Mary Fairfax Somerville Nasce nel 1780 in un piccolo borgo scozzese, f iglia di un ammiraglio, Mary Fairfax studia danza pianoforte, disegno. Il precettore dei suoi fratelli gli procura gli "Elementi" di Euclide e un libro di algebra; Mary li legge di nascosto, sopratutto la notte, contro la volontà del padre. Una volta sposata continua a studiare intensamente lottando con i suoi impegni fami liari e le ristrettezze economiche. Rimasta vedova, sposa Somerville, un uomo colto che la incoraggia e la stima. Mary compie viaggi in Europa e frequenta il mondo della cultura. ATTIVITA' Traduce e condensa in un solo volume la " Meccanica Celeste" di Laplace, in cinque volumi. Il testo dal titolo " The mecanism of heavens" viene pubblicato nel 1831,e raccoglie lo spirito dei metodi di Laplace, i calcoli fondamentali e le figure necessarie ad una chiara comprensione. Mary Somerville si occupa anche di astronomia , producendo molte opere. Nel 1869, a 89 anni, pubblica " Sulla scienza molecolare e microscopica", il suo ultimo lavoro scientifico. The Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British Scientists Editors Introduction Proposed Entries Sample Entries - John Herschel Mary Fairfax Somerville SOMERVILLE, Mary Fairfax Mary Fairfax was born in Jedburgh, Scotland in 1780 and died on 29 November 1872 in Naples. Her father, Vice-Admiral Sir William George Fairfax, did not approve of education for girls. Apart from one year at a fashionable boarding school at Musselburgh, Mary was self-taught. She studied animals and flowers; read French; perfected her Latin, in order to read Newton’s Principia , and worked through an algebra handbook and Euclid’s Elements of Geometry Mary married a cousin, Captain Samuel Greig, in 1804 but, after bearing him two sons, she was widowed in 1807. In 1812 she married another cousin, Dr William Somerville, who was supportive of her passion for science. The couple had four children together, and lived in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1816. Mary mixed with eminent figures, including George Airy, John and William Herschel, Charles Lyell and William Whewell, and she numberd among her foreign acquaintances and correspondents Dominique Arago, Joseph Gay-Lussac, Alexander von Humboldt and Pierre Simon, Marquis de Laplace.

When did my Somerville's first arrive in North America? Family lore has it that it was in 1712. But for our particular branch of the family, evidence points to the pre-Confederation arrival at Quebec in 1858 of Alexander, his wife Emma Binks and six children: James, Bridget Emma, Francis, Alexander, Roger Mowbry, and Henry Drummond. Apparently Alexander, youngest of 11 children was preceeded by his older brother Peter in 1833. The family origins are from Scotland as evidenced by the writings of Alexander himself in his book "The Autobiography of a Working Man" first published in 1848. Alexander tells his children that there is a range of hills in the middle of Scotland called the Ochills out of which a rapid running river called the Devon flows, tumbling headlong over linns and through chasms in its progress to the low country. Near to where this river is wildest, in the parish of Muckhart, their grandfather James was born in 1760. The place was an upland farm, called Nether-Aichlin-Sky. here.
