This classic book contains an introduction to systems of /-adic representations, a topic of great importance in number theory and algebraic geometry, as reflected by the spectacular recent developments on the Taniyama-Weil conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem. The initial chapters are devoted to the Abelian case (complex multiplication), where one finds a nice correspondence between the/-adic representations and the linear representations of some algebraic groups (now called Taniyama groups). The last chapter handles the case of elliptic curves with no complex multiplication, the main result of which is that the image of the Galois group (in the corresponding /-adic representation) is large.This work reproduces a series of lectures held at McGill University in 1967. It presents the idele-theoretic approach to Abelian representations, particularly those that arise from the modules of ln-th division points of elliptic curves. An Interview With Jean-Pierre Serre By C.T. Chong and Y.K. Leong National University of Singapore Note This article was first published in the June 1985 Issue of Mathematical Medley, a publication of the Singapore Mathematical Society. Jean-Pierre Serre was born in 1926 in France. He studied mathematics at the Ecole Normale Superieure. In 1954, at the age of 28, he was awarded a Fields Medal by the International Mathematical Union, the highest recognition for achievement in mathematics. Two years later he was appointed Professor of Algebra and Geometry at the College de France, where for about 15 years he was the youngest professor. He visited the Department of Mathematics, National University of Singapore, from 2 to 15 February 1985. His visit was sponsored by the French-Singapore Academic Exchange Programme. While in Singapore, Professor Serre delivered two lectures on algebraic curves over finite fields and one lecture on the Ramanujan function. He also gave a two-hour seminar talk on Faltings' proof of the Mordell conjecture, and a Colloquium lecture entitled "Discriminant = b - 4ac" on class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields. On February 14, 1985, he gave an interview in which he discussed various aspects of his mathematical career and his views of mathematics. What follows is a transcript of this interview, edited by C.T. Chong and Y.K. Leong, and revised by J-P. Serre.

(Redirected from Serre Jean-Pierre Serre (born September 15 ) is one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century , active in algebraic geometry number theory and topology He was educated at the Lycée de Nimes and then from to at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris . Serre was awarded his doctorate from the Sorbonne in . From to he held positions at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris . He is a member of the Collège de France From very young he was an outstanding figure in the school of Henri Cartan , working on algebraic topology several complex variables and then commutative algebra and algebraic geometry ; in a context of sheaf theory and homological algebra techniques. In his speech at the Fields Medal award ceremony in Hermann Weyl praised Serre in apparently extravagant terms; and also made the point that the award was for the first time awarded to an algebraist. While Serre subsequently moved field - at this point he apparently thought that homotopy theory where he had started was already over-technical - Weyl's perception that the central place of classical analysis had been challenged by abstract algebra has subsequently been justified, as has his assessment of Serre's place in this change.

Poichè la proposta era caduta nel nulla, nel 1936 l'Unione Mondiale dei Matematici istituí la medaglia Fields, da assegnare ai congressi quadriennali ai migliori matematici " under " quaranta, e considerata finora l'equivalente di un premio Nobel (senza portafoglio, però). Science By flo Tue Apr 8th, 2003 at 03:14:48 AM EST The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the first ever Abel Prize to Jean-Pierre Serre of the Collège de France, Paris, "for playing a key role in shaping the modern form of many parts of mathematics, including topology, algebraic geometry and number theory." The prize is named after the brilliant Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829). A memorial fund was established in his name in 2002, and one of its purposes is to award a prize for outstanding work in the field of mathematics. The prize is worth NOK 6 million (about USD 800,000). A Nobel Prize for Mathematics? As is well known, the Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Physiology, Literature, and Peace. (Since 1968, the "Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel" is also awarded, but this should not be confused with a real Nobel Prize). But there is no Nobel Prize in Mathematics. The predominant theory for this omission is that Alfred Nobel did not want the Swedish mathematician
