Alicia Spottiswoode
Alicia Anne Spottiswoode is remembered as the composer of "Annie Laurie" (1835). She was born at Westruther (Berwickshire) on 24 June 1810 and in 1836 she married Lord John Scott, brother of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch (d1860). She died on 12 March 1900. She was a collector of traditional songs and wrote 69 of her own, often basing them on older pieces, and this was what she did in the case of "Annie Laurie", whose original form was a poem by William Douglas of Fingland (Kirkcudbright) with the tune "Kempie Kaye". Spottiswoode altered the words and melody and added a third verse. AC

    Shakespeare live
    on stage -
well, at least Patrick Spottiswoode! On November 10 th Mr Spottiswoode let the students gain an insight into Shakespearean times concerning the theatre and its connection with society at that time (Shakespeare lived from 1564 to1616). He talked about the social aspects of theatre in Shakespeare’s days (it was pure proletarian entertainment to go to the theatre, that‘s why kings and queens let theatre companies come to their courts), gave a successful summary of "Twelfth Night" by using some of the audience to show the play‘s confusion by men playing women playing men - in Shakespearean times women on stage were strictly forbidden! So whenever Will wanted to express changes from day to night, weather or time passing, he had to make use of little hints for the audience in his texts, therefore listening was at least as important as watching in the theatre (and successfull actors must have been quite convincing and extremely active on stage as well). After a short excursion into the world of potatoes (...) the whole hall recited lines from "Romeo and Juliet" with full body-employment.

OBITUARY. 489 OMttuarv, William Spottiswoode,* President of the Royal Society, was born in 1825. He was formerly connected for many years, and very intimately, with the Royal Institution as its Secretary, and with the British Association as its Treasurer, and otherwise more engaged in scientific administration than any of his contemporaries ; he served on the Council of the Royal Geographical Society, and for two years, 1862-64, also fulfilled the duties of Honorary Secretary. He was presumptive heir to a large property, and was educated at Eton, Harrow, and Oxford, but while still residing at the latter place he was suddenly summoned to London to manage under many difficulties the business of his father as Queen's printer. He responded bravely to the appeal, and it is one of the most characteristic points of Mr. Spottiswoode's honourable career that during the whole of the laborious and anxious years of his early manhood be contrived to set aside a considerable portion of each day for scientific and literary pursuits. He thus acquired the art of swift and thorough achievement, by means of which every scrap of his time was utilised. Moreover, having an intellectual insight of the highest order and a singularly sound judgment, all his work stood and the results accumulated. His administrative success became * By Francis Galton, F.n.s. No. VIII.-Ava. 1883.] CIibPDF - www.fastio.com

    William Livingston - Lord Kilsyth
A unique and fascinating document which is nearly 300 years old - signed by William Livingstone - Lord Kilsyth - has finally arrived back in Kilsyth from the USA following a successful Ebay auction bid by a small group of historical enthusiasts from Kilsyth. Top secret at the time, it now sheds new light on the illegal laundering of funds from Scotland to Rome to continue the Jacobite dream of regaining the British throne. Written during the lowest point in Jacobite fortunes between the adventures of the old and young Pretenders, (Bonnie Prince Charlie was born on 31st Dec 1720) it also reveals the deep and hitherto hidden complicity of the Edmonstone family of Colzium and Duntreath in the Jacobite conspiracy. Signed by Lord Kilsyth as "W. Livingstone", in exile in Rome with the Old Pretender, 14 June, 1721, and written to Sir Edmonstone at Kilsyth, the document particularly concerns the provision of funds for the Jacobite cause. addressed to Sir G Edmonstone at Kilsyth Piazza di (illegible) 23 Rome 14 June 1721 Sir
