Zanimala nas bo predvsem lepota njegove geometrijske rešitve.
1.UVOD Geometrijska definicija parabole
Izberemo poljubno toèko H na vodnici in jo povežemo z gorišèem F . Narišemo vzporednico z osjo parabole v toèki H in simetralo daljice HF . Njuno preseèišèe oznaèimo z A AHF je enakokraki trikotnik z osnovnico HF , zato toèka A leži na paraboli.

HUGO STEINHAUS CENTER Wersja polska Mathematics, pure and applied, is often perceived by the community of users as increasingly isolated from its sister sciences and from the needs of industry. The goal of the Hugo Steinhaus Center is to organize, encourage and support research on and education in stochastic techniques as applied in science and technology. A study of related theoretical mathematical issues is an integral part of the Center's research. Random and chaotic phenomena provide the unifying intelectual theme of the Center, and represent an area where certain frontiers of mathematics, economics, natural sciences, and engineering can fully overlap on problems that are fundamental and yet have practical implications in finance and technology. A feature of the Center is a synthesis of viewpoints of mathematicians, economists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists and engineers, working in the Center on equal footing. About the Center

Steinhaus studied Lebesgue 's two major books (1904) and (1906) around 1912 after completing his doctorate. During one such walk I overheard the words " Lebesgue measure". I approached the park bench and introduced myself to the two young apprentices of mathematics. They told me they had another companion by the name of Witold Wilkosz, whom they extravagantly praise. The youngsters were Stefan Banach and Otto Nikodym. From then on we would meet on a regular basis, and ... we decided to establish a mathematical society. The mathematical society which Steinhaus proposed was started as the and, shortly after the war ended, it became the

    (last updated 3/10/2003)
The following problem was published by the Polish mathematician Hugo Steinhaus Begin with a list of n plus and minus signs drawn at the top line. Continue by adding lines with n-1, n-2, ..., 1 signs such that below a pair of equal signs a plus sign is drawn and below a pair of unequal signs a minus sign is drawn. Here's an example for n=7: Now the poblem is to decide for which n's triangles exist with an equal number of plus and minus signs . In the example above there are exactly 14 plus and minus signs which shows that this is possible for n = 7. In the following we call the figures Steinhaus triangles of order n . If the triangle has a equal number of plus and minus signs we call it balanced . Because a Steinhaus triangle of order n is consisting of n(n+1)/2 signs balanced triangles are only possible if n is congruent or 3 modulo 4
The Minimal, Maximal and Average Number of Plus and Minus Signs

    life ...
Hugo Steinhaus was born at Jasˆlo on January 14, 1887. On graduation from classical secondary school in 1905, he entered Lwow University where he studied philosophy and mathematics. A year later, he moved to Gottingen and attended lectures by Hilbert, Klein, Minkowski, Runge, Landau, Caratheodory, Toeplitz and others. In 1920, he was nominated Associate Professor at the Lwow University and in 1923 - Professor. He became a member of the Lwow Scientific Society in 1926, and in 1929 he founded, together with Stefan Banach, the periodical "Studia Mathematica", devoted mainly to functional analysis. From the very beginning (1931) of the series "Monografie Matematyczne", Steinhaus has been a member of the editorial committee. In 1945 at Cracow, he contributed to the organization of the Wrocˆlaw University, where he was appointed to a department, later called the Department of Application of Mathematics. In November of that year he settled in Wrocˆlaw and was the organizer and first dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (at that a de facto common faculty of the University and the Technical University). Steinhaus was the first chairman of the Wrocˆlaw Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society, one of the founders and the first secretary-general of the Wrocˆlaw Scientific Society.

(Stanislaw Marcin), 1909-1985 Sketches Ms. Coll. 54 36 linear feet American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 A gifted mathematician, Polish-born Stanislaw Ulam made contributions to set theory, topology, mathematical logic, and number theory, but is most widely remembered for his work in fostering the technical development of thermonuclear weapons. He was associated with Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories for most of the years between 1943 and 1965, and thereafter with the University of Colorado. These papers include personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, and memorabilia. Stanislaw Ulam Stanislaw Ulam was gifted mathematician who, during the course of his career, made significant contributions to set theory, topology, ergodic theory, probability, cellular automata theory, the study of nonlinear processes, the function of real variables, mathematical logic, and number theory. Perhaps his greatest achievement was the development of the Monte Carlo method for solving complex mathematical problems by electronic random sampling, but he made equally noteworthy contributions in hydrodynamics (three-dimensional fluid flow), the development of nuclear propulsion for space flight (Project Orion), and in fields as disparate as physics, biology, and astronomy. Yet despite the breadth of his scholarship, Ulam is most often remembered for the central role he played in the early development of the American hydrogen bomb.
