Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page I was a good student in all subjects, loved mathematics and physics, but also the strict logic of the ancient grammars, hated only memorising incidental dates and facts. Of the German poets, I loved especially the dramatists, but hated the pedantic dissection of this works. Mertens , function theory, differential equations and mathematical statistics by Wilhelm Wirtinger (who he found uninspiring as a lecturer). He also studied projective geometry, algebraic curves and continuous groups in lectures by Gustav Kohn. On the conduction of electricity on the surface of insulators in moist air. After this he undertook voluntary military service in the fortress artillery. Then he was appointed to an assistantship at Vienna but, rather surprisingly, in experimental physics rather than theoretical physics. He later said that his experiences conducting experiments proved an invaluable asset to his theoretical work since it gave him a practical philosophical framework in which to set his theoretical ideas. Having completed the work for his habilitation, he was awarded the degree on 1 September 1914. That it was not an outstanding piece of work is shown by the fact that the committee was not unanimous in recommending him for the degree. As Moore writes in [7]:-

About the ESI
The International
ESI was founded with the aim of providing a meeting place for leading experts in Mathematical Physics and Mathematics in the international scientific community, nurturing the development and exchange of ideas not only in the international arena, but also in Austria through its affiliations with Austrian universities.
Through its geographical location in the heart of Europe the Institute aims particularly to stimulate intellectual exchange between scientists from Eastern Europe and the rest of the world.
To date 2481 scientists have visited the Institute, contributing 1487 preprints. The total number of scientific programs organized up to now is 53.
ESI is program- and invitation-oriented. Its visiting positions are normally not open for direct application. ESI welcomes applications for programs: see the Guidelines for submission and organization of programs at ESI
The scientific policy and selection of research programmes of the Institute is based upon the recommendations of its International Advisory Committee, comprising six foreign and two Austrian scientists, as well as the President, Director and Deputy Director of the Institute. The current composition of the committee is as follows:

Erwin Schrödinger auf der ehemaligen österreichischen 1000-Schilling-Banknote Sein Vater, Rudolf Schrödinger, war Wachstuchfabrikant und Botaniker, seine Mutter, Georgine Emilia Brenda, war Professorin für Chemische Technologie an der k.u.k. Technische Hochschule Wien. 1887 in Wien geboren, studierte Schrödinger Mathematik und Physik und habilitierte sich am Wiener Physikalischen Institut. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg folgte er Berufungen nach Jena Stuttgart Breslau und Zürich . Er belegte dort den Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Physik, den vor ihm bereits Albert Einstein und Max von Laue inne hatten. Hier legte er auch den Grundstein für seine Wellenmechanik . Nach der Quantentheorie Max Plancks und der Relativitätstheorie Albert Einsteins bildete diese den dritten Grundpfeiler der modernen Physik. ging Schrödinger nach Berlin , wo er die Nachfolge von Max Planck antrat und ein wissenschaftliches Umfeld vorfand, das idealer nicht sein konnte.
