The Schur multiplier
It is now 100 years since Issai Schur introduced multipliers in order to study projective representations of groups (I. Schur: 'Uber die Darstellung der endlichen Gruppen durch gebrochene lineare Substitutionen', J. reine angew. Math. 127 (1904), 20-50).
To celebrate this, we look at some of the (equivalent) descriptions we have of the Schur multiplier. We will concentrate on the 'covering group-approach', which has been found useful in getting simple proofs of results on the multiplier.
In particular, we will look at covering groups of direct products, which lead to nilpotent products, an interesting construction... [ back to contents

Analisi combinatoria, teoria della rappresentazione, teoria degli invarianti: un "ménage à trois"
Ottavio Mario D'Antona , Gian Carlo Rota This paper is a learned and pleasant conversation on the state of researeh in these three branches of mathematics. The authors talk about amusing anecdotes of Cambridge in the 1950's before turning to the character Alfred Young. Then there is a disquisition on the two types of exinsting mathematicians: the problem solvers and the theoricians. The former only find interest in the resolution of a problem, while the latter generate a theory which ends by making the original problem trivial. Hermann Grassmann and the external algebra are then mentioned. The article finishes with an interesting consideration on the fundamental question: when two mathematicians meet and check their reciprocal mathematical knowledge, what really matters to them is the understanding of the basic problem of the other. 1.1 Introduzione

On consecutive quadratic non-residues: a conjecture of Issai Schur
Authors: Patrick Hummel
Subj-class: Number Theory
MSC-class:
Issai Schur once asked if it was possible to determine a bound, preferably using elementary methods, such that for all prime numbers p greater than the bound, the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p is always less than the square root of p. This paper uses elementary methods to prove that 13 is the only prime number for which the greatest number of consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo p exceeds the square root of p.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:

Stanford Report, February 13, 2002 Memorial Resolution: Menahem Max Schiffer
Menahem Max Schiffer, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, died on November 11, 1997 at the age of 86. He became a Professor of Mathematics on September 1, 1952 after first visiting the department, joining Stanford's Applied Mathematics and Statistics Lab, and having held earlier positions at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Harvard, and Princeton. He served as the Executive Head of the Mathematics Department from 1954 1959. In 1967 he was appointed to the Robert Grimmett Professorship of Mathematics, becoming the first member of the department to be awarded an endowed chair; he held that position until his retirement in 1977. In 1968 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1970 to the National Academy of Sciences. Schiffer married Fanya Rabinivics in 1937 in Jerusalem. She died in 1998. They are survived by their daughter Dinah Singer, Chief of the Molecular Regulation Section of the Experimental Immunology Branch at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.
Never losing his interest in mathematical physics, Schiffer also made important contributions to the study of eigenvalue problems, to partial differential equations, and to the variational theory of 'domain functionals' that arise in many classical boundary value problems. And he co-authored a book on General Relativity.

You will find this book fascinating if you are a computer science student intrigued by symbolic calculation systems such as Mathematica and Maple, and if you would like to see how such systems would be implemented in C++ (Mathematica and Maple are actually implemented in plain old C). The C++ level required is just after CS2, the second C++ class that comprises data structures. If I were a CS2 instructor, I guess I would require students to read some parts of this book since it is a great mea...

Ferdinand Georg Frobenius
Weierstrass and Fuchs list 15 topics on which Frobenius had made major contributions during these years: the development of analytic functions in series, the algebraic solution of equations whose coefficients are rational functions of one variable, the theory of linear differential equations, Pfaff's problem, linear forms with integer coefficients, linear substitutions and bilinear forms, adjoint linear differential operators, the theory of elliptic and Jacobi functions, the relations among the 28 double tangents to a plane of degree 4, Sylow's theorem, double cosets arising from two finite groups, Jacobi's covariants, Jacobi functions in three variables, the theory of biquadratic forms, and the theory of surfaces with a differential parameter. In his work in group theory, Frobenius combined results from the theory of algebraic equations, geometry, and number theory, which led him to the study of abstract groups. He published a paper in 1879, which looks at permutable elements in groups. This paper also gives a proof of the structure theorem for finitely generated abelian groups. In 1884, he published his next paper on finite groups in which he proved Sylow's theorems for abstract groups . The proof which Frobenius gives is the one still used today in most undergraduate courses. Then Frobenius filled the chair at the University of Berlin that became vacant when Kronecker died. He did great work there, but he did not get along with his colleagues. He was known for giving fast-paced, varied, and deep lectures that were not terribly stimulating.
