One goal is to deal with noise in the sampling data, from the point of view of exponential probability estimates. Our quantitative estimates give some guide as to how much resampling is required to balance noise in the form of a variance. A measure of the richness of the data is key in this development. 2000 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
Workshop on Model Theoretic Algebra and Algebraic
Methods of Computation
4 - 14 September
Organisers:
Felipe Cucker (Hong Kong),
Pascal Koiran (Lyon),
Angus Macintyre (Edinburgh),
Christian Michaux (Mons)
Supported by:
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
The objective of the Workshop was to bring together several research groups concerned with definability in classical algebraic structures. There are three easily identified groups:
(i) applied model theorists; (iii) the Russian school of algorithmic geometry.
One motivation for holding the Workshop was that there had begun to be significant movement between the groups (e.g. interactions between Macintyre of group (i) with Koiran from group (ii), and with Grigoriev from group (iii)). The algorithmic issues, especially for group (ii), are inextricably linked with definability issues, where model theorists have long experience and a repertoire of techniques. The success of the meeting owed much to the fact that the main groups were strongly represented, and brought to Edinburgh ideas which were evolving even as the meeting was planned. The meeting resulted in progress in four particular areas: Geometry In the setting of complex algebraic geometry Chistov explained some basic new algorithms for smooth stratification.

Stephen Smale
Stephen Smale (born July 15 ) is an American mathematician and winner of the Fields Medal in 1966. He made his reputation by a proof of the Poincare conjecture for all dimensions greater than 4. He then turned to the study of dynamical systems , where he made significant advances as well as outlining a research program carried out by many others. Smale is also known for work in mathematical economics, as well as recent explorations of various theories of computation. In 1998 he constructed a list of 18 problems in mathematics to be solved in the 21st century. This list was compiled in the spirit of Hilbert 's famous list of problems produced in 1900. In fact, Smale's list includes some of the original Hilbert problems. Smale's problems include the Jacobian conjecture and the Riemann hypothesis , both of which are still unsolved. Stephen Smale is also famous for the proof of sphere eversion . That is, turning a sphere inside out without creating any crease.

Colloquium Announcement
Speaker: Iosif Pinelis
Michigan Tech Title: Evolution of language: following Stephen Smale Date: Monday, April 22, 2002 Time: 1:05 pm Location: Abstract:
It is shown that the result presented by Stephen Smale in his talk given
recently to this department holds if the quadratic distance between
languages is replaced by a certain information distance. Also, it is
argued in favor of the latter distance. The talk is rather elementary
and accessible even for undergraduate students.

Shannon sampling, learning theory, and
reconstruction functions from point values
Date and Time:
4:00 - 5:00pm, Monday, March 1, 2004 Room: TUR L011 OPENING REMARKS by Neil Sullivan Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Refreshments: after the lecture, in Little 339 Abstract: Shannon sampling is a special case of the general problem of reconstruction of a function from its values at a discrete set of points. This talk will deal with age-old algorithms for solving this problem and new estimates for their error and efficiancy. Professor Stephen Smale, one of the world's most eminent mathematicians, has made pioneering contributions to both pure and applied mathematics. For his pathbreaking work in topology and dynamical systems he was awarded the Fields Medal in 1966. In the late sixties he moved into applications - modelling physical processes of dynamical systems, the n -body problem and electric circuit theory, computation questions involving algorithms, among others. For his lifelong contributions he received the National Medal of Science in 1996. He has been professor of mathematics at Berkeley since 1964. He retired from Berkeley in 1995 and was professor at the City University of Hong Hong until his recent move to the Toyota Technical Institute, Chicago.
