Henry Smith attended Rugby public school from the age of 15 as a boarder. He was outstanding over a range of subjects and his ambition was a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford. This was made harder since his health was poor (a brother and sister had both died) and he was taken to Italy instead of completing his final year at Rugby. He undertook private reading while in Italy and was still able to win the scholarship. Smith became a fellow, then a tutor at Balliol. In 1860 he was appointed Savilian professor of geometry despite a strong field of applicants including George Boole While on the continent he had been learnt French, German and Italian and read widely. He had been most influenced by the work of Gauss . Smith said: If we except the great name of Newton and the exception is one that the great Gauss himself would have been delighted to make it is probable that no mathematician of any age or country has ever surpassed Gauss in the combination of an abundant fertility of invention with an absolute vigorousness in demonstration...

SMITH, HENRY (1904-1991). Henry (Buster) Smith, jazz qv qv who played in Benny Goodman's band. For an African-American in the 1930s, Buster Smith received incredible respect from all musicians. But by 1941 fame and touring were no longer his first priority. He returned to Dallas. Remaining active in the music scene, he wrote for jazz and blues bands, played often, and taught many young Texas musicians. Aaron (T-Bone) Walker qv was one example. By 1959 Atlantic Records had convinced Buster to record his first session in Fort Worth. Some of the songs from the session were "Kansas City Riffs," Buster's Tune," "E Flat Boogie," and "September Song." Though it was his first 33 rpm record, he could be found on 78 rpm records from the Blue Devils, Pete Johnson's Boogie-Woogie Boys, Eddie Durham, qv Snub Mosely, Bon and His Buddies, and the Don Redman Orchestra. An auto accident in the 1960s disabled him from ever playing saxophone again. He turned to bass guitar to keep current within the music business in Dallas, where his musical genius and influence was felt for years. Buster led a dance band until 1980. He died of a heart attack in Dallas on August 10, 1991. BIBLIOGRAPHY: John Chilton

SMITH, HENRY Henry Smith, known as the first American governor of Texas, tenth and last child of James and Magdalen (Woods) Smith, was born in Kentucky on May 20, 1788. He was married three times and was the father of nine children. The wives were sisters, Harriet, Elizabeth, and Sarah Gillett. Smith came to Texas in 1827 and settled in what is now Brazoria County. In addition to working his lands, he taught school for a while and later did some surveying. Almost from the day of his arrival in Texas he took an active part in public affairs. On occasion he moved beyond the sphere of politics, as in 1832 when he took part in the battle of Velasco qv and was severely wounded. There is evidence that at this early date he was thinking in terms of independence for Texas. In 1833 Smith was elected alcalde of the jurisdiction of Brazoria and a few months later was chosen a delegate to the Convention of 1833. qv In 1834 the governor of Coahuila and Texas qv appointed Smith political chief of the newly established department of the Brazos. His appointment to this position indicates that the Mexican officials considered him an outstanding citizen. As the country moved toward revolution, Smith became one of the leaders of the independence party. In the summer of 1835 he was chosen to serve on the Columbia committee of safety and correspondence and later in the same year was elected one of the delegates from his district to the Consultation. qv Smith urged an immediate declaration of independence and was keenly disappointed when that body decided instead to pledge its support to the Mexican federal Constitution of 1824.

Biography of henry smith Lane (18111881), early Republican, and commander of the 1st Regiment Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War. Covers their experience in some detail.
http://www.lane-mchs.org/lane.html
Montgomery County Historical Society
Henry Smith Lane (1811-1881)
On the morning of June 17, 1856, the first Republican national convention opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 11:15 the galleries of the Musical Fund Hall had filled with two thousand energetic participants. By 4:30, with the hall temperature exceeding one hundred degrees, attendance swelled further. At that hour a tall slim man in a blue jeans swallow tail suit ascended the speaker 's platform with a shaky limp. Immediately the audience noted his pale complexion peering through a graying beard. With a complete absence of front teeth and a cheek filled with chewing tobacco, several observers thought the man unfit to speak. Approximately one hour later, however, a fledgling party had been mesmerized by a dramatic address given in the spirit of Cicero. The classicist speaker was Henry Smith Lane, leader of the Indiana delegation. His presentation, the keynote address, secured the convention chairmanship for himself and guaranteed the Republican presidential nomination for the glamorous far western explorer John C. Fremont. Fremont did not prove an attractive candidate in the 1856 election, but Lane 's support of another political long shot four years later did assist in the nomination of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln. Henry S. Lane would then follow the President 's path to Washington as a United States Senator. The story behind Lane 's rise to prominence in the Republican party begins in 1842. Surprisingly, it was in that year he vowed to retire from politics forever. Lane had recently finished a term in the United States House of Representatives. He had proved himself an active and valued member of the Whig party, but lost all interest in politics after he had suffered a personal tragedy.
