Enigma of the Houses
By Dr Satya Prakash Chowdhary
"Which house system should an astrologer follow?" This is a question that most beginners ask. After sometime a majority do not ask anymore, not because they have solved the puzzle, but because they give up in desperation or let their favourite teacher or author decide for them! Years later, as they progress more and have a better comprehension of the fundamentals, they come back one whole circle and again ask the same question. Vedic astrologers face this problem to a lesser extent because the ancient texts use whole house system. But some traditional Vedic astrologers use the Sri Pati system which closely resembles Porphyry, while KP astrologers use Placidus. So sooner or later most research minded astrologers who are not content with blindly following what has been taught or told, start pondering over the question again. "Which house system should an astrologer use"?
There are at least over thirty ways of dividing the diurnal cycle into 12 parts ( this is what the houses are about ). The dispute is over what Geometry to use in dividing up the mundane sphere, over where the houses begin, and over whether they have any sharply defined boundaries at all. In other words the cusps are what we don't seem to agree upon. What to divide and how? This is where we seem to disagree. In order to assess the merits or demerits of a particular system, it becomes imperative that we first know the basis of at least some of the main systems. So let me first introduce the basis in as simple terms as possible ( and it is not a simple job folks ). I will try to stay away from the technicalities unless required, and also try not to introduce unnecessary controversies at this stage. To make it simple, I will broadly classify the house systems into two kinds-

45. The Secret Life Of Swami Muktananda
One was David Lynn, known as sripati, an exMarine Vietnam vet. Long-time devoteeAbed Simli saw the attack, but figured sripati had just flipped out.

Them are few things sadder than a good guru gone bad. The cynics among us may object that a "good guru" is a contradiction in terms and certainly the spectacle of corrupt and authoritarian cults in recent years has cast a pall over the role of spiritual teachers. Nevertheless I'm willing to maintain that a significant amount of wisdom and compassionate works have proceeded from various gurus and their followers, and I resist the impulse to write off the whole bunch as charlatans and power-trippers From all indication Swami Muktananda helped thousands of people in his day - a fact that even disillusioned ex-devotees don't dispute. However, the last few years of his life saw a proliferation of abuses which are only now coming to light William Rodarmor; a former lawyer, park ranger, wilderness trip leader and presently a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley journalism school has spent months interviewing former and current followers of Muktananda for this investigative article. CQ independently contacted his major sources and confirmed the authenticity of their quotes and allegations. -Jay Kinney

-Jay Kinney

Vol. 9 No. 8 (August 1999) pp. 347-350. JUDICIAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: MYTH OR REALITY? by Mark Gibney and Stanislaw Frankowski (Editors). Westport, Connecticut: Praeger, 1999. 207 pp. Reviewed by John C. Blakeman, Department of Political Science, Baylor University. This volume has an ambitious, yet salient theme: "the degree to which judges have (or have not) served as protectors of human rights." Whereas legal scholars, political scientists, and others who study human rights have generally pursued more doctrinal approaches to rights, this volume falls in with other recent scholarship that empirically investigates rights and the extent to which rights are, or are not, realized and protected. The volume’s focus on the judiciary centers around the question concerning "the extent to which courts have merely abided such practices or perhaps have even provided legitimation to repressive regimes—or, on the other hand, the degree to which courts have purposely interceded to attempt to bring about some change in stemming abusive governmental practice."(vii) In trying to answer this empirical question—do judges protect human rights or not—the editors, Gibney and Frankowski, have selected a broad series of essays covering judiciaries in specific states or geographical areas: Romania and Russian (Europe); Israel and the Occupied Territories; Latin America; India, the Philippines, and China; Australia; and the United States. The book is broadly comparative, as each chapter focuses on one specific state, or region, in order to answer the main question posed by the book.

Chautisha a medieval poetic genre in which each letter of the Bangla alphabet was used to compose a line of a poem. Since all 34 letters were used, these poems were known as chautisa (from chautrish , thirty-four). At times more than one line was composed using the same letter. Chautisha was also written in ancient sanskrit literature, mainly to compose eulogies for the deities, as, for example, in Vrihaddharmapurana Similar chautisha are also found in mangalkavya . In this style the first word of every line begins with a letter arranged in alphabetical order. mukundaram uses a 67-couplet chautisha for Sripati Saodagar in Kavikankan Chandi Sripati Saodagar's panegyric to the goddess Kali begins with the letter ' ' and ends with ' ', the compound letter of the Bangla alphabet. bharatchandra 's chautisha in Annadamangal in which Sundar eulogises Kali at the burning ghat and escapes death, consists of 50 couplets, beginning with ' ' and ending with ' Several medieval Muslim poets also composed chautisha, but drew their themes from arabic and persian sources.

By Roeland de Looff, email roeland@dirah.org This article is especially suited for advanced astrologers or for those who have followed the Course Applied Vedic Astrology (click here for information). All the concepts which are mentioned in this article are covered in the Course Applied Vedic Astrology. There is much speculation about how you can find information about past lives in a chart. However, there is a method for looking at this that has been used for many thousands of years in Tibet. I believe this method has a solid foundation. It is based upon the Buddhist wheel of life. The Buddhist wheel of life gives pictures of the illusions of life on earth. It gives insight in how to overcome these illusions so that moksha becomes possible. The Buddhist wheel of life is portrayed on tapestries which can be found in many Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The most while known tapestry is a tapestry found in a monastery in Sikkim. In this article you will see the connection between the Buddhist Wheel of Life and the astrological chart. An astrological analysis makes it possible to find out which spiritual path is the most suitable for a person, so that imbalances can disappear.

An incredible array of new cells is available for the worksheet, from charts to tables to graphs. Because of the totally flexible way that you can combine the context, charts and vargas for a given cell, the number of different cells runs over 10,000. You can access the new vastly expanded “Charts and Tables Selection” menu by left clicking once on any worksheet cell area. The “Charts and Tables Selection” menu consists of 4 main sections: Tables, Context, Special Charts, and Vargas. Tables contains an extensive list of all the kinds of chart, tables and graphs you can place on the worksheet.
“Context”
determines the actual birth information (longitude, latitude, date and time) used for calculating the selected table. “Special Charts” determines the house system and/or special lagna used for calculating/drawing the selected Chart, Table or Graph.
“Vargas”
specifies which divisional chart is used, in case “Sign” is selected under “Special charts” (for the other house systems the vargas do not make sense). The table that results from the above choice can be based on the natal chart or the partner’s chart, depending on the “Partner” checkbox.

I have included a few important details about just a few of the most
famous ancient Indian mathematicians from past years.
To my mind, the most important and most influential of these figures were
Aryabhatta and Panini. Aryabhatta had an excellent understanding of the
Keplerian Universe more than a thousand years before Kepler, while Panini
made a remarkable analysis of language, namely Sanskrit, which was not
matched for 2,500 years, until the modern Bacchus form, in the 20th
century.
