Home About RRA RRA Activities Information Repository ... Constitution of 1824 . Smith had a part in preparing the organic law that served as the constitution of the provisional government In establishing the provisional government the Consultation made an attempt to satisfy all factions. A majority of the members of the General Council Convention of 1836 had no time to devote to such petty squabbles, and the governor was never called upon to answer the charges made against him. Smith was not a member of the Convention of 1836 and had no place in the ad interim government organized by that body. His political eclipse, however, was of short duration. His friends entered his name as a candidate for the presidency in the election of 1836 and, in spite of the fact that he asked that his name be withdrawn and announced his support of Gen. Sam Houston , he received some votes. He served as secretary of the treasury during the first Houston administration. He was, of course, unable either to balance the budget or to give value to the currency of the republic. His work, however, met with the approval of Houston and of Congress. In 1840 Smith was elected to Congress and served one term in the House of Representatives. He was made chairman of the committee on finance and is credited with introducing several measures of importance. After serving this term in Congress, Smith retired to his home with no intention of leaving it again. He sought no other public office and lived in retirement until 1849, when he succumbed to gold fever and set out for California. He reached California but found no gold. He died in a mining camp in Los Angeles County on March 4, 1851.

Home About RRA RRA Activities Information Repository ... Search SMITH, HENRY CLAY (1836-1912). Henry Clay (Hank) Smith, pioneer settler and rancher, was born Heinrich Schmitt, the eleventh child of Johann George and Margaret (Herrman) Schmitt, in Rossbrunn, Bavaria, on August 15, 1836. His father died when Henry was twelve, and in 1851 Henry and two older sisters immigrated to America. For a brief period he lived with an older sister in Peru, Ohio. He rejected opportunities for a formal education, served briefly as a sailor on Lake Erie, then turned westward and traveled down the Santa Fe Trail Blanco Canyon in northern Crosby County . The ranch had just been established when the original owner fled to escape his creditors. Smith, to whom the owner was heavily indebted, acquired the ranch in partial payment and was forced to move there because of the financial loss he had suffered. When the Smiths arrived at their new home, the Rock House, in November 1878, the family became the first permanent settlers in the county. Smith operated a store from his new home, ran cattle and sheep, and experimented with growing many different kinds of crops. He was an active participant in the organization of Crosby County in 1886 and served as its first tax collector and later as county commissioner. In 1910 Smith suffered a mild stroke. He died on May 19, 1912, and was buried in Emma Cemetery, near the center of Crosby County. Elizabeth Smith, who served as postmistress from 1879 to 1916 and whose hospitality to cowboys and travelers was legendary, died on June 5, 1925.

26. Talen Til Høvding Seattle
Teksten er basert p¥ dr. henry A. smith sin artikkel i Seattle Sunday Star 29. oktober 1887 og omsett av Torstein Sivertsen.
http://home.bip.net/torstein21/finkultur/seattle.html

His health failed in 1874 and he died in New York City on the 7th of February 1877. Of the old school of the - New England Theology, Smith was one of the foremost leaders of the new school Presbyterians. His theology is most strikingly contained in the Andover address, Relations of Faith and Philosophy, which was delivered before the Porter Rhetorical Society ~n. 1849. He always made it clear that the ideal philosophy was Christocentric: he said that Reformed theology must Christologize predestination and decrees, regeneration and sanctification, the doctrine of the Church, and the whole of the Eschatology.

37. Daniel Boone
Detailed biographical information of the man includes some images. henry Nash smith
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/HNS/Boone/smithhome.html
Henry Nash Smith, in his 1950 Virgin Land , sought to separate the "real" Daniel Boone from the myth that has been created. While interesting, Smith missed the point in focusing on the historical figure and not the reasons behind the various representations of Boone since John Filson's "autobiography" in 1784. This project will attempt to provide a cross-section of Boone portrayals, and attempt to place their points of view in historical context, based on the idea that a culture's myths and heroes explain who they are, and the true historical personages are less important than the image they become.
Daniel Boone: Empire Builder or Philosopher of Primitivism?
Smith's question fuels this inquiry: "Which was the real Boonethe standard-bearer of civilization and refinement, or the child of nature who fled into the wilderness before the advance of settlement?" (55). The truth is, both are the "real" Boone, as different writers with specific historic contexts constructed him. Civilizer Colonizer Natural Man The "Real" Daniel Boone ...
