Dear Mr. Kotera Hiroshi and Members of HM.
Some historians of mathematics translate "Sangaku" as "Temple
Geometry". However "Sangaku" is a sort of votive picture for Shinto
shrine. Buddhist temples have no votive picture in ancient India,
China, or Japan. From Middle Ages, some Buddhist temples had
the custom of "Sangaku"; however the oldest "Sangaku" is in the
Hoshinomiya Jinja (shrine), Gumma prefecture. The most famous
"Sangaku" is in the Yasaka Jinaja in Kyoto, not in the Buddhist temple.
(Please see the "Minkangaku Jiten" (The Encyclopedia for Folks)
Kano Masanao, Tsurumi Shunsuke and Nakayama Shigeru (eds.). 1997.5.30. Tokyo: Sanseido. In Japanese) Therefore I suggest that the "Sangaku" must be translated as the "Mathematical Votive Pictures". (Please see my web page at:

I heard many moons ago on Dr. Karl's radio show on jjj that the japanese discovered the calculus independently of netwon and leibniz. Does anyone know more about this? if so please email me at alienpigfarmer@hotmail.com

Possibly some reference to Seki...
Takakazu Seki Kowa

Seki was an infant prodigy in mathematics. He was self-educated in mathematics having been introduced to the topic by a servant in the household who, when Seki was nine years old, realised the talent of the young boy.
Seki soon built up a library of Japanese and Chinese books on mathematics and became acknowledged as an expert. He was known as 'The Arithmetical Sage', a term which is carved on his tombstone, and soon had many pupils....
...Secrecy surrounded the schools in Japan so it is hard to determine the contributions made by Seki, but he is also credited with major discoveries in the calculus which he passed on to his pupils.
There is also this single statement from the Japan Economic Foundation Some Japanese historians advocated that the infinitesimal calculus was invented by Seki, Takebe and a few others in the form of Enri, but this claim was an exaggeration and has now been abandoned.

Mathematics Somewhere I saw the quotation " Mathematics has something that attracts people. " I'm afraid of wrong remembrance, so I will sometime retrieve the source. As the attracted one, I will introduce some topics. Possible policies are 1) little prior knowledge, 2) not too wide gap between the lines, 3) inserting concrete samples, 4) handing over something attractive. But in truth these are difficult. Among a lot of mathematical web sites, I managed to arrive in the following ones. The MacTutor History of Mathematics archive More than 70 history topics, more than 60 famous curves, more than 1000 biographies, including 19 Japanese, Yasuaki Aida, Naonobu(Chokuyen) Ajima, Heisuke Hironaka, Taira Honda, Kiyosi Ito, Kenkichi Iwasawa, Skokichi Iyanaga, Shizuo Kakutani, Kunihiko Kodaira, Hitoshi Kumano-Go, Yozo Matsushima, Shigefumi Mori, Kiyoshi Oka, Shigeo Sasaki, Takakazu(Kowa) Seki, Kenjiro Shoda, Zyoiti Suetuna, Teiji Takagi, Yutaka Taniyama. Subject: [HM] the 3rd ICOA Author: jochi@ccms.nkfu.edu.tw Date: Tue, 07 Jul 1998 16:36:52 +0800 (TST) Dear members of [HM] I would like to introduce the international conference of The Third International Conference on Oriental Astronomy (the 3rd ICOA) in Fukuoka, Japan. The traditional Japanese mathematics was very close to the astronomy, such as Seki Takakazu (Kowa) studied the "Shoushi-li" calender (Works and Days Calendar); then he wrote "Juji Hatsumei" (Comments of the Works and Days Calendar) in 1680, and "Jujireki-kyo Rissei no Ho" (Methods of Manual and Tables of the Works and Days Calendar) in 1681. That is to say, Japanese mathematics and astronomy was one subject in that time. The web page at http://www.fukuoka-edu.ac.jp/meeting/ICOA.html http://www.nkfu.edu.tw/~jochi/ The Math Forum

Unifying Theme The theme for this unit is to engage students in using the Internet to do research about significant individuals from around the world. The unit is designed to challenge students to explore different cultures by reading biographies that are linked to the Internet. The Internet creates an interactive, dynamic research tool for students to use. This unit plan will integrate science, mathematics, humanities and history.
Objectives of this Unit At the end of this unit students will be able to: 1. Access the Internet for information about a culture in specific subject areas.
2. Synthesize information gathered from the Internet about a particular culture, then
as a group design a creative presentation.
3. Explore a particular culture in a specific subject area, then write an individual report. 4. Demonstrate what they have learned about a culture and teach the rest of the class through group presentation.
