Norman Steenrod 's father was Earl Lindsay Steenrod and his mother was Sarah Rutledge. Both were teachers but neither had any interest in mathematics. They had three children who survived childhood. Earl Steenrod taught mechanical drawing but had astronomy as a hobby and he interested Norman in this exciting subject while he was still a young boy. Sarah Steenrod had music as a hobby and she gave Norman a lifelong interest in this. Norman attended school in Dayton and he was such an outstanding pupil that he was able to complete the twelve school years in only nine. At this stage he was only fifteen years old and so before entering university he worked for two years as a tool designer. This was not an arbitrary occupation to put off two years, rather it was his elder brother's trade and Norman had been taught the job by his brother. The job had a very positive effect on Steenrod's finances too, for it gave him the extra cash needed to pay his university expenses. In 1927 Steenrod enrolled at the University of Miami at Oxford, Ohio. From there he moved to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he attended courses in physics, philosophy and economics. He took just one mathematics course but it was an important one for the future direction of his research, for he took a topology course given by Raymond Wilder who had been a student of

Norman Steenrod
Norman Steenrod (1910-1971) was one of the leading topologists of the twentieth century. Together with Samuel Eilenberg, he axiomatized homology theory and established the modern framework of algebraic topology, a subject invented by . The 1952 text Foundations of Algebraic Topology , known as "Eilenberg-Steenrod" to generations of topologists, codified the language and philosophy of twentieth-century topology. Steenrod also developed the theory of fiber bundles, and introduced the "Steenrod algebra" of cohomology operations. Steenrod was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Both his parents were teachers. He started his college education at Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio) in 1927, but was severely hampered by lack of funds and several times had to leave school to earn money. He transferred to the University of Michigan and graduated in 1932. It was at Michigan that he met R. L. Wilder, who encouraged his interest in topology and gave him his first research problem. By 1933 he had finished his first paper, which helped him obtain a fellowship at Harvard. After receiving a master's degree from Harvard in 1934, he enrolled at Princeton (on Wilder's advice); he completed his doctorate there in 1936 under the supervision of Lefschetz . He held positions at the University of Chicago and at Michigan before returning to Princeton in 1947, where he was promoted to full professor in 1952.

    Biographical Note
Norman Earl Steenrod (1910-1971) was a central figure in the post World War II development of algebraic topology. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 22, 1910, Steenrod attended college at Miami University and the University of Michigan (A.B., 1932). At the University of Michigan, he took courses by Raymond Louis Wilder, who guided the preparation of Steenrod's first two published papers (1934). After taking an M.A. at Harvard University (1934), Steenrod earned his Ph.D. with Solomon Lefschetz at Princeton University (1936). Steenrod returned to Princeton permanently after short periods on the faculties of the University of Chicago (1939-1942) and the University of Michigan (1942-1947). He died in Princeton on October 14, 1971.

Table of Contents Fibre bundles, now an integral part of differential geometry, are also of great importance in modern physicssuch as in gauge theory. This book, a succinct introduction to the subject by renown mathematician Norman Steenrod, was the first to present the subject systematically. It begins with a general introduction to bundles, including such topics as differentiable manifolds and covering spaces. The author then provides brief surveys of advanced topics, such as homotopy theory and cohomology theory, before using them to study further properties of fibre bundles. The result is a classic and timeless work of great utility that will appeal to serious mathematicians and theoretical physicists alike.
