8 IV. Mathematics over the next 400 years (700AD-1100AD)
Mahavira (or Mahaviracharya), a Jain by religion, is the most celebrated Indian mathematician of the 9 th century. His major work Ganitasar Sangraha was written around 850 AD and is considered 'brilliant'. It was widely known in the South of India and written in Sanskrit due to his Jaina 'faith'. In the 11 th century its influence was still being felt when it was translated into Telegu (a regional language of the south). Mahavira was aware of the works of Jaina mathematicians and also the works of Aryabhata (and commentators) and Brahmagupta , and refined and improved much of their work. What makes Mahavira unique is that he was not an astronomer, his work was confined solely to mathematics and he stands almost entirely alone in the history of Indian mathematics (at least up to the 14 th century) in this respect. He was a member of the mathematical school at Mysore in the south of India and his major contributions to mathematics include: Arithmetic:
GSS was the first text on arithmetic in the present form. He made the classification of arithmetical operators simpler. Detailed operations with fractions (and unit fractions), but no section on decimals (which were not an Indian invention).

Three brothers (Bala Krishna, Hari Krishna and Rama Krishna) met their brother-in-law Chandra Babu Naidu who came to bless his son-in-law Taraka Rathna (son of Mohana Krishna). In addition to these men, there was a row full of ladies from Nandamuri family sitting in the audiences. Now, isn't that, what a family is for - to bless a budding heir and encourage him? This extravagant event was organized on the 20th of October in Shalimar theater, Narayanaguda to mark the release of audio of NT Rathna's second venture 'Yuva Rathna'. This date marked another joyous celebration for the Nandamuri family. Cashews for human life?
For over 20 years, the villages near the cashew plantations in Kasargod district, Kerala, have been devastated by an unusually large number of cancer deaths, neurological disorders and different kinds of physical and mental impairment. Recent reports in the media and studies done in the area indicate a strong link between the spraying of a pesticide called endosulfan and the deteriorating health of the local people. The State administration appears to be oblivious to the situation. While the people have now turned to the courts for a solution, the tragedy of slow poisoning in Kasargod underlines the despotism of a certain kind of progress that is at the cost of human health and life, writes NIRMALA LAKSHMAN who travelled there recently. THE steep hillsides and the leafy gorges of the South Kanara- Kerala border glisten with a muddy beauty in the monsoon. Deep potholes punctuate the rain-washed roads and the uneven terrain is sometimes masked by sudden sheets of water that flow from the culverts onto the open highway. This is a land that is green and beautiful and yet its undulating topography harbours a deadly peril. In the small hamlets and villages scattered across Kasargod, death lurks in the air and water. For over 20 years, these villages have been devastated by an unusually large number of people dying from various forms of cancer, young adults with congenital neurological disorders, children with cerebral palsy and mental retardation, and lately an increase in the number of suicides in the area.

30 lose homes in Bellevue fire
by David A. Grant
Journal Reporter
BELLEVUE Approx-imately 30 people lost their homes after fire damaged or destroyed 10 units at a large apartment complex in the city's Crossroads area. More than 45 firefighters from Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland responded to the blaze at the Central Park East Apartments, an eight-building complex located at 15217 N.E. 16th Place, near Crossroads Mall. No one was injured by the fire, said Lt. Todd Dickerboom, a spokesman for the Bellevue Fire Department, although two firefighters were taken to Overlake Hospital for treatment of possible dehydration. The first alarm was called in at 7:39 p.m., Dickerboom said. Firefighters began arriving five minutes later and the blaze was under control at 8:24 p.m. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. However, Dickerboom said a fire inspector told him it was at least the fourth fire at the same complex in the past 10 years. ``There have been numerous calls over the years,'' Dickerboom said. Joyce Bottenberg, a Red Cross Disaster Team volunteer, said late Monday the manager of the apartment complex offered to put up all 30 people displaced by the fire in 10 vacant apartments at the complex.

Strange new stars and cosmic explosions early in the last millennium
A "Guest star" and the ancient skywatchers of China
Yang Wei-te was lying prostrate before the Chinese emperor one day early in July, AD 1054. Yang was the Director of the astronomical bureau in the Sung empire and was reporting the appearance of a ``guest star". He may have been somewhat fearful of not having been able to foretell the coming of this new star, which appeared in the sky, as if out of nowhere. Astronomy was risky business in the middle ages. The legend has it that the Chinese astronomers Ho and Hsi (two brothers) were beheaded by their emperor for failing to predict a solar eclipse. The guest star of AD 1054 was also seen by Japanese astronomers in June of the same year and recorded. This could possibly have been a reason why Yang seemed to be apprehensive while reporting his discovery, although information must have passed only slowly between widely separated places in that era. He made references to the position of the guest star not being in a nearby star cluster of the Hyades which he made out to indicate that a person of great wisdom and virtue was to be found in the part of China under the emperor. This was an oblique compliment, which was well received by the emperor and the discovery was recorded by the office of the archives, only to be stored and copied and recopied by Chinese record keepers over the centuries. Astronomical conjunctions take place when several planets line up in the sky, sometimes with a sliver of the moon nearby. The objects congregate into a small region of the sky, soon to disperse to different regions within a few days. The bright new star remained in the constellation of Taurus the bull. It remained visible in that position for almost two years before fading away. The planets and the moon move so quickly across the sky because they are relatively close to the earth. The fact that the new star remained "motionless" implies (to the modern astronomers) that this new object was far, far away.

    - Irreligion: What was that?
38 - Kali: He said: "The waning moon may decrease day by day, but how is it possible for wicked Kali-yuga to overcome they who have taken shelter of Lord Visnu's feet?"
39 - Irreligion: Friend, king of Kali-yuga, this wretch insulted you by calling you "wicked". O sinful wretched playwright, listen: You have insulted Kali, who uprooted the monarch religion and his soldiers purity, good conduct, austerity, tolerance, equanimity, self-control, discrimination, and other virtues, who blinded religion's friends that purify others with a glance, and who has me as his obedient servant.
40 - Stand! Sinner, Stand! Stand! You must say where religion is, there is Krsna, and where Krsna is, there is victory. But when there is no religion, where is Krsna, who alone can destroy Kali?
