Steiner's Theorem by June Jones Steiner's Theorem, named for Jakob Steiner (1796 - 1863), is included in most high school geometry books but rarely by name. It is often the second in a series of three theorems in a section within the circle chapter. This essay will "start in the middle" and show, with the aid of Geometer's Sketchpad, how the three theorems are related. To get the basic figure: 1.) Draw a circle. 2.) Pick a point, P, outside the circle. 3.) Construct any two secants to the circle through P. Mark the intersections with the circle: A, B, C, and D. Now, we need to find the relationship represented. The most logical suspicion would be something involving ratios or products. At this point, the reader may click on stcircle , or whatever is available, to look for the relationship. After trying a number of combinations, we discover that This of course is the same as (PA)(PB) = (PC)(PD), which is the usual statement of this theorem: i.e. "If two secants intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the product of the length of one secant segment and its external secant segment equal the product of the length of the other secant segment and its external secant segment." Depending of the experience and level of the reader, it might be sufficient to just see that the previous proportion works for a number of examples. However, to some it may be important to provide a formal proof. For that reason, the following is provided:

Jakob Steiner
Jakob Steiner 18 March April 1 ) was a Swiss mathematician. He was born in the village of Utzendorf, Canton of Bern . At eighteen he became a pupil of Heinrich Pestalozzi, and afterwards studied at Heidelberg . Thence he went to Berlin, earning a livelihood there, as in Heidelberg, by giving private lessons. Here he became acquainted with A. L. Crelle, who, encouraged by his ability and by that of N. H. Abel, then also staying at Berlin, founded his famous Journal (1826). After Steiner's publication (1832) of his Systematische Entwickelungen Wilhelm von Humboldt a new chair of geometry was founded for him at Berlin (1834). This he occupied till his death, which took place in Bern on the 1st of April Steiner's mathematical work was confined to geometry . This he treated synthetically, to the total exclusion of analysis, which he hated, and he is said to have considered it a disgrace to synthetical geometry if equal or higher results were obtained by analytical methods. In his own field he surpassed all his contemporaries. His investigations are distinguished by their great generality, by the fertility of his resources, and by such a rigour in his proofs that he has been considered the greatest geometrical genius since the time of Apollonius In his Systemalische Entwickelung der Abhundgigkeit geometrischer Gestalten von einander he laid the foundation of modern synthetic geometry . He introduces what are now called the geometrical forms (the row, flat pencil etc), and establishes between their elements a one-one correspondence, or, as he calls it, makes them

Steiner, Rudolf [r OO I u r] Pronunciation Key Steiner, Rudolf , German occultist and social philosopher. He was a leader in the founding of the German Theosophic Association (see theosophy ). In time he abandoned theosophy and developed a distinctive philosophy which he called anthroposophy; this philosophy attempts to explain the world in terms of man's spiritual nature, or thinking independent of the senses. Translations of his works include Investigations in Occultism (1920) and Philosophy of Spiritual Activity (1922). He also wrote many works on Goethe. STEINER POINT
The Steiner point of a triangle ABC is constructed as follows: First, let O be the circumcenter and K the symmedian point of ABC. The circle having segment OK as diameter is the Brocard circle . The line through O perpendicular to line BC passes through the Brocard circle in another point, a; similarly, obtain points b and c. The triangle abc is the 1st Brocard triangle. Now, construct the line through A parallel to line bc, the line through B parallel to line ca, and the line through C parallel to line ab. These three lines concur in the Steiner point, S. Steiner described this point in a different way in 1826. Forty years later, in J. Neuberg, "Sur le point de Steiner," 1886, p. 29, the point was constructed as described here and was given Steiner's name. Steiner also first described the ellipse passing through the vertices A, B, C and having the centroid of triangle ABC as its center. This Steiner ellipse is the ellipse of least area that passes through these points. It has in common with the circumcircle of ABC not only the points A, B, C but also the Steiner point. Homogeneous trilinear for the Steiner point are bc/(b^2 - c^2) : ca/(c^2 - a^2) : ab/(a^2 - b^2)
