Karl Schwarzschild
Karl Schwarzschild October 9 May 11 ) was a noted German physicist and astronomer. He was born in Frankfurt am Main. Something of a child prodigy he had a paper on orbit s published when he was only sixteen. He studied at Strasbourg and Munich , obtaining his doctorate in for a work on Jules Henri Poincar©'s theories. From 1897 on he worked as assistant at the Kufner Sternwarte in Vienna, where he developed a formula to calculate the properties of photographic material involving an exponent now know as the Schwarzschild-exponent (p in formula below). From until he was a professor at the prestigious institute at G¶ttingen , where he had the opportunity to work with some significant figures including David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski . He moved to a post at the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam in . At the outbreak of war in he joined the German army serving on both the western and eastern fronts, rising to the rank of lieutenant in the artillery. While serving in Russia in , he wrote two main papers, one on relativity theory and one on quantum theory. His work on relativity produced the first exact solutions to the general gravitational equations - one for non-rotating spherically symmetric bodies and one for static isotropic empty space surrounding any massive body. From the second he undertook some pioneering work on classical

KARL SCHWARZSCHILD

Schwarzschild, Karl
(from Encyclopedia Brittanica on-line)
(b. Oct. 9, 1873, Frankfurt am Main, Ger.d. May 11, 1916, Potsdam), German astronomer whose contributions, both practical and theoretical, were of primary importance in the development of 20th-century astronomy.
Schwarzschild's exceptional ability in science became evident at the age of 16, when his paper on the theory of celestial orbits was published. In 1901 he became professor and director of the observatory at the University of Göttingen, and eight years later he was appointed director of the Astrophysical Observatory at Potsdam.
While at Göttingen, Schwarzschild introduced precise methods in photographic photometry. The results of his studies clearly demonstrated the relationship between the spectral type and colour of a star. He pioneered in the use of a coarse grating (for example, a glass plate with closely spaced parallel lines etched into it) in the course of measurement of the separation of double stars; the technique has found widespread use in determining stellar magnitude and colour. He also developed certain basic methods for the analysis of solar spectra obtained during eclipses.

Schwarzschild metric
Karl Schwarzschild, 1916, Sitzber.Deut. Akad. Wiss, p.189
In the theory of gravity, general relativity , the Schwarzschild metric is a static spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's field equations of the vacuum (empty space). It defines the gravitational field outside a point mass or outside a spherical non-rotating mass. It was found by Karl Schwarzschild in 1916, only a few month after the publication of the Einstein field equations. It was the first exact solution of these equations. Schwarzschild's solution showed how the predictions of general relativity for the gravitational field of the Sun and stars (for example) would deviate from the predictions obtained with Newtonian gravity. Using his solution, three classical tests of general relativity have been predicted, which for about half a century were the only experimental verification of general relativity. They are the gravitational redshift , the gravitational deflection of light and the perihelium shift of the planet Mercury. The Schwarzschild solution defines a characteristic radius associated with every mass, called the
