    June 2000
    ICMI Executive Committees 1908-1998
During the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Rome in 1908, the following resolution was adopted:
"The Congress, recognizing the importance of a comparative study on the methods and plans of teaching mathematics at secondary schools, charges Professors F. Klein, G. Greenhill, and Henri Fehr to constitute an International Commission to study these questions and to present a report to the next Congress."

This resolution was submitted on the initiative of David Eugene Smith, who had suggested the idea of such an international commission three years earlier in the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, in response to an article by Fehr. It marks the inception of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction - although the Commission was known in its earlier years as the "International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics".
Over the years various Executives Committees of the Commission (first known as "Central Committees") have succeeded one another. The list of their officers and members appears below. This information has been gathered from the following sources:
    • Georges de Rham, "L'Enseignement Mathématique - Revue internationale et la Commission internationale de l'enseignement mathématique (CIEM) - Notice historique", ICMI Bulletin 7 (1976) 29-34.

by Vladimir G Maz'ya (Linköping University, Sweden) (St Petersburg State University, Russia)
The spaces of functions with derivatives in L p , called the Sobolev spaces, play an important role in modern analysis. During the last decades, these spaces have been intensively studied and by now many problems associated with them have been solved. However, the theory of these function classes for domains with nonsmooth boundaries is still in an unsatisfactory state. In this book, which partially fills this gap, certain aspects of the theory of Sobolev spaces for domains with singularities are studied. We mainly focus on the so-called imbedding theorems, extension theorems and trace theorems that have numerous applications to partial differential equations. Some of such applications are given. Much attention is also paid to counter examples showing, in particular, the difference between Sobolev spaces of the first and higher orders. A considerable part of the monograph is devoted to Sobolev classes for parameter dependent domains and domains with cusps, which are the simplest non-Lipschitz domains frequently used in applications. This book will be interesting not only to specialists in analysis but also to postgraduate students.

Elena Yanovskaya (St.Petersburg Institute for Economics and Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences) It is well known that the direct generalization to non transferable (NTU) games of the concepts like the Shapley value, the nucleolus, the kernel and others, based on a cardinal notion of excess, is impossible. L.Shapley (1969) generalized the solution defined by him earlier (the famous Shapley value) for TU games to a class of non transferable games. The transfer Shapley value is defined to be an efficient payoff vector which is the Shapley value of the corresponding lambda-transfer TU game. The known existence theorems of the transfer Shapley value were proved either for compactly generated NTU games (Shapley 1969, Rosenmuller 1981) permitting zero weights of players utilities, or (Aumann 1985, Kern 1985, Mas-Colell 1980) for NTU games whose sets of payoff vectors available to the grand coalition were not allowed to have supporting hyperplanes parallel to one or several coordinate axes. In such games the weights of utilities in lambda-transfer games are positive.

This science seems the most beautiful to me. Indeed, most of heavenly bodies studied by astronomers, such as comets, planets, stars, and galaxies, are wonderful. In my opinion, however, it is not obligatory to be a scientist to make sure of that. Quite enough to simply look up at the night sky. In our everyday life we rarely stare at the sky though. But marvelous things we enjoy are certainly on our Earth as well. They are around us. Let me only cite a passage from a Queen song as an example: We're having a miracle on earth
