Interview with Jean-Pierre Serre during the Abel Prize Celebrations Oslo June 2, 2003 Interviewers: Martin Raussen Aalborg University Denmark Christian Skau , Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim Topology First of all, we would like to congratulate you on winning the first Abel Prize. You started your career with a thesis which was centered in algebraic topology. At that time this was - at least in France - a very new discipline and not one of the major areas. What made you choose this topic? I was participating in the Cartan Seminar, on Algebraic Topology. But Cartan did not suggest research topics to his students: they had to find one themselves; after that he would help them. This is what happened to me. I found that Leray's theory (about fibre spaces and their spectral sequence) could be applied to many more situations than was thought possible, and that such an extension could be used to compute homotopy groups. I think it is fair to say that the methods and results that you created in your thesis revolutionized homotopy theory and shaped it in its modern look.

It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Jean-Pierre Serre, titulaire de la Chaire d'Algèbre et géométrie, de 1956 à 1994, est le premier mathématicien à recevoir le prix. Professeur honoraire au Collège de France à Paris, Jean-Pierre Serre, souligne l'institution norvégienne, "a largement contribué au progrès des mathématiques durant plus d'un demi-siècle" et, ajoute-t-elle, "il continue dans cette voie". This classic book contains an introduction to systems of /-adic representations, a topic of great importance in number theory and algebraic geometry, as reflected by the spectacular recent developments on the Taniyama-Weil conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem. The initial chapters are devoted to the Abelian case (complex multiplication), where one finds a nice correspondence between the/-adic representations and the linear representations of some algebraic groups (now called Taniyama groups). The last chapter handles the case of elliptic curves with no complex multiplication, the main result of which is that the image of the Galois group (in the corresponding /-adic representation) is large.This work reproduces a series of lectures held at McGill University in 1967. It presents the idele-theoretic approach to Abelian representations, particularly those that arise from the modules of ln-th division points of elliptic curves.
