Significant Scots
Robert Simson SIMSON, (DR) ROBERT, a mathematician, was the eldest son of Mr John Simson of Kirton-hall, in Ayrshire, and was born on the 14th October, 1687. He was educated at the university of Glasgow, which he first entered as a student in 1701. Being intended for the church, his studies were at first directed chiefly to theological learning, in which, as well as in the classics, he made great progress. He distinguished himself also by his historical knowledge, and was accounted one of the best botanists of his years. At this time no mathematical lectures were given in the college; but, having amused himself in his leisure hours by a few exercises in Euclid, a copy of which he found in the hands of a companion, he quickly found that the bent of his taste and genius lay in that direction. The farther he advanced in the study of account, in a letter, dated London, 17th November, 1710, that he expected to have an assistant in his studies, chosen by Mr Caswell; but, from some mistake, it was omitted, and Mr Simson himself applied to Mr Ditton. "He went to him, not as a scholar (his own words); but to have general information and advice about his mathematical studies." Mr Caswell afterwards mentioned to Mr Simson, that he meant to have procured Mr Jones’s assistance, if he had not been engaged.

Dimostrazione.

As a student of theology he was required to produce written work for his teachers. This he found unsatisfying, since he felt the arguments to be inconclusive and speculative. For recreation he turned first to a book on oriental philology, where he found statements that could be shown to be true or false, but this was not wholly satisfying and at that stage he had recourse to mathematics and Euclid 's Elements. He then set to work to study mathematics seriously, but he had to do this on his own, since at that time, for some reason, there were no lectures given on the subject by the professor Robert Sinclair. During his first year as a student in Glasgow Robert Simson was involved in a rather interesting incident which shows that, even before the Union of the Parliaments, Scottish as well as English students celebrated the 5th of November with fireworks. On emerging from a close that night Robert was hurt in the face by shot from a pistol belonging to a fellow student Arthur Tran, who with a group of other students was firing a pistol and letting off squibs. They were hauled before the Faculty where Tran agreed that he had fired the pistol, and that he had said

http://www.robertburns.plus.com/mouse.htm
Critical Analysis
To a Mouse

This poem was included in the Kilmarnock Volume. Burns first book of poems. The verse stanza used is the Standard Habbie from the 17th century poem Habbie Simson the Piper of Kilbarchan by Robert Sempill. Burns had a knowledge of traditional verse forms but used the Standard Habbie so extensively that it has become known as the Burns Stanza To A Mouse On turning her up in her nest with the plough, Nov 1785 " is a friendly address. In this poem Burns identifies the animal with the human world, although the poem is essentially about himself.
Listen to a verse
The mouse is interesting to him because its plight reminds him of his own. The comparison, however, is neither forced nor sentimental, and the gap between the world of mice and men is bridged by friendly compassion. The poem has charm and vigour, as well as technical skill. It is true that the Burns family suffered from oppression and poverty and it is often suggested that this is the context behind the poem. This is only partly true. The lines do depict a single man and a single mood but that mood is placed before us in such a way as to exclude such irrelevant particulars as the specific cause of Burns grief and fears in November 1785. These griefs and fears are common to all men and women at all periods of human history. It is the most individual yet at the same time the most universal expression of loss and destruction, of personal insecurity and anxiety, that Burns was able to attain.

SIMSON, Robert. Volume of holograph letters on mathematical topics between Robert Simson.and Matthew Stewart. [1741-1755] MS Gen 146 After graduating at Glasgow University in 1711, Robert Simson spent a year in London where he met several eminent mathematicians, amongst them Edward Halley. It was the latter's influence that tended to confirm Simson's interest in the writings of the Greek mathematicians. In 1712 Simson returned to Glasgow as Professor of Mathematics. The rest of his life was spent in teaching and in research on the early Greek mathematicians - he published important works on Euclid, Pappus of Alexandria and Apollonius of Perga. This correspondence between Simson and Matthew Stewart (Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh) was published in The proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society , vol. XXI, session 1902-1903.
