JAKOB STEINER STEINER, JAKOB (1796-1863), Swiss mathematician, was born on the 18th of March 1796 at the village of Utzendorf (canton Bern). At eighteen he became a pupil of Heinrich Pestalozzi, and afterwards studied at Heidelberg. Thence he went to Berlin, earning a livelihood there, as in Heidelberg, by giving private lessons. Here he became acquainted with A. L. Crelle, who, encouraged by his ability and by that of N. H. Abel, then also staying at Berlin, founded his famous Journal (1326), After Steiners publication (1832) of his Systematische Entwickelungen he received, through Jacobis exertions, who was then professor at Konigsberg, an honorary degree of that university; and through the influence of G. J. Jacobi and of the brothers Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt a new chair of geometry was founded for him at Berlin (1834). This he occupied till his death, which took place in Bern on the 1st of April 1863, Steiners mathematical work was confined to geometry. This he treated synthetically, to the total exclusion of analysis, which he hated, and he is said to have considered it a disgrace to synthetical geometry if equal or higher results were obtained by analytical methods. In his own field he surpassed all hi~ contemporaries. His investigations are distinguished by their great generality, by the fertility of his resources, and by such a rigour in his proofs that he has been considered the greatest geometrical genius since the time of Apollonius. In a second little volume, Die geometrischen Consiructionen ausgefzilirt mittels! der geraden Linie und eines festen Kresses (1833), republished in 1895 by Ottingen, he shows, what had been already suggested by J. V. Poncelet, how all problems of the second order can be solved by aid of the straight-ed,ge alone without the use of compasses, as soon as one circle is given on the drawing-paper. He also wrote Vorlesungen ber synthetische Geometric, published posthumously at Leipzig by C. F. Geiser and H. Schroeter in 1867; a third edition by R. Sturm was published in 1887-1898.

Suche Jakob Steiner (18.3.1796 - 1.4.1863, Bern) Mathematiker-Lexikon / Herbert Meschkowski Der aus dem Berner Oberland stammende Autodidakt hatte an der Schule Pestalozzis den ersten mathematischen Unterricht, vor allem in der Geometrie. Er hörte einige Vorlesungen in Heidelberg und ging dann nach Berlin. Dort galt er bald als der beste Privatlehrer in Mathematik. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Arbeiten über geometrische Probleme in Crelles neu gegründetem Journal, wurde 1827 Oberlehrer am Gewerbeinstitut, 1834 a.o. Professor und Mitglied der Berliner Akademie. Steiner war ein grosser Geometer, dem das Erfassen räumlicher Zusammenhänge mehr lag als irgendein Kalkül. Er schrieb oft mit Jacobi zusammen, der ihm manchmal (mit analytischen Methoden) die Beweise lieferte, die Steiner nicht finden konnte. Eine besonders schöne Leistung Steiners ist seine Lösung des isoperimetrischen Problems. Er zeigte mit einfachen und anschaulichen Mitteln, dass keine vom Kreis verschiedene Kurve das isoperimetrische Extremalproblem lösen kann. Erst Weierstrass hat später darauf hingewiesen, dass damit die gestellte Aufgabe noch nicht gelöst ist: Man muss beweisen, dass das Problem überhaupt lösbar ist. Erst dann kann man mit Steiner behaupten, dass der Kreis unter allen einfach geschlossenen stetigen Kurven von gegebenen Umfang den grössten Inhalt einschliesst. Weierstrass hat diese Ergänzung des Steinerschen Beweises geliefert.

En 1903 y 1907 suspendió los exámenes universitarios porque solo se dedicaba a sus "diversiones" matemáticas. En 1912 fue animado a comunicar sus resultados a tres distinguidos matemáticos. Dos de ellos no le respondieron, pero sí lo hizo G.H. Hardy, de Cambridge, tenido por el más eminente matemático británico de la época. Hardy estuvo a punto de tirar la carta, pero la misma noche que la recibió se sentó con su amigo John E. Littlewood (v.) a descifrar la lista de 120 fórmulas y teoremas de Ramanujan. Horas más tarde creían estar ante la obra de un genio. Hardy tenía su propia escala de valores para el genio matemático: 100 para Ramanujan, 80 para David Hilbert, 30 para Littlewood y 25 para sí mismo. Algunas de las fórmulas de Ramanujan le desbordaron, pero escribió "...forzoso es que fueran verdaderas, porque de no serlo, nadie habría tenido la imaginación necesaria para inventarlas". Invitado por Hardy, Ramanujan partió para Inglaterra en 1914 y comenzaron a trabajar juntos.
