Name: Serenus Hua
Age: 15
Instrument: Violin
Hometown: Lincroft, NJ

15-year-old Serenus Hua is not only a talented violinist, but also an extraordinary community leader with a wealth of unique experience. "As far back as I can remember, serving the community with music has always been a big part of my life," says Serenus. "I had my first performance in a nursing home at the age of three and haven't stopped since then!"
Serenus' love of music and community service inspired him to found a student volunteer group called "Music in Action" comprised of young musicians. The group performs at local senior citizen homes and daycare centers as well as at school events. Serenus is the person who reaches out to the community organizations to arrange these performances and promote the events. He also coaches the group practice and picks the music they play, often transposing or rearranging popular tunes into chamber music parts. "I think the most difficult part is producing a program of music that will interest a specific group of people," says Serenus.
Serenus also volunteers for the American Cancer Society. He's designed a website for his local chapter, helped to run benefit concerts, and also performed as a soloist in a benefit concert that raised $10,000 for the organization.

    Alexander Akimetes, Abbot (AC)
    Died 430; feast day formerly on January 15. The story of Alexander is that of a Greek army officer who, moved by Christ's words to the rich young ruler, sold his possessions and became a monk. But he was too energetic for a solitary life. After seven years, in a fit of enthusiasm he left his retreat and set fire to a pagan temple. For this he was imprisoned, but, like Saint Paul, succeeded in converting the governor, who was baptized with all his household. Securing his freedom, Alexander returned to the desert and fell in with a band of robbers. The result was remarkable, for under his influence they also accepted the Christian faith, and when their leader died, Alexander turned them into a band of monks and their robber's den into a monastery. Appointing one of them as abbot, he went on his way, this time to Mesopotamia, where he established a monastery on the Euphrates. Alexander was a somewhat restless archimandrite, fond of new places and faces. So, he formed a travelling monastery. With 150 monks he journeyed from place to place, until his followers numbered 300. These he divided into six choirs, to sing in turn the divine office and thus maintain, day and night, unceasing praise, and hence came their name of the Sleepless Ones ( akoimetoi ). One of these houses he established at Constantinople (Benedictines, Gill).

    THE MARGARET GASCOIGNE/BRIDGET MORE FRAGMENT (G)
    ST MARY'S ABBEY, COLWICH, H18, FOLIOS 155-161.
    Birgitta of Sweden, Revelationes D ame Margaret Gascoigne, O.S.B., an exiled English Benedictine nun at Cambrai in Flanders, died there in 1637, hers being the first grave within the shadow of their monastic house.(1) Before that date she had compiled a contemplative anthology of her devotions. In its Chapter Forty-Two, she had copied out a fragment from a medieval Julian exemplar likely present at Cambrai, and commented upon its text. She misreads, or only partially reads, the text, believing that Julian dies, rather than lives, following her death-bed vision of 1373. Nevertheless she responds appropriately to her reading, taking Julian's experiencing of God's presence into her own intense life of monastic prayer. In so doing she is part of a Benedictine continuity of contemplation, a continuity that transcends time and gender, caring only that the soul be oned with God in eternity that equally included women with men, to be attained in a community where all are vowed to conversion from worldliness, to stability and to obedience. Dame Margaret Gascoigne's book of devotions would likely have been found in her cell at her death and was treasured by her Benedictine Sisters who particularly made copies of it when the Cambrai daughter house was founded at Paris. The copy that survives, called by Placid Spearitt, O.S.B., 'Gascoigne B', was most carefully made by Dame Bridget More, O.S.B., descendant of Thomas More, sister of the foundress of the Cambrai Our Lady of Consolation

