In the formalist view, it is the investigation of axiomatically defined abstract structures using logic and mathematical notation; other views are described in Philosophy of mathematics. Mathematics might be seen as a simple extension of spoken and written languages, with an extremely precisely defined vocabulary and grammar, for the purpose of describing and exploring physical and conceptual relationships.

Mathematician. Born in West Kilbride (North Ayrshire), Simson was educated at the University of Glasgow. In 1711, he was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics in that same institution and worked in the field of geometry. Simson enjoyed the company of his serious-minded male friends; playing whist on Friday evenings, walking to Anderston every Saturday and hosting dinner parties. He retired from his chair having held it for fifty years in 1761. He died in Glasgow and left his large collection of books and papers to the University. His name is remembered in Simson's Line , a mathematical concept encountered by William Wallace (1768 - 1843). If you have found this information useful please consider

Robert Rankin 's father, the Rev Oliver Shaw Rankin, was the parish minister of Sorbie, Wigtownshire at the time of Robert's birth. The Rev Oliver Rankin became Professor of Old Testament Language, Literature and Theology in the University of Edinburgh in 1937. Robert was named after his grandfather, Robert Rankin, who was Minister of Lamington, Lanarkshire. Robert attended Garlieston School and from there went to Fettes College, an independent school in Edinburgh. He obtained a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge, which he entered in 1934. There he was particularly influenced by Littlewood and Ingham whose lectures he attended while taking Part III of the Mathematical Tripos. Rankin graduated in 1937 and in the same year his father became Professor of Old Testament Language, Literature and Theology at the University of Edinburgh. At Cambridge Rankin began to undertake research in number theory under Ingham 's supervision. Dalyell recalls in [2] that

Robert Simson SIMSON, (DR) ROBERT, a mathematician, was the eldest son of Mr John Simson of Kirton-hall, in Ayrshire, and was born on the 14th October, 1687. He was educated at the university of Glasgow, which he first entered as a student in 1701. Being intended for the church, his studies were at first directed chiefly to theological learning, in which, as well as in the classics, he made great progress. He distinguished himself also by his historical knowledge, and was accounted one of the best botanists of his years. At this time no mathematical lectures were given in the college; but, having amused himself in his leisure hours by a few exercises in Euclid, a copy of which he found in the hands of a companion, he quickly found that the bent of his taste and genius lay in that direction. The farther he advanced in the study of account, in a letter, dated London, 17th November, 1710, that he expected to have an assistant in his studies, chosen by Mr Caswell; but, from some mistake, it was omitted, and Mr Simson himself applied to Mr Ditton. "He went to him, not as a scholar (his own words); but to have general information and advice about his mathematical studies." Mr Caswell afterwards mentioned to Mr Simson, that he meant to have procured Mr Jones’s assistance, if he had not been engaged.

First edition of this posthumous edition of the unpublished works of Robert Simson (1687-1768), Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University. Professor James Clow, the successor of Adam Smith in the Chair of Logic at Glasgow, writes the forward to this book; he was a man of great ability, having been chosen, quite possibly on the recommendation of Adam Smith, to edit these highly important works of Simson. The book was printed at the cost of Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-1786) of Chevening, Kent, the mathematician, who was a friend of both Simson and Adam Smith, and was in correspondence with Adam Smith at the time the editor was being chosen. Adam Smith had a copy of this book in his Library.
