23. How Did I Learn How To Play?
One of the devotees in Uttamasloka Prabhu s kirtan group was sripati Prabhu.sripati Prabhu had a unique quality. He appreciated fine Bengali music.

Learn to Play
I had a teacher Like you, I needed a teacher to learn how to play the Mrdanga. I knew nothing about the mrdanga when I joined ISKCON in 1973 and for a few years after that. Sometimes I would pick up the drum and try to follow along, but I could never manage to even come close to what the devotees were playing, and finally, after being frustrated or embarrassed, I'd put the drum back down. Eventually, I wound up in England running a very successful Bhakta Program for training new devotees. We were making 80 new devotees a year, and I was responsible for training them. It became crucial for me to learn how to play the mrdanga because I was expected to lead many kirtans. Recognizing the need for devotees in ISKCON to learn how to play the Mrdanga properly, Srila Prabhupada requested Uttamasloka dasa to travel to India in the beginning of the 1970's to learn bona fide styles of Mrdanga playing and teach it to Western devotees. Uttamasloka dasa was initiated in 1971 in Detroit and became the temple president for Toronto and Chicago. He had association with Srila Prabhupada in the U.S., Canada and India. Under Srila Prabhupada's direction, Uttamasloka learned mrdanga from a variety of sources. He traveled in West Bengal, India, and studied Bengali mrdanga styles. He also studied under Srila Prabhupada's Godbrother, Krsna dasa Babaji Maharaja, and traveled to Jaipur, India, and studied how those Vaisnavas played the drum. According to the desire of Srila Prabhupada, he returned to America and started teaching devotees in the Chicago area how to play the Mrdanga.

24. History Of The Mrdanga In ISKCON
Later they returned to America and taught other devotees how to play. One ofthose devotees who learned how to play from that group was sripati dasa.

The history of the mrdanga in ISKCON
His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada When Srila Prabhupada boarded the Jaladuta to sail from Calcutta to New York in 1965, his mission was to establish temples all over the world. On board the ship he had 40 rupees, a trunk of books and a pair of karatals (hand cymbals). He did not have a mrdanga with him. In 1965 he incorporated his new Movement and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was born. As the Movement began to spread, new followers joined and new temples opened. Srila Prabhupada arranged to have the first mrdangas (clay drums) shipped from India so that his new disciples could play this traditional Vaisnava instrument in kirtans When the first mrdangas arrived in the temples, devotees started picking them up and practicing. Essentially, without a teacher, they taught themselves how to play. Although Srila Prabhupada himself did give one or two mrdanga lessons to some of his early students, by and large most devotees learned either by experimentation or from someone else who had learned from experimentation. Thus a wave of "ISKCON style"

27. India Shining, Arun Sripati
will be our enduring strength. Arun sripati May 7 2004 BaltimoreLinks The Magsaysay awards The Ashden Awards The Goldman Award
http://www.jhu.edu/aidjhu/aid_media/writings/India_Shining_Arun_Sripati.html
India is shining but do we know the reasons?
"India Shining" has been in the news in the last few months. While the NDA government tries to portray it as proof of it's success, the opposition parties are trying to downplay the hype and highlight the things that went "wrong". Once we factor in the natural tendencies of the two sides (the incumbent, to glorify; and the oppositon, to criticize), we are really not sure what to believe.
To Indians in India and diaspora like me around the world who share substantive cultural and emotional links to India, the India shining campaign or indeed, any positive news about India is a source of pride. We have seen how regardless of his views and opinions, an Indian running for governor in the US is the darling of the media. And we have seen our embarrassment at being asked about the communal violence in Gujarat, or even the drought-related suicides in Andhra.
Is India really shining? I submit that it is, but there are better reasons to be proud of than an intangible $100 billion in the reserves. India is shining because it has some of the most vibrant people's movements in the world. Indians have been regular recipients of major global awards in environment, developments and human rights. These are ample demonstrations of the worldwide recognition of our grassroots movements.
Take the Magsaysay awards. This year's recipient is Shanta Sinha, the founder of the MV Foundation, an organization that works against child labour. Apart from engaging with the governments on basic education policies and child labour laws, they pick child labourers off the streets and induct them into training camps for about 6-7 months to get them can you believe it to the 7th standard level. After that they get the children admitted into government schools and monitor their progress.

by Arun Sripati, September 2002 Aravinda's account of her experience teaching in Andhra . There is much to reflect on and profit from her deep understanding and sympathy with the issues of development, "Were I more interested in teaching geography I could have probably made each child recite the names of all the states within the hour. But the question of what is a country would have died, and along with it the finer feelings of unity, sense of duty towards the distressed." Tarun Jain: " Here is another essay written by Aravinda two years back . We often talk about cultural barriers in doing development work; these same barriers show themselves in governance as well. Much of official India is tremendously arrogant towards the knowledge of the villages. Efforts such as the water harvesting campaign in Rajasthan show that this knowledge is not only present, but effective as well!!"

