There he came in contact with the special theory of relativity by Albert Einstein , which was not yet widely accepted at that time. His mathematical contributions to the theory helped its accepting among the sceptic physicists. Later he became one of the founders of the quantum mechanics , many of his students became famous of their own - most notably Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli In Sommerfeld applied Fermi-Dirac statistics to the Drude model of electrons in metals . The new theory solved many of the problems predicting thermal properties that model had. Sommerfeld died in in Munich from injuries after a traffic accident.

Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld Born: 5 Dec 1868 in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) Died: 26 April 1951 in Munich, Germany Arnold Sommerfeld attended the Gymnasium in Königsberg. Two slightly older pupils at the same school were Minkowski and Wien. Sommerfeld studied at the University of Königsberg where he was taught by Hilbert, Hurwitz and Lindemann. At this time the University of Königsberg was famous for its school of Theoretical Physics which had been founded by Franz Neumann. However Sommerfeld's interests vere in mathematics rather than physics. In 1891 Sommerfeld was awarded his doctorate from Königsberg. In 1893 Sommerfeld left Königsberg for Göttingen where he became Klein's assistant. Hurwitz had left Königsberg a year before Sommerfeld and Lindemann left in the same year as Sommerfeld. Two years later Hilbert was to follow Sommerfeld to Göttingen. At Göttingen, the direction of Sommerfeld's research was immediately influenced by Klein who at this time was heavily involved in applying the theory of functions of a complex variable, and other pure mathematics, to a range of physical topics from astronomy to dynamics. Sommerfeld's first work under Klein's supervision was an impressive piece of work on the mathematical theory of diffraction. His work on this topic contains important theory of partial differential equations. Other important work which he undertook while at Göttingen included the study of the propogation of electromagnetic waves in wires and the study of the field produced by a moving electron.

Branch of Science Physicists Nationality German Sommerfeld, Arnold (1868-1951) Brilliant German physicist who modified Niels Bohr's atomic theory to include elliptical orbits. He also included special relativity and obtained the Sommerfeld model for energy in which energy levels were split into multiple components. He published his results in Atombau und Spektrallinien (1922) and wrote a classic optics text called simply Optics. Sommerfeld was also the first to solve a diffraction problem exactly, using the Maxwell equations to find the solution for radiation incident on a half-infinite infinitely thin conducting plane. This led him in 1916 to predict a series of spectral lines based on the relativistic effects that would occur with elliptical orbits. Friedrich Paschen (1865-1945) undertook the spectroscopic work required and confirmed Sommerfeld's predictions. Sommerfeld was active as a theoretician both in physics and engineering, and he produced a four-volume work on the theory of gyroscopes 1897-1910 with mathematician Felix Klein
