classical area is 1945, for two reasons: 1. it was the end of world war II and 2. the death of the worldchampion Alekhine in 1946 (I don't think that he played too many games in 1946). The last important tournament in this period was the 1938 AVRO tournament.
