I n a room of the Tower of London in August 1189, two people who were about to be married met for the first time. This twist of fate or act of destiny would have a far-reaching effect on English history. The young lady was Isabel de Clare, sole heiress of Richard Strongbow de Clare, Earl of Pembroke and Striguil, and Aoife, daughter of Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster. The man was William Marshal, the second son of John the Marshal and Sibyl, sister of Patrick, Earl of Salisbury. There are no accounts of this first meeting nor of their marriage ceremony, but this was the final step in the making of one of the greatest knights and magnates of medieval English history. W illiam Marshal's life is well documented because less than a year after his death in 1219, his eldest son William II commissioned a record of his father's life. "L' Historie de Guillaume le Marechal," is a metrical history of a man and of the knightly class in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century. Little is known about the writer of "L' Historie" except that his first name was Jean, that he personally witnessed some of the events in Marshal's later life, and that he had access to Marshal's squire John D'Erley. The point of view is that of the secular knightly class and not of the ecclesiastical class. The events recorded in "L' Historie" can be verified in most instances by the official records in the Pipe Rolls, Charter Rolls, Close Rolls, Patent Rolls, Oblatis Rolls, and chronicles of the times.

Agassiz, Jean Louis [1807 - 1873]
Agassiz was a Swiss born geologist and zoologist. He emigrated to the United States in 1846 and was a professor of natural history at Harvard University from 1847-73. He developed the novel theory that a previous ice age once engulfed the entire surface of the earth and supposedly this ice age separated the two "creation events" of god. Determined to prove himself right, Agassiz spent time in the Amazon Basin trying to find proof that glaciers were once there. He was not successful.
Influence
Charles Darwin and Louis Agassiz started a correspondence in the mid-1840's and soon became good friends. When Darwin was thinking about starting a comprehensive study of barnacles in 1846, Agassiz wrote to Darwin that such research was in great demand and he should by all means pursue it. Indeed, when Agassiz heard that Darwin was looking for different varieties of barnacles to study he sent him a huge crate full of specimens. When "Origin of Species" was published in 1859, Darwin sent Agassiz a complimentary 1st edition. Agassiz was not very impressed with Darwin's theory of natural selection, being convinced rather that each species was a separate divine creation ordained by god. During the late 1800's Agassiz became one of the most influential opponents of evolutionary theory in the United States.

WILLIAM I
William I was King of Scotland from 1165 to 1214.
William I was king of Prussia and German emperor. He was born in 1797 at Berlin the son of Frederick William III . of Prussia and died in 1888. He first saw service in the war of liberation against Napoleon I , and for his gallantry in the 1814 campaign in France received the iron cross. His reactionary sympathies at the time of the revolution of 1818 in Berlin made him very unpopular, and he was compelled to take refuge in England . In 1858 the mind of the king, Frederick William , gave way, and Prince William became regent . In the beginning of 1861 William succeeded to the throne of Prussia. In September 1862 he called Bismarck to office, and in 1863 the Schleswig-Holstein question came to the fore , and embittered the relations of Austria and Prussia. In 1866 the Austro-Prussian war broke out, and at the conclusion of the war the Prussian ascendency in Germany was assured. The war of 1870 - 1871 completed the
