Additional information Abstract: In this paper we consider the Eisenstein series for the Hilbert modular group of a general number field. We compute the Fourier expansion at each cusp explicitly. The Fourier coefficients are given in terms of completed partial Hecke -series, and from their functional equations, we get the functional equation for the Eisenstein vector. That is, we identify the scattering matrix. When we compute the determinant of the scattering matrix in the principal case, the Dedekind -function of the Hilbert class field shows up. A proof in the imaginary quadratic case was given in Efrat and Sarnak, and for totally real fields with class number one a proof was given in Efrat.

This Week in History Atle Selberg Atle Selberg in the news Atle Selberg (born June 17 ) is a Norwegian mathematician, one of the greatest analytic number theorist s of all time. Selberg was born in Langesund, Norway . While he was still at school he was influenced by the work of Srinivasa Aaiyangar Ramanujan . During the second world war he worked in isolation due to the occupation of Norway by the Nazi s. After the war his accomplishments in the theory of the Riemann zeta function became known. The celebrated Riemann hypothesis states that all zeros of the complex Riemann zeta function (except the "trivial" zeros at the negative even integer s) lie on the line 1/2 + it t real . This has never been proved. However, G. H. Hardy proved that an infinite number of zeros do exist on this line. Selberg proved that a positive proportion lie on this line. This is a famous theorem He established the importance of Viggo Brun's sieve methods in number theory, inventing a method that now bears his name, as well as workng on the large sieve. Selberg came to the United States and settled at the Institute for Advanced Study in the where he remains today. During the 1950s he developed the Selberg trace formula, his most famous accomplishment. It establishes a duality between the length spectrum of a

Search MAA Online MAA Home Reminiscences of Paul Erdös (1913-1996) Melvin Henriksen I am not qualified to write a biography of Erdös, but some background seems necessary. There is an excellently written and accurate obituary of him by Gina Kolata in the Sept. 21, 1996 issue of the New York Times, beginning on page 1. An interview conducted in 1979 which reveals much of his personality appeared in the volume Mathematical People edited by D.J. Albers and G.L. Alexanderson (Birkhauser 1985). The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) sells two videos of Erdös, and Ronald Graham, a long time collaborator, has edited together with Jarik Nesetril two volumes on his mathematical work and life. (Both volumes have been published by Springer-Verlag and were available in January 1997. They include a detailed biographical article by Bella Bollobas.) Erdös was born in Budapest in 1913 of parents who were Jewish intellectuals. His brilliance was evident by the time he was three years old. For this reason, and perhaps because two older sisters died of scarlet fever shortly before he was born, his parents shielded him almost completely from the everyday problems of life. For example, he never had to tie his own shoelaces until he was 14 years old, and never buttered his own toast until he was 21 years old in Cambridge, England. In return for the freedom to concentrate almost exclusively on intellectual pursuits, he paid the price of not learning the social skills that are expected of all of us and usually acquired in childhood.
