SERGEI BORISOV: IRANIAN SERIAL KILLER WRAPPED HIS VICTIMS IN YASHMAK
A man, arrested in the Iranian city of Meshhed, is suspected of killing 19 women. Police of the Horassan Province have reportedly been hunting for him for several months day and night. According to police, his victims were predominantly prostitutes.
Meshhed, Iran’s second largest city, is located in the country’s north-east, not far from the border with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The area has never been noted for peace and quiet – refugees are always hoarding there, drugs are being trafficked intensely.
The maniac’s first victim was discovered precisely a year ago, July 28th, 2000, while the latest murder was committed July 24the this year.
All the 19 victims were prostitutes, and this fact led the police to think of religious motives of the crime. In Iran, there are various extremist groups which are too much keen to strengthen the social morals and eradicate prostitution and corruption.
In 1998, Iran also saw a series of killings where Iranian intellectuals and dissidents were major targets. According to some Iranian MPs, those killings were committed by uncontrolled members of Iranian intelligence structures.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
    (a) Any wars etc.
    (b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
    (c) Major discoveries of the time
    (d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

FarShores News Posted Aug 29.01 Russian Group's 'Sensational Discoveries' Greeted With Skepticism
[Original headline: Russian scientists see flying saucers MOSCOW - A group of Russian scientists has come up with sensational claims of fundamental discoveries. However, their assertions provide more questions than answers about the current, deplorable state of Russian science. The group, headed by Professor Valerian Sobolev, claims "seven major discoveries". One of these relates to a new electrochemical process, which allows production of new, previously unknown types of materials from silicon. Sobolev, who heads the Material Technology Research Center in Volgograd, Central Russia, claims that his new materials may contain electromagnetic impulses and could therefore become a source of virtually free electric energy. Sobolev says that his know-how may help to build new types of engineless flying machines evocative of flying saucers. He and his team have sent a letter informing Russian President Valdimir Putin of their "discoveries" - casually pointing out that commercialization of their know-how would require some US$2 million. The Russian scientists say they can build generators of free electric energy on a commercial basis within 18 months. However, established researchers remain skeptical. "They are yet to show us any concrete proof," said prominent physicist Sergei Kapitsa. The talk about new materials and sources of energy is either "an honest mistake or an intentional deception", he added.

Nikolay Brusentsov - the Creator of the Trinary Computer
According to Essays on history of Computer Science and Technology in Ukraine"
author Boris Malinovsky On June 21, 1941, the day before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of the USSR Nick Brusentsov was an eighth-form (equivalent to 10th grade in the USA) schoolboy living in Dnepropetrovsk. He participated in competitions of young musicians, conducting a chorus which sang his own composition about Dzerzhinsk metallurgy workers. Everything was remarkable. However, the next morning, together with the other children who had arrived from Dneprodzerzhinsk, he was urgently sent back home. He was already home when he heard Molotov's radio speech. The words "The Victory will be ours!" and Borodin's Bogatyrskaya symphony which followed were memorable for him. Thus ended Nikolai's childhood.

The Historical and Geographical Roots of Akademgorodok In Russian "gorodok" signifies a provincial town, and the capital city usually looks out at the provinces from on high. Akademgorodok, however, is a happy exception to this Russian tradition of the relationship between the center and a far away place. Leading visionaries, outstanding scholars willingly gave up their comfortable homes in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kiev for the small Siberian town yet to be built, in order to correct the historical and geographic injustice in the distribution of scientific power and resources. Russia is a huge country, the largest in the world by far, and science has existed in it only at several points. The visionaries took it upon themselves to build Akademgorodok-the Siberian city of science-according to a unique plan. Akademgorodok is 40 kilometers south of Novosibirsk, an industrial center on the Trans-Siberian railroad, with a modern airport nearby.