    SAMMONICUS SERENUS
    SERENUS, SAMMONICUS , Roman savant, author of a didactic medical poem, De medicina praecepta (probably incomplete). The work (1115 hexameters) contains a number of popular remedies, borrowed from Pliny and Dioscorides, and various magic formulae, amongst others the famous Abracadabra (q.v.), as a cure for fever and ague. It concludes with a description of the famous antidote of Mithradates VI. of Pontus. It was much used in the middle ages, but is of little value except for the ancient history of popular medicine. The syntax and metre are remarkably correct. It is uncertain whether the author was the famous physician and polymath, who was put to death in A.D. 212 at a banquet to which he had been invited by Caracalla, or his son, the tutor of the younger Gordian. The father, who was one of the most learned men of his age, wrote upon a variety of subjects, and possessed a library of 60,000 volumes, bequeathed to his son and handed on by the latter to Gordian. The editio princeps (ed. Sulpitius Verulanus, before 1484) is very rare; later ed. by J. G. Ackermann (Leipzig, 1786) and E. Bhrens, Poetae Latini minores, iii.; see also A. It seems to me that Mann uses a hundred words when ten would do just as well or better. I found Serenus to be very annoying. He followed Adrian around like a puppy, even taking theology classes just because Adrian was. Serenus seemed too good to be true. Adrian often ignored Serenus for his other friends, Rudolf Schwerdtfeger and Schildknapp. Adrian admitted himself that he was cold and incapable of close connections. Why did Serenus persist in his friendship? Jane

    Rev Hugh Paulinus Serenus Cressy1605 Rev Hugh Paulinus Serenus Cressy B.A. M.A. D.D. was a son of Sir Hugh, born in 1605 at Thorp Salvin in Yorkshire, England. At 14 he went to Oxford College where he graduated, B.A. In 1623. In 1625 he was elected a probationer of Merton College and in 1626 was made a true and perpetual fellow of that society. Whilst at Oxford, Cressey was known to be a quick and accurate disputant, a man of good manners, nature and refined ness of soul. After having commenced M.A. in 1629 and taken holy orders he officiated as Chaplain to Sir Thomas Lord Wentworth while that nobleman was president of the council of York, and later Lord Deputy of Ireland and Earl of Strafford. In 1635 he was installed in Christ Church, Dublin, Ireland. He returned to England in 1642 and was awarded a canonry in the collegiate church of Windsor, which he received in 1642, this he was never able to enjoy, owing to the disturbed state of the country. The following year (1643) his patron, Lord Falkland, was killed at Newbury. He wrote, 'Church History of Brittany or England, from the Beginning of Christianity to the Norman Conquest'. 'From the Conquest Downwards', was discovered at Douai in 1856. His other works are: Appendix to 'Exomologesis' (Paris, 1647);

    Serenus (4), solitary in the Nitrian desert, who, when visited by Cassian, A.D. 395, discussed de Animae Mobilitate et Spiritalibus Nequitiis (Coll. vii.), and de Principatibus seu Potestatibus (Coll. viii. See Migne, Patr. Lat. t. xlix. 667 seq. ). In the former he treats mostly of the nature of the soul, the rapid movement of the thoughts, the influence of evil spirits upon them, and the duty of fixing the desire on God. In the latter he declares the nature of evil spirits, their fall, subordination, and occupation. His Life, without details, is in Vitae Patrum, c. 50. Migne, Patr. Lat. t. lxxiii. 844 seq.; Ceill. Aut. sacr. viii. 170 seq.; Fleury, H. E. xx. c. 7. J.G. Serenus (5), 10th bp. of Marseilles c. 595-600, known from the letters of Gregory the Great. To his good offices were commended St. Augustine on his mission to England in 596 (Greg. Magn. Ep. vi. 52; Migne, Patr. Lat. lxxvii. 836), and, three years later, the monks dispatched to help him (xi. 58, Patr. Lat. 1176). Two other letters from Gregory are preserved. Serenus in an excess of iconoclastic zeal had entered the churches of Marseilles and broken and cast forth the images. Gregory, commending his fervour against idolatry, reproved his violence, since the use of representations in a church was that the unlearned might read on the walls what they were unable to read in the Scriptures (ix. 105