Later Phases Origin and Early History Boring of different limbs for wearing ornaments is current among savage people all over the world. So its origin is very ancient. But even when civilization progressed, ornamentation continued, though it was refined. In the case of boring ears, it was undoubtedly ornamental in its origin, but later on it proved to be useful, and for emphasizing its necessity, it was given a religious colouring. Susruta says, "Ears of a child should be bored for protection (from diseases in his opinion) and decoration." He, again, explicitly prescribes the boring of ears for preventing hydrocele and hernia. Thus it was a precaution taken early in life, so that the chances of the above diseases may be minimized. The recognition of the Karnavedha as a Samskara and the ceremonies attached to it are of a late origin. Almost all the Gruhyasutras omit it. It is described only in the Katyayana sutras incorporated in the Parisista of the Paraskara Gruhyasutras. The later day Paddhatis describing this Samskara quote their authorities, "The Yajnaikas say so," which suggests it had no scriptural authority in the origin. The cause of the late inclusion of this ceremony in the list of the Samskaras is that its original purpose was decorative and there was the absence of any religious idea associated with it. It was only in a very wide sense that it entered the holy precincts of the Samskaras.

Living Or Dead? I The widow in the house of Saradasankar, the Ranihat zemindar, had no
kinsmen of her father's family. One after another all had died. Nor had
she in her husband's family any one she could call her own, neither
husband nor son. The child of her brother-in-law Saradasankar was her
darling. Far a long time after his birth, his mother had been very ill,
and the widow, his aunt Kadambini, had fostered him. If a woman fosters another's child, her love for him is all the stronger because she has no claim upon him-no claim of kinship, that is, but simply the claim of love. Love cannot prove its claim by any document which society accepts, and does not wish to prove it; it merely worships with double passion its life's uncertain treasure. Thus all the widow's thwarted love went out to wards this little child. One night in Sraban Kadambini died suddenly. For some reason her heart stopped beating. Everywhere else the

The Renunciation
I It was a night of full moon early in the month of Phalgun. The youthful
spring was everywhere sending forth its breeze laden with the fragrance
of mango-blossoms. The melodious notes of an untiring papiya (One of the
sweetest songsters in Bengal. Anglo-Indian writers have nicknamed it the
"brain-fever bird," which is a sheer libel.), concealed within the thick foliage of an old lichi tree by the side of a tank, penetrated a sleepless bedroom of the Mukerji family. There Hemanta now restlessly twisted a lock of his wife's hair round his finger, now beat her churl against her wristlet until it tinkled, now pulled at the chaplet of flowers about her head, and left it hanging over hex face. His mood was that of as evening breeze which played about a favourite flowering shrub, gently shaking her now this side, now that, in the hope of rousing her to animation.

While every political observer is preoccupied with Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, no one has any time for Maharashtra. The biennial elections to the state legislative council from the assembly constituency and a bye-election for one seat to the legislative council passed off without a whimper. All the major parties fielded candidates equal to their strength in the state legislative assembly and succeeded in persuading the Janata Dal secular candidate to withdraw from the race making it unanimous elections. Many big wigs like deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal heaved a sigh of relief. This was possible only because all the major parties and leaders decided to share seats as per their numerical strength. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was happy that he got the third seat cleared without much botheration as he had staked his position for the seat. Therefore, every body was happy. It turned out to be a short-lived complacency as the Janata Dal secular candidate Sripati Shinde declined to withdraw from the fray for the bye-election to the council held due to death of pro-Pawar Arun Mehta. Surprisingly, the Shiv Sena and the BJP did not put up any candidate in the fray turning it into a friendly battle between the Shard Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Janata Dal secular. Actually, friendly fights or 'Maitripurna Ladhat' is a word coined by Pawar when he headed the Progressive Democratic Front government in late Seventies.
