Research interests
I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. My research is primarily based in the Somatosensory Lab of Dr. Kenneth Johnson in the Krieger Mind/Brain Institute . I am also affiliated with the of Dr.Andreas Andreou
My research interests lie in understanding information processing in the brain. Some specific questions I have worked on include:
  • Neural coding Sensory information processing
    Information theory Energy efficiency
Current projects:
  • Receptive field analysis: We use the following stimuli to obtain the receptive fields of neurons. These receptive fields can then be used to predict the response to new stimuli.
white noise stimuli orthogonal stimuli spanning a subspace of the stimulus space.

Could you please give me a detailed explanation and/or history on the use of sripati house cusps. I've searched quite a few sources and have not had what I consider to be a valid or anywhere near accurate description of or the proper application for sripati cusps.
Your personal thoughts would be appreciated. Anything you can supply as far as history? Nobody we've talked to seems to know. I'm hoping that I've come to the right source.

    Hello
The Vedic way of reading charts is to place the most emphasis on the signs being the houses. So, the Rasi chart (which means "Sign" chart) is the main chart by far. But, as you know, when you go more north or south away from the equator, the signs get very unequal in their size as houses, and thus calculated house systems become more necessary. The Sripati system is our un-sign-equal house system much like the western house systems are. It is calculated in the same way as Porphyry, but the cusps become the middle of the houses, and the starts of the houses are the equa-distances between the cusps.
We call the cusps therefore bhava madyas (house middles) and the points inbetween, the start points or bhava sandhis.

Politics Political Big Wigs Sripati Mishra By : Dilip Awasthi Congress preferred yet another humdrum politician - Sripati Misra, as Singh's alternative. His two-year rule proved as innocuous as the man himself.
Elected to the Vidhan Sabha in 1962 for the first time, he was made deputy speaker of the house in 1967. He crossed over to Charan Singh's Bhartiya Kranti Dal (BKD) and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1969. Charan Singh inducted him as a cabinet minister and he was nominted to the Vidhan Parishad in 1970. He joined the Congress again in 1971. He was elected as Congress MLA in 1980 and was elected unopposed as the speaker of the U.P. assembly on July 7. Born on January 20, 1924 in Shekhupur village of Jaunpur, Misra studied in Varanasi and Lucknow to complete his MA, LLB. He was appointed a judicial magistrate in 1954 and worked in the same capacity till 1958 after which he joined politics.
Misra was literally trembling when a couple of journalists informed him that he was to be the next chief minister of U.P. His regime had controversies all around right from mal-administration, increase in corruption and casteism. Whenever under pressure from the detractors, Misra used to point to his old night-gown, " This (CM's position) was the maximum I could ever think off. I treat it like this gown which I take off each night without feeling a pinch". A virtual revolt by Congress MLAs sealed Misra's fate. Sripati Chandrasekhar, Indian Demographer, Dies at 83
    By DOUGLAS MARTIN
Sripati Chandrasekhar, an Indian demographer and government minister who fought a tireless and so far losing battle to reduce his country's soaring population, died on June 14 in San Diego, Calif. He was 83. He died after two strokes, his wife, Ann Downes Chandrasekhar, said. Dr. Chandrasekhar lived mainly in La Jolla, a section of San Diego, and southern India, but roamed the world teaching and preaching his message that ever more Indians living ever longer lives meant disaster. He urged sterilization for men, easy abortions for women and a voluntary year with no sex for married couples. From his perspective, too few people followed his advice. As China reined in the growth of its population, India's has grown from 340 million people at independence in 1947 to more than a billion. It is on course to surpass China's population, now 1.27 billion, by the middle of this century. "He felt sadness and regret," his wife, said.

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Mathematics in India History of Mathematics in India In all early civilizations, the first expression of mathematical understanding appears in the form of counting systems. Numbers in very early societies were typically represented by groups of lines, though later different numbers came to be assigned specific numeral names and symbols (as in India) or were designated by alphabetic letters (such as in Rome). Although today, we take our decimal system for granted, not all ancient civilizations based their numbers on a ten-base system. In ancient Babylon, a sexagesimal (base 60) system was in use. The Decimal System in Harappa In India a decimal system was already in place during the Harappan period, as indicated by an analysis of Harappan weights and measures. Weights corresponding to ratios of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 have been identified, as have scales with decimal divisions. A particularly notable characteristic of Harappan weights and measures is their remarkable accuracy. A bronze rod marked in units of 0.367 inches points to the degree of precision demanded in those times. Such scales were particularly important in ensuring proper implementation of town planning rules that required roads of fixed widths to run at right angles to each other, for drains to be constructed of precise measurements, and for homes to be constructed according to specified guidelines. The existence of a gradated system of accurately marked weights points to the development of trade and commerce in Harappan society.
