But FWIW, here goes. Back in prehistory, there were covariant and contravariant tensors. Later on, came homology, a word with impeccable credentials. The dual was called cohomology, the co- doubltess a shortening of contra-. Very bad choice. But that's the way it came. Peter Hilton pointed out that "homology" should be generic with cohomology as the covariant version and contrahomology as the contravariant one. I think he wrote a book using "homology" and "contrahomology", a kind of intermediate step. Good idea, but hopeless, really. It reminds me of my pet peeve, which is the use of the horseshoe for included-in-or-equal. Thus destroying the analogy with

22: Topological groups, Lie groups
Introduction
Lie groups are an important special branch of group theory. They have algebraic structure, of course, and yet are also subsets of space, and so have a geometry; moreover, portions of them look just like Euclidean space, making it possible to do analysis on them (e.g. solve differential equations). Thus Lie groups and other topological groups lie at the convergence of the different areas of pure mathematics. (They are quite useful in application of mathematics to the sciences as well!)

Raymond Louis Wilder
By Frank Raymond
R AYMOND LOUIS WILDER, LOVED by his family, friends, students, and colleagues, was a pioneer in the emerging discipline of topology and attained international acclaim for his creation and development of generalized manifolds. He also had a lifelong scholarly interest in anthropology and the foundations of mathematics. This erudition resulted in many articles and two important books on the cultural origins and development of mathematics. He was born in 1896 in Palmer, Massachusetts, and as a youth attended schools in that town. His family was musical, and he played the cornet in the family orchestra at dances and fairs. His flair at the piano resulted in employment at the local movie house to accompany the silent films. Love for music making never left him, although later he usually stuck with the classics. Wilder entered Brown University in 1914. This was interrupted by World War I, and he served two years in the Navy as an ensign. He returned to Brown and completed his bachelor's degree in 1920 and his master's degree in actuarial science in 1921. In the meantime, he had married the charming Una Maude Greene. They had three daughters: Mrs. Mary Jane Jessop of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Kermit Watkins of Altadena, California, Dr. Beth Dillingham of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a son Dr. David E. Wilder of Pound Ridge, New York. At the time of Wilder's death in Santa Barbara in 1982 there were in addition 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Una, survived him for an additional 19 years, dying at the age of 100 in Long Beach.

Overview The Archives of American Mathematics (AAM) is one of the collection components available at the Center for American History's Research and Collections Division . AAM is dedicated to preserving the records of American mathematicians and American mathematical organizations for use by mathematicians, historians, and others interested in the history and development of American mathematics and science. Although mathematics has had an immense influence on American culture, science, and technology, the materials available for the study of its history are meager, highly dispersed, and often in danger of destruction. Until the creation of the Archives of American Mathematics in 1975, there was no archival repository dedicated to preserving the historically valuable records of American mathematics. The Archives of American Mathematics thus serves as a national repository for the papers of mathematicians and the records of mathematical organizations for which appropriate local preservation is not available. The Archives of American Mathematics began with the acquisition and preservation of the papers of noted University of Texas mathematicians Robert Lee Moore and H. S. Vandiver. R. L. Wilder, one of Moore's early doctoral students, envisioned the R.L. Moore Papers as the nucleus of a broader collection. Several of Moore's students and colleagues in the UT Math Department subsequently donated their papers and, as the collection grew, papers of several prominent American mathematicians were added. In 1978, the
