Work on industrial quality
Following a brief spell as an academic, in Shewhart joined the Western Electric Company , a manufacturer of telephony hardware for the Bell Telephone Company. Bell Telephone’s engineers had been working to improve the reliability of their transmission systems. Because amplifiers and other equipment had to be buried underground, there was a business need to reduce the frequency of failures and repairs. Bell Telephone had already realised the importance of reducing variation in a manufacturing process. Moreover, they had realised that continual process-adjustment in reaction to non-conformance actually increased variation and degraded quality. In , Shewhart framed the problem in terms of assignable-cause and chance-cause variation and introduced the control chart as a tool for distinguishing between the two. Shewhart stressed that bringing a production process into a state of statistical control, where there is only chance-cause variation, and keeping it in control, is necessary to predict future output and to manage a process economically. Shewhart worked to advance the thinking at

Walter A. Shewhart
Father of statistical quality control T Shewhart was concerned that statistical theory serve the needs of industry. He exhibited the restlessness of one looking for a better way. A man of science who patiently developed and tested his ideas and the ideas of others, he was an astute observer of developments in the world of science and technology. While the literature of the day discussed the stochastic nature of both biological and technical systems, and spoke of the possibility of applying statistical methodology to these systems, Shewhart actually showed how it was to be done; in that respect, the field of quality control can claim a genuine pioneer in Shewhart. His monumental work, Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product

The Shewhart Medal is presented to the individual who
has been deemed by the committee to have made the
most outstanding contribution to the science and techniques of quality control or who has demonstrated leadership in the field of modern quality control. The Shewhart Medal for 2002 is awarded to William H. Woodall "For the advancement of the science of quality control including the development of new methodology for statistical process monitoring and control, and for effective dissemination and implementation of these techniques through excellence in university teaching, extensive publications, presentations at scientific meetings, and personal consulting activities in different industrial environments."
Woodall Acceptance Speech: From your past experience with college professors, you know that it is a rare event for one to speak for only five minutes, on any subject. I will limit myself, however.

Biography of Walter A Shewhart
Shewhart was born in New Canton, Illinois, USA on 18th March 1891. His schooling in physics at the Universities of Illinois and California led him to his doctorate and a brief spell as an academic. In 1918, Shewhart joined the Western Electric Company, a manufacturer of telephony hardware for Bell Telephone. Bell Telephone’s engineers had been working to improve the reliability of their transmission systems. Because amplifiers and other equipment had to be buried underground, there was a business need to reduce the frequency of failures and repairs. Bell Telephone had already realised the importance of reducing variation in a manufacturing process, the basis of all lean production. Moreover, they had realised that continual process-adjustment in reaction to non-conformance actually increased variation and degraded quality. In 1924, Shewhart framed the problem in terms of "assignable-cause" and "chance-cause" variation and introduced the "control chart" as a tool for distinguishing between the two. Shewhart stressed that bringing a production process into a state of "statistical control", where there is only chance-cause variation, and keeping it in control, is necessary to predict future output and to manage a process economically. Shewhart worked to advance the thinking at Bell Telephone Laboratories from their foundation in 1925 until his retirement in 1956, publishing a series of papers in the Bell System Technical Journal During the 1930s, Shewhart’s work led him to fundamental scientific and philosophical issues, particularly those concerned with

His Ideas The original notions of Total Quality Management and continuous improvement trace back to a former Bell Telephone employee named Walter Shewhart. One of W. Edwards Deming's teachers, he preached the importance of adapting management processes to create profitable situations for both businesses and consumers, promoting the utilization of his own creation the SPC control chart. Dr. Shewhart believed that lack of information greatly hampered the efforts of control and management processes in a production environment. In order to aid a manager in making scientific, efficient, economical decisions, he developed Statistical Process Control methods. Many of the modern ideas regarding quality owe their inspirtation to Dr. Shewhart. He also developed the Shewhart Cycle Learning and Improvement cycle, combining both creative management thinking with statistical analysis. This cycle contains four continuous steps: Plan, Do, Study and Act. These steps (commonly refered to as the PDSA cycle), Shewhart believed, ultimately lead to total quality improvement. The cycle draws its structure from the notion that constant evaluation of management practices as well as the willingness of management to adopt and disregard unsupported ideas are keys to the evolution of a successful enterprise.

Background Information
Dr. Walter A. Shewhart Dr. W. Edwards Deming We owe a great deal to Dr. Walter A. Shewhart (1891 - 1967) for his development of the control chart and the concept of statistical control. Dr. Shewhart recognized in the 1920’s, while working at Bell Telephone Laboratories, that there are different types of variation in data. He developed a strategy of dividing data into the two categories of system and local sources of variation. Further, and more importantly, these two categories of data must be responded to in different ways. But to do this, a method had to be developed to identify when the variation was from the system ( noise ) and when it was from local ( signal ) sources. The method he developed is called the control chart. At Bell Labs in the 1920’s, and in many industries for eight decades, control charts have proven a very effective way to improve product quality and manufacturing processes by enabling proper responses to the type of variation. Many individuals have promoted the science of control charts developed by Dr. Shewhart’s original work. The most widely known was
