IREX: How was it possible for a young biologist to overcome the barriers of the Iron Curtain and travel to the United States? Nesen: Toward the end of 1958, there was a period of warming of relations between the United States and the USSR. An agreement involving the exchange of specialists between the two countries was signed. The selection process in the Soviet Union was very strict. Only two people from Ukraine were selected: a physicist from Odessa and myself. The selection process was so difficult and complicated that only 17 candidates were selected when 20 were supposed to go. To my mind what helped me most of all was my good knowledge of English. IREX: Who was among the selected specialists and where did their careers take them?

Yaroslavl State University (YSU) Higher education in Yaroslavl has a long history. In 1803, Yaroslavl Demidov Lyceum of Law was established which became one of the best-known educational Russian institutions. Many outs- tanding professors lectured at the Lyceum. There was a number of remarkable lawyers and politicians among its graduates. In 1918, the Lyceum was transformed into the University. Originally, it had only the Department of Social Sciences with the Divisions of Economics, Law, History, and Cooperation. In the Fall of 1919, the Workers' Department and the Department of Medicine were organized. A year later, the Department of Agriculture was opened. Then, the Pedagogical Department was formed on the basis of Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute and some Divisions of the Department of Social Sciences. It trained spe- cialists in biology, geography, physics, mathematics, and lite- rature. In 1924, University departments were reorganized into the independent institutions of higher education, and the Uni- versity itself ceased to operate. Yaroslavl University was reopened in 1970.

Institute of Problems of Mechanical Engineering of Russian Academy of Science The Laboratory of structure and phase transitions in condensed media. The "Structural and Phase Transitions in Condensed Media Laboratory" was established in 1992. Staff of Laboratory is 6 workers today; two of the workers gained Doctor's degree and another two have Candidate's degree. In addition, the laboratory draws various specialists in fulfillment of different tasks. In particular, at present, three jointed scientists, the candidates of science, work in the laboratory: two of them are on the staff of Ioffe Physical Technical Institute, while another one is a Scientific worker at St.- Petersburg Technological Institute.
