41. Chief Sealth, Response To Washington V.1 1854
1887 newspaper article by Dr. henry A. smith including a biographical sketch of the Suquamish leader and a reported translation of his 1854 treaty speech.
http://courses.washington.edu/spcmu/speeches/chiefsealth.htm
H. A. Smith, "Early Reminiscences. Number Ten. Scraps From a Diary. Chief Seattle – A Gentleman by Instinct – His Native Eloquence. Etc., Etc." Seattle Sunday Star , October 29, 1887, p. 3. [UW Microforms Newspapers, Uncat. no. 212 reel 1.] Lacunae filled in from Frederic James Grant, History of Seattle, Washington; With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers , (NY: American Publishing and Engraving Co, Publishers, 1891): 433-436. [UW Special Collections Reference 979.743 G76]
Old Chief Seattle was the largest Indian I ever saw, and by far the noblest looking. He stood six feet full in his moccasins, was broad shouldered, deep chested and finely proportioned. His eyes were large, intelligent, expressive and friendly when in repose, and faithfully mirrored the varying moods of the great soul that looked through them. He was usually solemn, silent and dignified, but on great occasions moved among assembled multitudes like a Titan among, Lilliputians, and his lightest word was law.
When rising to speak in council or to tender advice, all eyes were turned upon him, and deep toned, sonorous and eloquent sentences rolled from his lips like the ceaseless thunders of cataracts flowing from exhaustless fountains, and his magnificent bearing was as noble as that of the most cultivated military chieftain in command of the forces of a continent. Neither his eloquence, his dignity or his grace, were acquired. They were as native to his manhood as leaves and blossoms are to a flowering almond.

42. MILES DAVIS
Reviews of the Bitches Brew box set, Wadada Leo smith and henry Kaiser's Yo! Miles,' and the tribute album Endless Miles.

MILES DAVIS "THE COMPLETE BITCHES BREW SESSIONS" SONY RECORDS "YO MILES!" SHANACHIE RECORDS VARIOUS ARTISTS "ENDLESS MILES: A TRIBUTE" ENCODED RECORDS
If there’s one area in the history of jazz that drives a wedge between fans, it’s a critical analysis of Miles Davis’ so-called "electric period," which, arguably raised it’s head with the 1969-70 recordings of the massive "Bitches Brew" project, coupled with his later merger into funk and rock rhythms. It’s an incredibly furtive period of the great trumpeter’s growth, and hopefully these releases will help remove some of the negatively about it. Miles’ own "Bitches Brew Sessions" is the fourth in Sony’s massive and impressive boxed set releases, and comes, as have all of those releases, in an incredible array of discography, photographs, recollections and essays. As Carlos Santana points out in his interesting introductory liner notes, this was a period of incredible searching by Miles, as he and producer Teo Macero started a journey into the incorporation of rock rhythms and attitude into his previously straight ahead jazz compositions. This collection does him proud, with over 140 pages of writings, information and listings about the music, as well as four perfect sounding discs, with a number of unreleased tracks. Truly, as all of the Miles releases, thus far, a revelation and inspiration worthy of the artist himself. The period after the "Brew" days creates even more argument among jazz (and Miles) fans, and has never been so well chronicled as with "Yo Miles," an absolutely stunning two disc set from, roughly, the days of "Jack Johnson," "Agartha," "Dark Magus," and other comparatively overlooked and/or dismissed Miles pieces from the early to mid Seventies.

Artist: KAISER AND WADADA LEO SMITH, HENRY Title: Yo Miles! - Sky Garden Label: CUNEIFORM Format: Price: Catalog #: CUNE 191 "Among the giants enthroned in jazz's pantheon, no one made as big, as broad, as bad-boy brazen of an impact on popular music in many manifestations jazz, rock and improvisation as Miles Davis. At the same time, he pioneered new routes for rock. The innovations Davis made in both jazz and rock spawned immediate followers in his time, and continue to infuse and energize the music of today. During the period c.1969-75, Davis also blazed new trails in improvisation. For Sky Garden , Yo Miles!'s 2nd recording and 1st release on Cuneiform, Kaiser and Smith have assembled an all-star cast culled from both the jazz and rock communities. The lineup here includes Smith on trumpet; Kaiser, Mike Keneally and Chris Muir on electric guitars; Michael Manring on bass; Steve Smith on drums; Karl Perazzo on percussion; Greg Osby (alto) and John Tchicai (tenor and soprano) on saxophones; and Tom Coster on percussion. It also features a number of special guests, including Zakir Hussain on tabla, Dave Creamer on guitar, and the ROVA Sax Quartet. The group's studio performance at The Site was recorded live, directly to a stereo DSD (Direct Stream Digital) recorder, in a manner comparable to how Davis recorded live to analogue tape. The result is a set of two hybrid SACDs (Super Audio CDs, a new technology for enhanced audio quality) playable in either an SACD player or on a standard CD player."

SMITH, HENRY (1904-1991). Henry (Buster) Smith, jazz qv qv who played in Benny Goodman's band. For an African-American in the 1930s, Buster Smith received incredible respect from all musicians. But by 1941 fame and touring were no longer his first priority. He returned to Dallas. Remaining active in the music scene, he wrote for jazz and blues bands, played often, and taught many young Texas musicians. Aaron (T-Bone) Walker qv was one example. By 1959 Atlantic Records had convinced Buster to record his first session in Fort Worth. Some of the songs from the session were "Kansas City Riffs," Buster's Tune," "E Flat Boogie," and "September Song." Though it was his first 33 rpm record, he could be found on 78 rpm records from the Blue Devils, Pete Johnson's Boogie-Woogie Boys, Eddie Durham, qv Snub Mosely, Bon and His Buddies, and the Don Redman Orchestra. An auto accident in the 1960s disabled him from ever playing saxophone again. He turned to bass guitar to keep current within the music business in Dallas, where his musical genius and influence was felt for years. Buster led a dance band until 1980. He died of a heart attack in Dallas on August 10, 1991. BIBLIOGRAPHY: John Chilton

Henry Smith
For his role in the Provisional Government during the early stages of the Texas Revolution, Henry Smith is remembered as the first American governor of Texas. He is also remembered as having married three times (all sisters to each other), and as the father of nine children. Smith was born in Kentucky on May 20, 1788, but spent most of his youth in Missouri. In Texas, he settled in Brazoria in 1827. There he farmed, surveyed lands, and held the office of Alcalde of Brazoria. He fought and was severely wounded at the Battle of Velasco in 1832. He became a member of the Convention of 1833 . At the Consultation in 1835 , Smith was chosen governor of the Provisional Government. He was an outspoken advocate of independence for Texas. Because of his uncompromising approach, however, his leadership was of limited effectiveness at a time when Texas unity was needed most. After Texas independence was won, Smith was appointed Secretary of Treasury in Sam Houston 's first cabinet. Later, in 1840-41, he served in the Fifth Congress of the Republic before retirement to his land near Brazoria. While in his sixties, Smith followed the "forty-niners" gold rush to California. Plans for a return to Texas, however, were interrupted by his death in a mining camp in Los Angeles County on March 4, 1851.
