ALGEBRA OG ALGEBRAISK GEOMETRI
Med bakgrunn i studieprogrammet Matematikk, informatikk og teknologi (bachelor), studieretning Matematikk , er du klar for studieprogrammet Matematikk (master - to år) . I dette studiet får du muligheten til å fordype deg i en av matematikkens retninger. På denne siden skal vi presentere retningen Algebra og Algebraisk Geometri, som også er en av forskningsgruppene ved Matematisk institutt i Oslo. Med algebra forstår vi vanligvis den del av matematikken som omhandler studiet av tall (additiv og algebraisk tallteori), grupper, ringer og kropper, kombinatorikk, homologisk algebra. Ordet algebra kommer fra det arabiske aldjabr, som betegnet enkle operasjoner som ble brukt for å løse ligninger.
Algebraisk geometri er studiet av nullpunktsmengder til gitte polynomer - det enkleste eksemplet er plane kurver, dvs. nullpunktsmengden - eller grafen - til et polynom f(x,y). Slike nullpunktsmengder kalles varieteter, og de kan gis en struktur analogt til komplekse mangfoldigheter. Spesielt kan de oppfattes som geometriske (og topologiske) objekter - og det er samspillet mellom den algebraiske strukturen, gitt ved ligningene som definerer varieteten, og den geometriske strukturen (der også differensial-geometriske metoder kommer inn) som gjør algebraisk geometri spennende.
Algebra-gruppen består av 6 faste ansatte/mulige veiledere (presenteres nedenfor), 2 postdoktorer, 9 doktorgradsstudenter og 7 hovedfagsstudenter. Gruppens medlemmer er aktive forskere som har et utbredt samarbeid med utenlandske matematikere - dels ved at gruppens medlemmer deltar på internasjonale konferanser eller besøker utenlandske universiteter, dels ved at utlendinger inviteres til Matematisk institutt.
