Serre's early work was to apply spectral sequences to the study of the relations between the homology groups of fibre, total space and base space in a fibration. This enabled him to discover fundamental connections between the homology groups and homotopy groups of a space and to prove important results on the homotopy groups of spheres. Serre's work led to topologists realising the importance of spectral sequences. The Serre spectral sequence provided a tool to work effectively with the homology of fibrings. For this work on spectral sequences and his work developing complex variable theory in terms of sheaves, Serre was awarded a Fields Medal in 1954. Serre's theorem led to rapid progress not only in homotopy theory but in algebraic topology and homological algebra in general. Over many years, Serre has published many highly influential texts covering a wide range of mathematics. These books are outstanding and led to Serre being honoured in 1995 with the Steele Prize for mathematical exposition. Serre has received numerous awards besides the ones we have already mentioned. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was also elected to the academies of France, Sweden, United States and the Netherlands. He was awarded the Prix Gaston Julia in 1970 and the Balzan Prize in 1985, He has been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Cambridge in 1978, the University of Stockholm in 1980, and the University of Glasgow in 1983.

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Jean-Pierre Serre (born September 15 ) is one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century , active in algebraic geometry number theory and topology He was educated at the Lycée de Nimes and then from to at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris . Serre was awarded his doctorate from the Sorbonne in . From to he held positions at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris . He is a member of the Collège de France From very young he was an outstanding figure in the school of Henri Cartan , working on algebraic topology several complex variables and then commutative algebra and algebraic geometry ; in a context of sheaf theory and homological algebra techniques. In his speech at the Fields Medal award ceremony in Hermann Weyl praised Serre in apparently extravagant terms; and also made the point that the award was for the first time awarded to an algebraist. While Serre subsequently moved field - at this point he apparently thought that homotopy theory where he had started was already over-technical - Weyl's perception that the central place of classical analysis had been challenged by abstract algebra has subsequently been justified, as has his assessment of Serre's place in this change.

Roles
Mathematicians not only study, but also research, and this must be given prominent mention here, because a misconception that everything in mathematics is already known is widespread among persons not learned in that field. In fact, the publication of new discoveries in mathematics continues at an immense rate in hundreds of scientific journals, many of them devoted to mathematics and many devoted to subjects to which mathematics is applied (such as theoretical computer science, physics or quantum mechanics).

Serre's multiplicity conjectures
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition In mathematics Mathematics is commonly defined as the study of patterns of structure, change, and space; more informally, one might say it is the study of 'figures and numbers'. In the formalist view, it is the investigation of axiomatically defined abstract structures using logic and mathematical notation; other views are described in Philosophy of mathematics. Mathematics might be seen as a simple extension of spoken and written languages, with an extremely precisely defined vocabulary and grammar, for the purpose of describing and exploring physical and conceptual relationships.

Serre's multiplicity conjectures are certain purely algebraic problems, in commutative algebra In abstract algebra, commutative algebra is the field of study of commutative rings, their ideals, modules and algebras. It is foundational both for algebraic geometry and for algebraic number theory. The most prominent example for commutative rings are polynomial rings.
