(on William McCarthy and Julia David, The Evolution of Enterprise Information Systems From Sticks and Jars Past Journals and Ledgers Toward Interorganizational Webs of Business Objects and Beyond
(Please first read my Introduction to these comments on your papers.) Your setting of the scene What a magnificently comprehensive yet beautifully concise opening sentence! :- The semantic distance between the reality of a business enterprise and its implemented model its information system has slowly decreased as measurement techniques, representation models, and computer technology have progressed. In our world of "penetrating computerization" into which we are being pushed [3(firstly), 12], we must rather proactively work to reduce that distance, so there you have most usefully put your finger on a key cutting-edge of progress towards what I called "profound congeniality" - as against mere "user-friendliness" - that we must be working towards (See [Jeff] and find "congenial" in my faq). More than we often appreciate, we are creating the environment (Find "Zemanek" in my faq) in which people will "live, move and have their being". See also my comments above à propos Mark Baker’s paper, on the increasing identification of UI objects with real entities. Your sentence also nicely circumscribes the epistemological justifications for MACK.

    27. Christopher Spottiswoode Introduces His Comments On The Other Position Papers:
Christopher spottiswoode introduces his comments on the other position papers, andsummarizes his mere userfriendliness in the user interface Jeff, william, 3
    http://jeffsutherland.org/oopsla96/spotcrit.html
Christopher Spottiswoode introduces his comments on the other position papers, and summarizes his position by reference to them:
Introduction Italics in these comments denote quotations from your papers, except where it is clearly not the case. First author firstnames in brackets are references to my comments on your papers, in approximate order of decreasing relevance here of my comments and not of the relevance of your papers! Numerals refer to my answers to the questions in my faq. "[paper(innocent questions)]" refers to the section in my paper headed "Some innocent questions for the OMG...". "[3(firstly)]" refers to the "Firstly" item of my answer to faq question 3. Hopefully the hectic start of the new year has passed for the academics among you, and all of you are hopefully still in the reinvigorated surge of the post-vacation and post-OOPSLA season? If so, good. It seems to me from far that this Business Object Workshop still has much unfinished business. Thank you Jeff for your continued support, despite all: I am still hiding the details of MACK (leaving that apparent technical "black hole" - see under "trade secrets" below), so there is still no easily convincing evidence of my proposed alternative to the current favourites such as Java, the Web, ActiveX, CORBA etc. That weakens my present criticisms of them (and I content myself with Medawar’s Dictum: "Theories are not displaced by facts, they are replaced by better theories." [paper(different perspective)]) So, for an idiosyncratic intervention such as mine to be given such support, the observed yet unmet needs of our industry - not to mention those of our customers - must indeed be enormous! (And that is of course nothing new to Jeff: see [Jeff(need for tools)].)

    William Spottiswoode (1825-1883)
After graduating William Spottiswoode took over the family printing house, but continued to take an active interest in mathematics and physics. His main contributions were to geometry, optics, and electricity (particularly electrical discharge in rarified gases), but an 1861 paper On typical mountain ranges: an application of the calculus of probabilities to physical geography , which attempted to use statistical methods to distinguish between competing geological theories, was apparently the inspiration for Francis Galton's work on statistics. Spottiswoode was also renowned for his interest in linguistics and oriental languages. He became President of the Royal Society in 1878 and still held that office at the time of his death in 1883. Further information about Spottiswoode
    Henry John Stephen Smith (1826-1883)
Henry Smith was one of the most influential British pure mathematicians of the second half of the nineteenth century. He won the major mathematical prizes of both the German and French Academies of Sciences. He was elected Savilian Professor of Geometry in 1861, and became Keeper of the University Museum in 1874. Smith graduated with First Class Honours in both Classics and Mathematics after less than two years at the college, and won the major University Prizes in both subjects. He was also President of the Oxford Union. In 1849 the College appointed him its Mathematics Lecturer but also asked him to set up and run the first college chemistry teaching laboratory in Oxford, for which task he equipped himself by studying in Oxford with Neville Story-Maskelyne and at the Royal College of Chemistry with August Hofmann.

They walk, and speak not O, hold me not with silence over-long! Where I was wont to feed you with my blood, I'll lop a member off and give it you In earnest of a further benefit, So you do condescend to help me now. They hang their heads No hope to have redress? My body shall Pay recompense, if you will grant my suit.
