Kaos Jazz and Blues Bistro When asked why he chose right now to release the nine tracks that were recorded in March of 1991, Semple doesn't even draw a breath before deadpanning, "Demand, just unceasing demand for this recording. It was originally recorded as a cassette, but those lose their high end after a couple of years, and also people step on them. But with the CD, there's even an added bonus track. See, see what I'm getting at? The people who've already bought it, hey, they might buy it again!" And it might just be an album worth stepping on and buying again, what with a couple of decent Semple-penned originals snuggled in between standards like "Domino," "Midnight Hour" and "Rainy Night in Georgia." "It's true, they're all time-honored classics, suitable for framing. These songs look great under your Christmas tree," he chortles. "The album is really just what the band does when we play. We did the exact same thing last night, only it's seven years later, so you can imagine how we've evolved! Now it's total madness; before it's just good clean fun. I live for fun; you can put that in the interview." As a kid growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Semple found that fun in the unlikely influences of flamenco and classical music, which he studied formally, and which have impacted his sound.

Monday, August 28 to Sunday, September 3 Parents drink like fish. One thousand guys pick up a guitar for every chick who slings a Strat. If you want to become a Japanese subway pusher, you can apprentice with local expert Maurice Ginzer. "I remember the first time Jack did (Guitarmania) – he was on last," says Ginzer. "I was like a Japanese subway pusher trying to keep people in the club and listen to the guy. I said, ‘Look, if you just stay for one tune, I guarantee you’re gonna be here ’til one o’clock.’ They said, ‘Yeah, wanna bet a drink on it?’ I must have bet 50 people and won. They’re like, ‘Thank God you didn’t let us go – this guy’s phenomenal!’" "Jack starts up, and (Charon) just got up with his glass of wine and he said, ‘Maurice, the food’s great, but the music’s better – I’m going inside.’ He stood until the end of the show for three hours and watched him. The second night he got up and jammed with Jack and his road manager came up and said, ‘You know, he turned down jamming with B.B. King, he turned down jamming with Pat Metheny. He really loves this guy.’" "Let’s be frank, women and guitars – there’s not very many of them. For ever woman that picks up a guitar there’s a 1,000 guys."

Jack Semple
Back With More Emotional Truth
- by Nova Herman for The Session As people come and go in the quaint setting of a Regina coffee house, Jack Semple greets each of them by name in between telling me about his latest CD ventures. It's one of the reasons Jack likes it here. It's that comfortable place where everybody knows your name. "I have everything I need here...I couldn't afford this lifestyle if I lived in Toronto, that's for sure." Jack discovered music at the age of seven when he saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and his older brothers taught him some chords. At that time, he says, there was no Saskatchewan music scene. "There was no place for a band to play to an audience. There were bands, I guess, but they played church basements and garages. There were no venues like there are now to play." In Jack's travels, he's come across many perceptions of Saskatchewan people and their music. The biggest myth is that outsiders believe all Saskatchewan artists write about is wheat, or at least their geography. Jack believes they simply view flatlanders as good musicians. "One thing about Saskatchewan, which other people from across Canada will tell you, is that there is a really high concentration of excellent guitar players here for some reason."

The United States Golf Association:
The Present State of Handicapping
The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association recently completed its centennial celebration, and is only five years younger than the USGA, founded in 1894. Both the national governing body and the WPGA share a commitment to work solely "for the good of the game." The qualifying round relationship dates back to 1927, and the WPGA's current USGA qualifying duties include the Open, Senior Open, Amateur, Senior Amateur, Junior, Public Links, and Mid-Amateur. More than 450 contestants in the area each year. The Open Sectional, which we now alternate with the Northern Ohio Golf Association, returned to Western Pennsylvania in 1998, after an absence of nearly 25 years. This took place due to the Association's request for alternating and the USGA's respect for how the WPGA conducts competitions. Since the WPGA's missions are similar to the USGA, it is often assumed that association like ours are part of the USGA. This is not the case, as the WPGA operates independently. We are tied to the USGA through the common commitment to the game of golf. The WPGA does much to insure golf's future. Programs for junior golf, club information programs, workshops, seminars and the WPGA Scholarship Fund are among the worthwhile activities that have opened the game and business of golf to a wider portion of the golf community. The USGA Handicap System enables golfers of every level to compete fairly with each other. This level playing field is one of golf's popular attractions. Organizations like the WPGA have contributed greatly to equitable handicapping in Western Pennsylvania. Area officials such as Bud Semple, Jack Mahaffey, Joseph Oliver, Al Luppino, John McMurdy, Carol Semple Thompson (who chaired the USGA Handicap Committee) and Richard Falchetti have been key handicap leaders in the area. The WPGA has accepted the duty of insuring the handicap system for the entire nation works in accordance with USGA guidelines.

You will need a Real Audio player to listen, click here to get one free: Album Notes: Night People was of course inspired by the legendary Sidney Bechet/Muggsy/Spanier Big Four sessions of 1940. Alex and Archie are joined by Fred Hunt at his most tasteful (substituting piano for Carmen Mastren's guitar on the originals) and the ubiquitous Jack Fallow on bass who appeared by popular request on so many of the ad hoc Lansdowne studio sessions. Alex was attack, especially in his ensemble playing. But this was never meant to be a recreation, and there are few other common features with the 1940 session. Alex evinced other influences than Spanier. Like every other trumpet player he owed much to Louis, as is pretty apparent in the coda to Premier Bal . And I believe I can even hear influences of Berigan and James in the slower numbers like
