Der vorläufig erste Band enthält eine gedruckte Auswahl aus der reichhaltigen Korrespondenz, die den Aufstieg Sommerfelds zu einem der bedeutendsten theoretischen Physiker des 20. Jahrhunderts begleitet, von der Assistenzstelle beim Mathematiker Felix Klein in Göttingen über Professuren für Mathematik bzw. Mechanik in Clausthal und Aachen schließlich zum Münchner Ordinariat, wo er seine Schule der theoretischen Physik begründete. Die Herausgeber teilen die überstrichene Periode in vier zeitliche Abschnitte ein, 1892-1899, 1900-1906, 1907-1912 und 1913-1918, in denen sich Sommerfelds Interessen und Wissenschaft wesentlich wandelten, wie sie in einleitenden Essays andeuten. Die Korrespondenz im ersten Abschnitt bis 1906 mit akademischen Kollegen und Technikern über die Fachgrenzen hinaus ließ ihn nicht nur zum frühen Experten in technischen Fragen, von Schmiermitteln bis zu Problemen der Lokomotivtechnik werden, sondern auch in das spätere Fachgebiet der theoretischen Physik hineinwachsen. Letzteres beförderte insbesondere die Übertragung der Herausgabe des Bandes über mathematische Physik in Kleins monumentaler Encyklopädie der mathematischen Wissenschaften , denn dadurch geriet er mit den Großen dieses Faches, von Ludwig Boltzmann über Albert Einstein, Hendrik Lorentz bis Max Planck und Willy Wien in lebendigsten Austausch und begründete zugleich tiefe Freundschaften. Anschließend, von 1907 bis 1911, schloss sich Sommerfeld den großen neuen Systemen von Relativitäts- und Quantentheorie an und wurde ihr sehr aktiver Vertreter. Ein langjähriges Interesse an den Problemen der Elektrodynamik und Optik verband ihn mit Physikern und Astronomen, besonders dem jugendlichen Karl Schwarzschild. Seine frühzeitige Neugier an der Entschlüsselung der Natur der Röntgenstrahlen gipfelte 1912 in der Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlinterferenzen an Kristallgittern in seinem Münchner Institut durch Max von Laue, Walter Friedrich und Paul Knipping, eine geniale Meisterleistung der Zusammenarbeit von Theorie und Experiment.

Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld Born: Died: 26 April 1951 in Munich, Germany Show birthplace location Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Arnold Sommerfeld Minkowski and Wien Hilbert Hurwitz and Lindemann Franz Neumann Klein 's assistant. Hurwitz Lindemann left in the same year as Sommerfeld. Two years later Hilbert Klein who at this time was heavily involved in applying the theory of functions of a complex variable, and other pure mathematics, to a range of physical topics from astronomy to dynamics. Sommerfeld's first work under Klein 's supervision was an impressive piece of work on the mathematical theory of diffraction. His work on this topic contains important theory of partial differential equations. From 1897 Sommerfeld taught at Clausthal where he became professor of mathematics at the mining academy. Then, three years later, he became professor of mechanics at the Technische Hochschule of Aachen. In 1897 he began a 13 year study of gyroscopes woking on a 4 volume work jointly with Klein . In 1906 he became professor of theoretical physics at Munich and worked on atomic spectra. He studied the hypothesis that X-rays were waves and proved this by using crystals as three dimensional diffraction gratings. From 1911 his main area of interest became quantum theory. Sommerfeld's work led him to replace the circular orbits of the Niels Bohr atom with elliptical orbits; he also introduced the magnetic quantum number in 1916 and, four years later, the inner quantum number. It was theoretical work attempting to explain the inner quantum number that led to the discovery of electron spin.

His main contributions were the (semiclassical) theory of fine- structure and the (q.m.) theory of metals. Through his books and his Munioh school he exerted an enormous influence.
